Love this older version of the Pioneer, those brass liners are a treat. Great that you were able to locate such an early example. Thanks for the informative discussion, sturdy boy.
It's just a cool knife for sure! Thanks John, kind regards, Sturdy Boy 🙏🏻
Very nice! That is so nice that you have that in your collection! Good job!
I found a near mint condition one recently! I just searched it up out of curiosity right now and am definitely impressed by this knife
I'm glad you did the comparison like I suggested because they are very different levels of knife. New ones are okay but not in old ones league
I wonder where these old knives come from. Some old feller bought the farm I expect, and his family sold his pocket knife / knives probably. Anyway, it's nice to see them, and I'm glad you're putting them to good use. Their previous owner would approve I dare say.
I have one, but it's got a bail loop in place of a keyring. The blade is well used, and is worn that has Elinox on it .
I'm glad you finally got an old 93mm Alox SAK to get to see what they are about and why I complain so much about anything SAK that isn't of it's caliber. You won't want to carry other SAK's once you get used to the old Alox stuff. I hope you get your birth year Soldier and a pre mid 80's Electrician. Be careful with the Electrician's, a lot of them are not pre mid 80's that you see for sale. I wish they had made 84mm Alox stuff to level of 93mm stuff but they never did and they just don't measure up. I don't really need scissors on my SAK's because of my SwissCard Lite that is always in my ejector wallet and a smaller scissors on my Manager. 2 layer 93mm Alox are perfect size and feel to me and I don't miss the scissors like that of a Pioneer X. I wouldn't mind having an old Alox Rancher but they never made them in silver and I'm not really a fan of red and that is why all my 93mm stuff are Soldier's or Electrician's and I love how both don't have key rings. I don't like the feel in hand of 93mm stuff with keyrings on them. You will probably run into some old Electrician's but just be careful with the era you buy and not end up with what you may have thought it would be.
Always appreciate your comments brother! Your knowledge of SAKs is fantastic 🤘🏼
That 3:00 AM urge to watch a British guy showcasing the driving force of my bankruptcy.
You said you are looking for a 1991 soldier model, try to get one with the hollow rivet and the sharpened curve on the screwdriver/cap lifter. I believe they factory sharpened the curve until 1992, it was meant for stripping cable but also
works good for striking ferro rods. The hollow rivet was used to make a plum bob to aim there grenade launcher
The old tools are thicker, but I'm not sure how much sturdier they really are.
Steel quality, heat treatment etc. have probably evolved a lot since the 70s-80s...
And in my experience, it's easier to damage these older ones (e.g. dents and scratches during normal use).
I believe the rivets weren't brass but nickel silver even on these old ones. And the middle one is made of steel on many of the OCs (and they just returned to using a steel middle rivet a few years ago).
I believe this should be from between 1975 (Victorinox stamp already, not Elinox) and 1986ish (brass liners). But I'm never sure about dating OC Pioneers.
The brass liners are super smart! Do they add a lot of weight though?
The red and brass look great together on that one!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Cheers!
