  • a balance shafts timing chain must be replaced just like the main timing chain otherwise you are simply masking the problem and buying a little bit of time

    Good stuff. People always overlook the replacement of the balance shaft chains thinking it's nonessential.

    Thanks for the info. Do you have the torque specs for the tensioner and guides? Also should I replace the camshaft when I do this? My car is at 103k

    my 2010 A4 is at 103,xxx you think I should change the timing chain now? do you think Audi already did timing chain and updated tensioner when they did the warranty work for oil consumption?

    You can spin the balance shaft all day long and it won’t match up doesn’t mean it’s out those only align the first time their set

    I have have a 2011 Audi A4 2.0t. Vehicle had issues where I’d have to give it gas on crank for it to turn over. Then suddenly crank and no turnover at all. Battery works. Mechanic said timing belt is fine but he has no idea what else could be wrong. He said the engine is not getting any compression? Any thoughts? I would be eternally grateful if you could help guide me.

    Its not very well explained on what you have to do to align the chains BEFORE unbolting anything

  • @jamesclayton4378
    @jamesclayton4378 Před 2 lety +2

    Based on what I saw this guy do he did not align the blance shaft correctly. I guarantee you when you go to drive that motor there will be engine vibes. You have to take that relay sprocket OFF and PAINT the teeth. This way you can start with it in time. You do it like he does here you will have no idea if the balance shaft is aligned properly. The dot on the front of the sprocket DOES NOT mean you have it lined up. If you take it down this far just take off the relay shaft sprocket and paint that shit (theres two super small timing marks). The way this guy did this job here is probably why i have a motor thats not balanced and runs weird. The mechanic i took it too said "he checked the time by looking at the sprockets and the chains but if you mess up the time you have to take everything off and unbolt that relay shaft. PLEASE SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT THIS FACT.

      Your wrong, you do not need to remove any gears if you are just changing the chain and guides. The new chain installed on the marks as they should will time the balance shafts. If your mechanic removed any gears he just re-installed them wrong. You do not need to mark anything, marks are already there but some mechanics do highlight the marks (myself included) for easier visual. PS: find a new mechanic.

      Hey James. Can you describe how your car ran with the mistimed balance shaft? I’m thinking mine was done wrong too.
