      The problem still remains: if we didn't have the Ukraine war, Russia would still be in the calendar and we'll be fighting (ok, not we, but the organizers) to see which track loses F1. And it's going to keep happening. NY mayor already said they want a NY GP, many old circuits like Monaco or Hockenheim were very vocal about the insane costs FIA and Liberty asks them to hold F1 races, and those costs exist solely because oil-backed countries in the Middle East pushed millions down Liberty's throat for 10 year long contracts, so if you want to be in the calendar, you need to pay. In the other hand, Liberty put money out of their pocket to organize Miami and Vegas GP, which bring more American fans yes yes, but I'm not sure they bring the "right" kind of fans.
      I want to see Sepang, Hockenheim, Turkey again in F1, but sincerely I understand them, screw Liberty Media.

    as a local in Las Vegas, I think it's safe to say that we dont have huge impact mentally on what happens at the strip due to events. cuz we never go on the strip. its such a huge tourist place that we stay away from. so having an F1 race at the strip is a great idea because that's where our economy comes from. and we're also used to the crazy events that happened there.

    • @JustinJondle
      @JustinJondle Před rokem +17

      I'm not a local, but even I know this. There are ways for tourists and employees to get around on the strip without driving and locals don't go to the strip. I think Nolan's take on the casino's stance is also completely opposite of reality. Casinos will welcome the influx of guests and the premiums strip facing rooms will command that weekend. Also, very few casinos' parking is on the strip side so they aren't going to care about the driveways being blocked. Vegas is uniquely suited to host thousands of people in a very condensed space, the airport is very close to the strip, and flights are generally on the less expensive side.

      I think the issue is with every resident and business that lays inside the track, no just the strip. I have never had the pleasure of going to Las Vegas, nor do I know where the touristy areas start/stop. But I think we can say with almost 100% certainty that there will be an impact on locals due to the road closures, especially given the size of the track. I honestly thought the main issue with this video is the pretense that the Las Vegas GP HAS to replace another GP, there are currently 22 (including the loss of the Russian GP) races I believe, with a cap of 25 races, so they very well could just add another. Liberty Media would also obviously increase the budget cap to accommodate for the additional track I feel

    • @JustinJondle
      @JustinJondle Před rokem +3

      @@chriscringe7506 The only thing in the infield are the casinos from Planet Hollywood to The Plazzo. Your comment made me realize I didn't *really* know where the track was going so I looked it up. From Harmon Ave to Sands Ave and Las Vegas Blvd to Koval Ln. and Las Vegas Blvd. already has walking overpasses. I don't think it is possible to have a less impacted city for a street course. So it is more likely 100% certain that it will not impact locals, except hotel employees, as the local in this thread stated. I stand by my statement that Las Vegas is uniquely suited to host a race (or any event attracting tens of thousands of people). Making an exciting race out of the grid layout streets is a valid argument though. Your point about the video's main focus being the replacement of another race is also very valid; they would obviously increase the budget cap to accommodate an additional race.

    Las Vegas Blvd (the Strip) may be the most known road, but it is not the “main” road. Locals would rather take any other street than LVB. Even locals working at the Strip casinos don’t use it because the employee access points are off of smaller roads behind the properties. Those access roads will have to be used by locals and tourists during the event, so that could be a little added headache. But it’s the hosting casinos looking for the revenue being brought by tourists who are making that decision to limit tourist access to the boulevard.
    The strip gets shut down for special events increasingly regularly for things like New Year’s Eve and marathons. This could be the biggest endeavor the city has put on due to the set up/tear down time, but it won’t feel out of the ordinary.

    I am a race fan and I live in Las Vegas. I must say I was pretty excited about the idea of a street race here. Early commenters are absolutely right in saying we don't drive on the strip if we can help it. However, you mentioned residents getting to see the race. Oh yeah, I wanted to see that race. I thought that even with the dedicated grandstands and the suites with a view there would still be some sort of general admission for residents, or a spot you could get to and see part of the race. You know, someplace that wouldn't cost as much as my yearly income (retired). So far - no such thing. As a resident, this is for the tourists, and I'll have to watch on TV. So that might actually cause some unhappiness among residents, but we're also pretty used to it. I do wonder where they're going to corral the few thousand homeless who sleep in that area. Probably don't want to know.

When the strip gets shut down for events the city always has backup routes in place and casinos provide shuttles for those employees to be able to make it to and from work. Also the race gives everyone a chance to experience something new and interesting on the strip. Yes, the overall road blockages hamper people who work at the casinos, but there's several events throughout the year that force the Strip to be closed down. Several construction projects have been put in place to accommodate the traffic, but it also means huge economic opportunities for the Vegas economy. Knowing November weather, there shouldn't be any heat issues at all for a night race. Most locals drive perpendicular through the Strip to go East or West of the city, but there's other options available. My main concern is how boring of a track it'd be.

    There's another side to this as well that is rarely talked about and that is the survival of purpose built circuits.
    I'm from the UK and it is no secret that Silverstone, our most well known track and the host of the first ever F1 race, struggles financially. I have visited regularly throughout my life time, and even in the heydays of GT1, the crowd was nowhere near the size that it is for the F1 GP. Most other events have a fraction of the amount of spectators that F1 brings and even the next biggest events have significantly less fans in attendance.
    Then there's the cost of maintaining and updating an FIA grade 1 circuit.
    The revenue F1 generates is vital for these circuits survival and frankly it is lucky that the UK has such a strong motorsports community which brings such variety it is capable of generating consistent events nationwide which just isn't possible in some other countries, and still some circuits don't survive. RIP Rockingham 😞

    It's cool to see that in 2023 none of these concerns are a big deal or have been solved. Also no local ever uses the most touristy spots and streets in their day-to-day.

      @@sherlockmaverick what do you think you’re accomplishing with this comment? Everyone knows that the a black road will get hotter than ambient temperature, that doesn’t mean 75F is “unbearable” for F1, they do races all the time in weather like that.
