How to Adjust RPM on a Lawnboy

    Today we'll be adjusting the RPM on a 2 stroke Lawnboy.
    Model: CC21CPN
    I've already cleaned and rebuilt this carburetor, made my air/fuel mixture screw adjustment, and now I'm showing you how to increase the RPM.
    Most people don't know that you can simply click the grooved cog underneath the air vane in a clockwise rotation to increase spring tension.
    This will in turn increase engine RPM!
    However, you should follow the steps in this video to ensure that your throttle cable is adjusted properly, as the wrong adjustment can lead to less spring tension, which will result in less RPM.
    So always start with the cable adjustment 1st, then make the spring tension adjustment!

      Any chance you could give us a good picture and or walk around of your mower work on cart? I'm a little older than than I used to be

      I've got a lawn boy gold 2 cycle that I rebuilt the carb on and it runs and mows. I've got it about 1/2 turn out on the adjust screw and it's @ 2200-2500 RPM... not tried going further in yet... but it runs and mows here.
      The spring is attached and the adjustments seem to affect the tension on the governor arm when the mower is not running.
      The mower flat out will not idle. Dies almost instantly if I let out the blade engage arm and wont start without the blade engage arm held in.
      It did not have this problem before I attached the blades. I had it idling before putting the blades back on.
      Possibly something seized that makes it impossible to disengage blades and the extra load stalls it out @ idle?
      Or any other ideas?

    This is a great video as it explains the 21”commercial f series yr 1989 no blade brake required loophole machine .
    This is the best model made . Our lawn boys up here in Canada were made in Peterborough Ont.
    I also run 50:1 amsoil
    Saber or stihl ( Castrol ) hardly any smoke at all .
    Shout out to David Tyrrell lawnboy 5024 “The ultimate mulcher”for helping keep these mowers going ,his GM Oshawa truck assembly skills put to good LB refurbishment use .

    Just fixed RPM issue on customer’s 2-stroke Lawnboy because of this video. I wanted to thank you. Took a while to dial it in to 3100 rpm because it was way out and too low.

      They can be a pain when you go past and have to reset, or if they're way out like you said, but it does feel good once you dial it in within 50rpm. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Jake, I live in Peterborough and I have the same mower which I love. This thing is awesome. Yesterday I changed out the engine mount as the other one was broken and vibration was terrible. I have a skeleton mower same year that I’ve been taking parts from. I had no idea about the adjustments and if I was a bit closer I’d have you become my mechanic as well!! Awesome stuff and thank you for your information because I want to keep this machine as long as I can!

    I bought a C21CPN at least 20 years ago for $21. The landscaper who owned it said he never could get it to run right. Tried rebuilding the carb but that didn't improve it. Found a newer carb on ebay for $35 and got it running. It would start after a few pulls, took a while to warm up, and produced enough rpm to cut my grass. Last season I decided to clean up the carb and slightly increased the spring tension on the vane. Starts right up. Was very surprised to find I now had a high and low speed mower. High speed seems too high so don't use it. Low speed works fine. Come spring, thanks to your video, I now know how to really tune up the mower. Also really like the fuel filter and new shut off you installed so will be doing that.

    These Lowboys are one of the best lawn mowers man has ever made. They are as good as a Toro Recycler . Too bad they do not make as good as these machines . I have one of these commercial series , and a silver series .

    2:15 you mean the turtle. These are the best mowers, strong and light. Easy to move around. I even took the metal bumper guards off mine to lighten it even more. The zirc grease points on each wheel bolts show the workmanship is impressive. Good info, thanks.

    thank you very much for informative videos, many ways to set the max/low speed i have never seen that set up before, it was actually a good idea to use the wind from flywheel ribs.
    i have saved a lot of money looking on your videos by fixing my own small garden equipment and it is fun to do it myself, it is a good feeling when you understand how things work by doing the repair yourself

    Just did a Lawn-Boy 10323, it turned out to be the spring, it came out of the little hole on the vane so had to take the brass butterfly out, and rebend the end of the spring, and reinstall the spring, and did the proceedure here, and now it runs great, thanks for the video, it had been so long since I did it, I forgot the process.

    Interesting to see that you run a 50:1 mixture in all of your 2cycle equipment.
    I have a number of Lawn Boy 2 strokes and that is what I use, with NO issues.

      Some people give me a hard time about it, but honestly the oil today lubricates much better than back then. So a 32:1 is far too rich in my opinion, you get less power out of the engine, it fouls plugs easier and also gums up the carbs. Like we both agree, 50:1 with no issues for years!

      @@EliminatorPerformance while I'm sure 50:1 works fine too. I have a 1979 7268, weedeater blower and Stihl FS45 I've run all on 32:1 with either Lucas or Amsoil Saber for 10 years and they all run perfectly. The Stihl smokes a little but im ok with that.

      I own alot of 2 strokes,And a chainsaw collection of around 60saws, And I too use 50:1 in everything! But don't forget to tell folks to never run regular gas especially in the summer heat! It will detonate a 2-stroke to death! It will light itself on fire under heat and compression throwing an engine out of time. And if you use pump premium gas make sure to drain the carburetor or start the engine and let it run out of gas because if you leave the diaphragm in the carburetor submerged in that fuel it will turn the diaphragm into a ritz cracker from the Benzene in pump fuel. And left inside the carburetor for long periods of time it will eat the medal because the alcohol is crossive to aluminum. I have been running the VP 2-stroke premixed 50:1 And have nothing but great things to say about that fuel! And will store up to two years without any kind of problems! Very stable unlike pump fuel with the alcohol mix which draws moisture more than most people would ever believe! I hear it time and time again on Craigslist when guys pull out the lawnmower after sitting around all winter, Tank half full of the gas they left in it last time they used it six months ago. ( I don't know what's wrong with it? It ran just fine the last time I used it, But I can't get it to fire up now!) And I live in Portland Oregon where it gets pretty wet in the winter months! Hell i have a snapper lawnmower with a Robin's Subaru engine that if it rains very hard at all, You can guarantee that if you want it to start next time you want to mow with it that you must open the drain screw on the bottom of the float bowl of the carburetor and let the water run out for a few seconds before your gonna get it to even think of firing up! Nobody raps there head around the fact that water is heavier than petroleum! So where does the main jet suck up the fuel in the float bowl? At the bottom of the bowl which is now completely full of water that don't burn worth a shit the last time I checked!🤣 So you must remove the float bowl and dump the water out and drain off a little amount of water that has also ended up at the bottom of the gas tank as well being heavier than petroleum again in the gas tank! And American men have become so lazy and refuse to take five minutes to watch a video on CZcams! My favorite one to tell them when they come running to me when they find out how much the local lawnmower shops are charging to fix the damn thing is, ( There is no excuse to say, I don't know anything about making a motor run! Which I reply, First of all! A motor is electric, And an engine is a fuel burning machine! And I don't buy that crap that I don't know how! Hell I could almost do heart surgery on you by watching a short video on how to get-er-done! So don't tell me you can't! Or, I don't know how! The information on how to do damn near anything is right at your fingertips!You need only to apply yourself enstead of watching football all day and learning about stuff that won't help you at all in life! Just ask a woman if she really cares what jaermanes stats are for the season, Or if she finds a man that can fix anything around the house down right sexy and well worth keeping around with mad skills so she's not spending a crapload of money every time something stops working around the house! And bragging to family and friends about all the things you can do! Believe me when I say you're not going anywhere soon when you're good at fixing stuff! But sit on that sofa all weekend yelling at the TV while you're ass gets fatter and the lawn gets taller and taller because you don't know how to make the damn lawnmower run! Or anything else that you don't know how to make work and see what she has to say about your skills in fixing stuff there MacGyver!😋

    Don't be afraid to turn the governor up a little above 3200, they cut better and the exhaust ports are less prone to clogging with some more revs :)

    I bought a used, non running (pretty sure it's a bad coil) around 1979 2 cycle Lawnboy self propelled mower, not a commercial model but does have the magnesium deck, and this one has a plastic carb. I took the mower mostly apart a few years ago and never got around to putting it back together but I want to this spring. I'm going to order a carb rebuild kit and a coil but I wanted to ask you if you know what the compression should be on these engines because if it needs new rings and honed I'd like to do that before putting it back together.

    I'm also a small engine mechanic in Kentucky and just wanted to tell you about a awesome 2 cycle gas mix don't know what you use but you stated you use 50:1 mix I was just wanting to tell you about Opti 2 mix it is a one mix meaning you mix it one way but the awesome part is that it cover any 2 cycle motor from 32:1 to 50:1 mix

      We've been using the Kinetix 50:1 premix here in the cans, and they also sell a 40:1 for more commercial use when the equipment runs longer needs a bit more oil. I'll check out the opti 2 mix though

    Great video.
    Please comment on when to use a screen vs. paper gas filter. I was under the impression that paper filters somewhat restricts gas flow and should only be used on engines that have a pump.

      I honestly haven't found a difference, fuel should flow well through the paper one, but will flow through a screen faster yes. As long as there's enough fuel in the bowl to close the float, it shouldn't matter. I've never had any issues, and paper filters are superior to screens, that's forsure. Thanks for watching!

    I have a 10324 that i cleaned the carb but now it won't run slow speed, it just reves up full throttle. What direction do I turn the spring. My gov is white on a 98-700 carb . The adjuster is round with notches. Will appreciate any help!

    I have an 8480 Lawn-Boy, I have been through the carburetor, cleaned it, hoses are good, it runs good, but when I prime it and start it, I have to pump the primer to keep it running until it warms up, then it runs fine. What do I need to change so it continues to run without pumping the primer it on a cold start?

    Great video, love the thorough explanation. I have a duraforce that was running perfectly. Then it died on me, and now the engine gets flooded with fuel when I try to start it. So much that it comes out the muffler. The carburetor has been rebuilt, and I've tried everything else. Any suggestions?

      @@EliminatorPerformance It would run out of gas, let it sit and it would start and run until the fuel bowl would empty, i checked the line and got fuel but the volume was low, blew it out with air and found that semi plugged up filter, LOL!

    hello, congratulations for the video, I wanted to buy one of those mowers used, it has a 2-stroke engine, I've always had 4-stroke engines. I noticed that this mower doesn't have an oil dipstick, why?

      Because the oil is mixed with the fuel! Some of the new engines are called 4mix, and they're essentially 4 stroke engines but instead of having oil in the crankcase, you mix the oil with the gas like a 2 stroke

      After disassembling the blade assembly/etc... I'm convinced this mower (Gold Series) has no idle. The axis the blades mount to appears to be hardmounted to the flywheel. Not only that but the blade engage lever appears to deactivate a friction brake on the flywheel itself... Meaning when it is released it applies a BRAKE to the FLYWHEEL.

    So i'm messing with one of these - metal walbro on an 8157. I wish I'd never taken the spring off the linkage on the air filter box. I'm trying to figure out how I orient the slot on the adjuster/vane in relation to the carb when I'm trying to set the high speed. of course i have to get a new spring since mine is bent and doesn't stay in place. hard to find this info.

      @@EliminatorPerformance I watched that AFTER I removed it. Just gotta figure out where the window on the regulator vane (that the spring seats in) goes relative to the carb - like facing towards the engine or the air box - so I can put it back together right.

    Under the vain...what does the spring attach to? As in under the black adjuster...mine came off and I can not get it to "catch" to adjust it...Thanks!

      Hmm, well I've never had one apart, but I believe there's something it catches on underneath the vain on the inside of the cylinder. What I do know though is that if you go too far, it resets. So you may need to just keep clicking it until it tightens up!

      Thanks for getting back... I took the vain apart just now...seems like the spring attaches to the black adjuster...there's a small hole...when I tried to turn it earlier the spring would just go round and round... I'm learning...just trying not to royally screw it up lol

      The engine is a 2 stroke, meaning it uses mixed gas. Lawnboy is the brand name of the lawnmower!

    I own a SB 12 Snowboy and the ratio is 16 to 1 . I would never consider running it on 50 to 1.

      The oils today lubricate much better than they did back then, so running a leaner mixture not only increases power, but also prevents the fouling of spark plugs and gumming up the carbs as often. I've ran 50:1 on all my 2 strokes since the early 90s and I've never once had an issue.

      How in the hell do you get the damn thing to start with a 16:1ratio? Your the reason for people to condemn 2-stroke engines! Like when people are packed at the river and here comes ol clearance the third! Trolling down the boat docking area with the old evenrude just smoking to beat all hell! The blue cloud lasting no less than 25 to 30 minutes! Everyone's feeling sick as hell since you cruised on by smoking like chitty chitty bang bang! All because you don't know anything about making your engine run way better because you have done a little research and experimenting with fuel and oil ratios and sparkplug heat ranges that can turn ol chitty chitty bang bang into a frickin animal on demand! Most people don't even understand how much power a great running 2-stroke is capable of producing! Just think about how small a chainsaw engine is, And grab yourself a hand saw and try and get through a big Douglas fir timber and wrap your head around the effort it would take you to cut a big round off of the tree! And how fast a good running saw such as my Husqvarna 266xp that came from Yugoslavia where the EPA has not gotten there hands on it and choked the life out of it with all the crap they've dampened it down with trying to save the world from those smokey ol stinky 2-strokes! Not those guys, They ported the shit out of it and if you drill a couple of holes in the front of the exaust pipe which makes it flat kick ass! I don't even have to tell people how bad ass the damn thing is, It speaks for itself! The thing is animal! With instant throttle response and truly incredible how fast it will cut through a big piece of wood! For size to power a fine tuned 2-stroke makes is unmatched by any other fuel burning engine made! So come on and quit being scared you're going to seize the piston and stop robbing yourself of a shit load of power by putting a 16:1 ratio in your 2-stroke! I have a couple of old Montgomery wards Featherlite chainsaws that says 16:1 on the fuel cap, Both of the saws were so full of unburned oil they could no longer run! I think of all the frustration that the men who owned them must have went through trying to get them to run before finally giving up on them! I have cleaned all the 16:1 mess out of them and run 50:1 in both of them and they are fun as hell to cut with being so small and having so much horsepower for such a small chainsaw, Something both of the men who bought them years ago never got to experience drowning them with that excessive amount of oil they were told to run in them! What happens is that the oil keeps building up inside the exaust port and turns from a liquid to a almost charcoal or coal texture from all the heat passing over it and it finally breaks off the edge of the exaust port and gets lodged between the piston and cylinder and when you have a piston going up and down 10000 thousand times a minute scrubbing this hardened piece of carbon into both piston and cylinder it doesn't take long at all before you now own a scored piece of shit with no compression because the rings are stuck in the ring groove on the piston where the aluminum was being stripped off and crushed all around the ring or rings! To much oil in your mix is a death sentence to your chainsaw that's a guarantee!

      I hear a bunch of crybaby like ol Bradley J who would never consider running his piece on anything but 16:1 because thats what they told him to do! Are you gonna be scared all your f@%king life badly? Reach down there and see if you got a pair badly cry baby! And for God sake stop running your piece of shit on 16:1 you home! ☺ Real men do shit like the ol boys that dumped nitromethane in their engines back in the 60ies and blew the shit out of a whole lot of expensive race parts to figure out how to play with such a highly volatile fuel! And look how far and fast they can get a 500 cubic inch engine to produce 11,000 thousand horsepower! These top fuel engines are truly insane! To launch a2100 hundred pound dragster from a dead stop to 100 miles an hour in 8 tenths of a second! Not even a full second and it's already doing 100 miles an hour! And 330 miles an hour in 3 1/2 seconds And the feeling when two 11000 thousand horsepower cars hit the throttle,Oh my God! Incredible! If you have never seen or heard or felt this you must try it out and tell me if you're not a fan after the first pair of cars go down the track I have found nothing that even comes close to it for excitement! Life changing! Your hooked for life😘
