    Hi Hyce, what a nice surprise coming across this video! About the black smoke and the steam generation, one thing is that it's important to adjust the damper (the little rotating handle on the side of the firebox door cover) so that it's about the same percentage open as the firing handle, in order to balance the fuel-air mixture. The other thing is to keep the flues clear of soot by clicking and holding on the sand bucket. The soot builds up when there's black smoke, but it'll clear if you sand for long enough. While the sand is scouring the flues, you'll get even more black smoke (that's the soot beign thrown out the stack!). You should also use the sludge removers frequently so as to avoid foaming (yeah, the other kind of foaming. lol!)

    • @Hyce777

    A solid Green over Red is DIVERGING CLEAR. aka Proceed through the diverging route at Prescribed Speed. Ignore the Red on the top, it's just there to tell Operator that it's working.
    However if you DO see a Yellow on the top of that Green signal, it means the NEXT signal is a speed change. Green flashing under Yellow is 40, Green solid is 60 unless a Permanent Speed Restriction sign is present at that signal.

    844, to me at least, never quite looked like it was built in 1944. It looks newer than that, not only in its quality of materials but also in its general design. When I first went to work for Lakeside on the railroad, I worked for the two guys that were burned in the cab of the real thing when it was in Union Station. The fire had gone out and the fireman tossed a fusee in to relight the fire and it flashed back into the cab. Since then, no visits to the cab in the depots. John was my boss for a season and then I guess he was too sick to do much other than answer phones. He died not too much later. Jerry drove a car with a bumper sticker with "Paid for Union Pacific 8444." (She was still 8444 back then.) Jerry ended up taking over the vendor of the arcade games. He kept putting super loud and annoying games in the depot and I'd always have the ticket agent press the breaker to turn them off so we could have some peace and quiet. Once in a while he'd come in and get pissed we turned his games off. No one ever played them. Eventually he moved in different games and put them on the concrete where they got good and wet when it rained. I used to chase the Challenger and the 844 back then. I almost went with some coworkers to chase the 844 over Tennessee Pass but I ended up working at Lakeside that weekend because, heck, why chase steam when you can be paid to ride.

      @@Dustinthemaroon9Flocomotive No theres plenty of steam engines running today in America, heritage steam is alive and well today, bigger than its ever been.

      Yeah put it's different because heritage railways are like retirement for steam locomotive I mean yeah they pull coaches but they don't pull cars also what I meant by the locomotive is the only one running is because in was never retired it's just pulling what flying Scotsman does

    • @Full_Otto_Bismarck
      @Full_Otto_Bismarck Před 2 lety +1

      @@Dustinthemaroon9Flocomotive Im really not following what you're trying to say/ask. I really dont know what Flying Scotsman does, I'm an American and have a casual interest in American steam railroading, so that doesnt help me much. Beautiful locomotive though.
      As far as I know Union Pacific has used the 844 to haul revenue freight cars but the latest i am aware of it doing so was in the 1980s. I want to say they've recently done it with Big Boy 4014, pulling freight that is, but my memory isn't that great.
      However its a rare occurrence for Union Pacific to use their surviving steam locomotives for revenue freight. They are used almost entirely for excursion passenger runs. Which do make some money but thats just for maintaining the steam program not really generating profits like when hauling freight. In the case of the UP steam program its not a seperate heritage railroad but a heritage program within the Union Pacific proper so it runs on modern track and as mentioned before occasionally UP will haul revenue generating freight with its steam locomotives and is probably to only one in the United States that has done so in decades but its very rare.
