    We sometimes might be deluded by opinions taking them instead of facts, but after watching this video I am fully aware of the difference between facts and opinions. Now, I can firmly say that facts are based on objectivity and verifiability whereas opinions come from subjectivity and judgements. Thank you, teacher, for that piece of knowledge. There's some confusion about what "fact" and "true" mean. Something can be presented as a fact at any moment, but it doesn't mean that it is true to reality. This is pretty complicated stuff... but so are human beings and how they thin, right? :)

    I love this. I've been researching fact vs opinion (vs belief) for my students. I teach ESL adults, so a simple video for kids hasn't satisfied my adult, critical thinking students (they are learning a new language, but often NOT new to critical thinking). However, this conversation is never-ending! My biggest question is this, because we soo quickly reach this issue. What happens (ex, in media when the FACTS are changed? Yes, research, research, research. But what "life-long learner" plan do we share for moving forward with this issue? Yep, I know this is a big one...(& I have thoughts...)

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! I'm glad you found these reading videos which, in fact, were designed for older and adult learners.
      This can get pretty philosophical quickly, but dealing with changing facts is the nature of trying to understand the world around us. We formulate hypothesis based on prior knowledge, collect evidence, and accept that our findings reveal something factual. Yet, all this is based on the probability that the new evidence we found reveals something (rarely everything) about what we want to understand. As we learn new things, we may have to go back and re-interpret (even discard) previous findings.
      I think changing facts can be jarring because we let facts become beliefs. It's easier to accept new facts than to change old beliefs. Facts are unemotional; beliefs are at the core of how we see ourselves... if that makes any sense. (Well, I told you it gets pretty philosophical LOL)
      Thanks again for using the channel with your students. I hope you're enjoying the other videos on the channel

      @@snaplanguage An example of what I mean happened in one of my classes. We were reading examples of fact and of opinion. The example was a statement about how many immigrants are allowed into this country per year per "The Immigration and [Naturalize] Act." The amount was 188,000. First, the name was incorrect. It's supposed to be Immigration and [Naturalization] Act of 1952. Then I noted that the amount was incorrect. I suppose that means our capability as citizens must include learning very high critical thinking skills and/or ability to specifically track these details ourselves in independent research. This is not likely in an entire society where education appears not to be accessible equally. Add to that what a help it would be if people could not post information unless it was first verified. but then we have to verify the verifier. An independent verifier appears to be an ultimate goal....One other example would be the way that politicians quote information that is mostly (not all are easily) identifiable as factual. Again, it appears that "misinformation" should not be allowed until it's verified. My goal here is how do I make an accurate decision on who to vote for in order to support my democracy? One moral is: when you lie, you really screw people.

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh, yes! There's that, too. I think misinformation has always existed. One of my goals when I teach critical thinking in reading is to help students become informed consumers of information.
      Going straight to the source is one way of doing that but, of course, you don't always have the drive to check everything you read. You can also go to the source and not be able to understand it because it may be too technical.
      In that case, you should check the source delivering secondhand information. Does it come from a reputable source? Do they have expertise in the area? Are they clearly biased? Do they have a history of good or bad information? One type of discussion I have with my students is, "What source would you take health advice from? A blogger? An official source?..."
      Another clue my students and I discuss is sensationalism. Is it clickbait? (You can often tell right from the title.) Is the material appealing to emotions?
      It's interesting that many students end up getting "depressed" about it all and question why you should even read if no one is telling the truth... that is another discussion in an of itself. LOL
      Thanks again for the intriguing comment.

  • @johnrainsman6650
    @johnrainsman6650 Před rokem +1

    The title speaks to me. It reminds me of my boss's opinion about me, where she thinks I can't do a shift by myself, when she doesn't even know that for a fact. What do you think? Is it wrong to use your opinion to stop something from happening--especially because you don't believe in someone--when your prediction is based on your opinion, not fact?

    "Eck's students did better in the course". Shouldn't that be an opinion rather than a fact?
    The reason why I think it should be an opinion is because it's assuming that the quality of a student's job is based on the student's grade. If it was changed to "Eck's students got a higher grade", then it would have been a fact. Right?

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Před 6 lety +17

      That is a good point, and it is also the message in the video--that fact x opinion is not always as black, so you must analyze each situation carefully. If you define "better" (that is, higher grades), then you would be presenting the information as a fact. It's a fact that students earned "better"/"higher" grades.
      However, if you say that students who earned better or higher grades are also better students or that they learned better... well, that is arguable. You are presenting the information "as a fact," but you could also argue that grades do not necessarily reflect performance. You are basing an opinion based on the fact that they earned higher grades?...

The "Interpreting what you read" playlist is related to the topic because interpreting what you read is part of being a critical reader or thinker. More videos are being created on these topics... it's a matter of time before you see one of the, so make sure to subscribe to be notified of new videos. :D

    While teaching this, I found it necessary to emphasize something that can easily trip my students. Statements that begin with "I / he / they think" or "like" something are facts, not opinions. It presents like an opinion, since "I like hamburgers" is an expression of a subjective feeling, but it is an objective statement about a subjective feeling. Tricky.

    Is false to say I think it is raining when it is raining? E.g. A man stands in the street where it rains with another man.The first man says I think it is raining and the second says it is raining. Are both correct? Also when we say dogs are better than cats we should also say in my opinion or it is obvious? and a last question..my friend didnt come to school but i know that he usually dont come school because he play video games..if i assume that he didnt come in school because of playing video games is a fact or an opinion ?

    • @KillingAddiction
      @KillingAddiction Před 5 lety

      "The first man says I think it is raining and the second says it is raining." These are both factual claims because both are either true or false. The first man either does or doesn't think it's raining, because there's no third option (i.e. thinking and, at the same time, not thinking it's raining is a logical contradiction).

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Před 2 lety

      These are both presented as facts. To verify the information, I just need to ask you. However, if I asked you why and you told me, for example, "because pears taste better than apples," that would be your opinion. How something tastes is subjective; whether or not you like something is true to someone or not.

    Would you kindly help me to understand one controversial debate! Some people say that provocative dress can be a cause of rape. Is it a fact or an opinion? Please help me.

    • @snaplanguage
      @snaplanguage  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, thanks for the interesting question.
      That’s a very complex issue. If you simply look at it simply from a “fact or opinion” perspective, when someone says “provocative dress cause can be a cause of rape,” they are *presenting it as a fact* (though they are hedging, too, if they say it “can be” a cause of rape). However, as I explained in the video, presenting something “as fact” *does not make it true.*
      People frequently do that in controversial debates; they “present something as a fact” because it sounds convincing, but you must still question whether what’s being presented as a fact is the only possible explanation for something. In the case of tying a person’s dress “causing” rape, it is a way to put the responsibility on the victim. People also say that being drunk can cause you to be raped. If you think about it, if a person is drunk, he or she is defenseless. Yes, getting that drunk is a stupid thing to do, but does that mean that the drunk person gave everyone permission to use their bodies? If I leave money on a table, does it mean anyone can steal it because “I was asking for it?” Or is stealing a crime whether I made it easy for the thief or not?
      Thanks for watching and, again, thanks for leaving a comment. :D
