Well, Majorsk was kind of a russian weak spot (or at least an important position), which the ukrainians used to attack previously. Even if the russians don´t try to advance very much, it would make sense for them to expand their zone of controll a bit and create a buffer there. If they managed to capture all the ground up to the canal there, they would have gained a position that is much easier to defend and the roads on the russian side would be far safer for them to use. Of cause, it should work as a diversion as well and as with all the multiple diversions everywhere, if Ukraine fails to react appropriately, it might become a bigger and bigger push. And maybe the mulitple diversions everywhere already diverted Ukraine away from that particular frontline to a sufficient extent, that the previously unpenetrable ukrainian position became another ukrainian weak spot.

Feels like Russia lost a lot of momentum, but still holds the initiative. And feels like Putin is more busy power projecting outside! This feels like a bad omen to me.
He is looking towards the future and the changing geopolitical environment. The conflict in Ukraine is just a stepping stone.
Sometimes its not possible to bring pows to the rear , like what the Germans did to American troops in the battle of the bugle.
Operation Crusader - Surrendered Axis commandeered a truck to follow the British who had no infantry to take them to the rear. In another case surrendered troops simply went back to their lines instead.
Traditionally snipers are not taken prisoner. Drone operators would get similar treatment in this war
