    Thank you Anthony! You explained the pin numbers and what they do better than any other video I have watched. Very well done!

    You are truly in the realm of “Rocket Scientist”. I don’t recall my 3rd grade science demonstration using such amateur language. Apparently “cross the bridge” = closing a N.O. contact.

    Stupid question but is pin 86 and 85 common terminals for power and ground or will they be different on different relays 86 power or 85 ground or reverse or different number ?

  • @lexsoft3969
    @lexsoft3969 Před 6 lety

    The relay you show is an SPST (single pole single throw). When diagnosing an SPDT (single pole double throw) that has 5 terminals : 85, 86, 30, 87 are as usual, and 87a for NC (normally close), I guess the steps are quite similar, right ?
    When activating an SPDT relay, I expect we will hear the sound going from NC contact to NO contact.
    Btw, can we use a Test Light instead of multimeter for inspecting continuity/connectivity on those contact terminals ?

    The headlight relay in my Yamaha xs1100 is out (I think) attaching a new one: power wire to 86, ground wire (black) to 85 doesn’t activate the relay. Attaching the blue wire to 85 while power is attached to 86 does though. I’m so confused. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Hi Anthony….
    What causes a relay to heat up and and not work. I have a fuel pump relay on my merceds benz 1998 ml320 and its always been a problem. They last but only for a short time before i have to replace it again. I replaced the fuel pump and would like to know if you can help? thx

    • @DIYautotech
      @DIYautotech  Před 8 lety

      +Henry Cagle A video on that will be coming shortly. However in a nut shell if it's getting hot then too much current is trying to flow through the circuit. Pull the relay and volt/amp test pins 86 and 30 and see what the reading is. Hopefully will have my amperage and voltage draw videos up soon for you to review.

  • @altonrowell8137
    @altonrowell8137 Před 3 lety

    I can see how that proves it works ,but it doesn't prove how good it will conduct current across the bridge. I have seen relays click but they failed to deliver current to the load. A ohms meater only shows contanuaty.
    I would like to see u use a 20 to 30 amp load. Most automotive relays are rated at 10 20 30 amps.

  • @mackenleymontfleury3559

    can you show how to test without a battery

    • @DIYautotech
      @DIYautotech  Před 7 lety +1

      In short, you have to have voltage available to test a relay.
      In order to assure source voltage is applied and grounded through pins 30-87, you need to have reference voltage and ground for pins 85-86. Without these 4 aspects available, you will not have the relay ground (and thus, you cannot test if it works or not).
      I hope this is not too confusing, but if it is, please watch the rest of my electrical diagnostic videos.
      Or, rewatch this video a few times to get the idea.
      You can always try to use a smaller 9V battery to perform this test as well.
      Thanks for watching,
      Anthony Sardegna, DIYautotech
