Dan Kelly wss the greatest English Speaking hockey announcer of all time, and he got to call the greatest game of all time here... after Bobby Orr's SC winning goal, that is.
CCCP vs CANADA were the best and most exhilarating hockey ever played. I loved watching the Soviets beautiful style of play. They had a great team. (Best ever?) A better team than Canada imo. Team Canada was together for 4 weeks only at that point, a great disadvantage if compared to the Soviets team which had been playing together for years. Team Canada needed that home cooking from the Crowd and the referees to even things out. All fair to me. The difference was the Soviets didn’t know yet about Mario Lemieux. Otherwise they win the tournamen
Your so right. I have had this series burned into my memory ever since. It was one of my top series ever. I liked it as much as the 1975 World Series Classic!!!
Maybe the best Canadian team of all time against the best Soviet team of all time. The big difference you notice is the quality of the goal-tending. Gretzky's records will never be broken.
I believe that Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux started the Canada cup in the diffirent attacking lines. But the famous finnish radio commentator asked in the pree confrence Keenan why your not put on Gretzky and Lemieux in the attacking line.So Gretzky and Lemieux played in the same line.Without that Canada would have been in trouble. Thanks to the finnish radio.Mylnikov and Grant Fuhr were not the best goalies in the world that is why there so many goals
Plain and simply if Tretiak were in this series it would not even had been this close the Soviets were hosed with the officiating too, the soviets were the better team period.
LOL get the fuck out. Grant Fuhr kept Russia alive by not being able to stop a beach ball, Patrick Roy was already coming into his prime at this point, but was unavailable, Tretiak was at the end of his time and had finished by then.
Canada=Hockey, there is no doubt about it. Sure there are other countries who get close, but with the best competing how many times has Canada actually lost? Canada Cup was won by Canada in '76-84-87-91 more then any other country. Canada 70-80% of the time comes out on top with a goal. To me the Canada Cup was and will always be the closest tournament to revealing the true skills. I wish the final would've be more then a best out of 3. Having said this, Russia brought hockey to a new level.
But the Russians pushed the Canadians all the way. I would say the Russians as close second going for being the World Champions of Ice Hockey. Americans third place.
Gretzky should've won it for Canada when he scored from an impossible angle to make it 5-4 with less than 3 minutes to play. Never cared much for Grant Fuhr. He was hardly clutch here at the end. Sorry Great One. 4:05
who else u want in net in 87? Patrick roy he was coming off a good rookie year but he got benched in theplayoffs in 1987 and u want the 1987 patrick roy who got benched in the playoffs for brian hayward?
Anybody notice how many goals Gretzky was on for, I swear that guy was just average on defense, and Fuhr was awful too , after game one did you know the Soviets were not going to get the benefit of any doubt. They scored at will, the Soviets did if Mario had not showed up this would have been a sweep for the Soviets, and both net minders were terrible.
John Galt - Gretzky has the best career plus minus of all time among forwards. He also had the best plus minus of this Canada Cup. So there goes that theory.
@@michaelgriffiths8068 This is ancient history, at this point Gretzky was terrible in his own end, he obviously improved, and became more aware in the defensive zone, plus minus is not the best gauge of a player and his defensive skills, example Mike O'Connell used to bail out Raymond Bourque early in the defenseman's career, and his plus minus was pretty good, but the guy was clearly shaky in his own end. And Mike used to save him all the time. Same thing with Gretzky, if you are part of 5 goals, but on for 3, you are a plus , but you cost your team 3 goals. Plus minus is deceptive.
@@ericday4505 - Gretzky had a +100 season in 1984/85, but even more insane than that, he had a record +28 in the 1985 playoffs (in only 18 games, no less). I don’t care how many points you score, those are ridiculously impressive plus/minus numbers.
@@michaelgriffiths8068 It's seems someone can't take an objective look at the Great one, the guy was a terrible back checker and not very good on face offs even, especially as I said earlier in his career, having said all that, there is absolutely no one I want with the puck on a power play, if I desperately need a goal. And last time I checked he still had scored more goals than anyone, and absolutely no one will ever catch him in points overall, mark that down. I am just saying he had issues in his own end, at the NHL level, the guy was what 19 or so.
Hearing Dan Kelly calls these games is amazing! Best hockey series I ever remember.

This has to be the best Canada-Russia/Soviet series ever played. Unreal hockey
2:34 Makarov gives stick tap for Fuhrs save. That's sportsmanship. Messier would have given elbow to the jaws. That's Canadian sportsmanship.
Best hockey ever played.
Best three games of hockey ever
Canada VS USSR-----no words-----AWESOME!!!!!!
This might be the greatest hockey game ever played.
This is a forgotten somewhat game- when we hear about the 1987 Canada Cup, we hear about games 2 and 3 a lot more than game 1.
Happy 25th Anniversary to the 87 Canada Cup! TSN will be replaying all 3 games starting Tuesday night, September 11th.
Amazing to see how much faster todays hockey is! Classical games tho!

@1979morena
I agree. This was the best hockey of the century.
Go USSR!
and then again - go Russia!
НАШИ МО-ЛОД-ЦЫ!!!!
Maybe the best Canadian team of all time against the best Soviet team of all time. The big difference you notice is the quality of the goal-tending. Gretzky's records will never be broken.
Not the best Soviet team since Tretiak was no longer their keeper.
AWESOME!!!!!!
I was at this game in Montreal...it was awsome!
God do i miss this tournement...they should bring back the Canada Cup/World Championship again.
This time Sweden could play in the North American pool. USA, Canada, Sweden, Slovakia. In Europe: Finland, Russia, the czecks and maybe Switzerland.
every game was 6-5, pretty incredible hockey by both nations, but Canada kicks ass!!!
good old times
Какие красавцы были)) (

Bar none
I love the old stand-up goaltending style...so funny
Because?

grant fuhr was the best goalie in teh world in the 80s
PS. And they still score. They'er light years ahead of us, "at Hockey" and we just can't admit it, what a shame.
I don't think we are light years ahead of you John ,you guys give us Canucks a good go most of the time.
Weird how each game ended 6-5
Ага :((

Eric Day Right on the nose!

This exact Soviet team lost three Months later in Russia at the Isvestia Cup to a Canadian team of non NHL players .
Agree
Anybody notice at 7:25 the (Routine) shit thrown at the bad guys, and almost never a penalty?

if it wasnt for fuhr theylose game 2 he had 45 saves and how many of them were point blank?

Remove all the Oiler players and Canada might get a bronze Medal

I wonder what his career plus/minus is.
I was looking at some highlight videos the other day and thinking how bad he looked on D sometimes.
