My shed had taken on a decided tilt. I use home made brackets and a ratchet strap to straighten it. I then use bracing within the frame to hold it once upright. No flatheads were harmed in the making of this video. Apologies for lousy audio at the start. I have plans to improve this the next time round.
Edit: With people home on lockdown this sort of job is ideal to keep you busy. Stay safe!
Bahaha! I started smiling when the caption talked about not being able to release easily... I've been there! When it burst I got a good chuckle. Thank you for the video.
Ha ha yeah, Cheers, Rob. I learnt there is a way to release a ratchet strap gently. maybe that could be the subject of a short video. Thanks for dropping by. Mart.
Hahaha Hahaha, thanks for making me laugh...
What a great idea! I will be trying this tomorrow., think my shed is actually bowed but am going to try this combined with wedging the corners. Very helpful to leave the parts that go wrong in so I can see what to expect!
Cheers Chris. I'll mention a couple of things I didn't know at the time. Firstly you can release a ratchet strap one click at a time. It's better than letting it undo with a bang. I did a video on it. Secondly if your roof is sheet material it will resist the movement. I had a second go at mine and had to loosen the roof sheets to get it properly squared up. Anyway, good luck with it!
Mart, I really enjoy your "lessons in practicality" in your approach to your repairs. More!
Got the same problem with my 20’ x 11’ wooden workshop due to base frame rot on one side.....I’m going to wedge one side with a 4” x 4” and use scaffold boards to brace the internal A frames under the roof ........fingers crossed! 😬
Yeah, good luck with it. Mine's still standing nice and straight now, a couple of years later, so It did work well.
Thanks for sharing this information. I have the same issue with my shed. When the weather warms up I'm going to try this myself.
Thanks for watching. I did a part 2. In that I discovered that loosening the metal roofing sheets makes it much easier to straighten things up. Something to look out for. I also did a video showing how to release a ratchet strap gently. That also might be useful. Good luck with it. Mart.
@@MartsGarage thank you, I'll look for part 2.
Very clever, using the ratchet.👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Very clever indeed! I have a small structure for a water well that has starting leaning because of age and no one living on the property for years. This gives me hope that I can fix it easily without hiring a real carpenter. Lol
Thank you! This will solve my problem I do believe. You were informative and very entertaining. 😊
Thanks Sandra. If you have a metal roof it might be worth unscrewing it as it makes it difficult to pull straight. I did a part 2 and showed it in that.
Will give this a go. Wind caught our lean to and shifted it back. Was thinking of using hurricane straps to help keep it down after its squared up.
Best of luck. See if you can find part 2. I struggled because I had replaced the roof when in it's sagged state. I had to loosen the roof to get it back square. Don't know if this will be relevant in your case. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great Video ill being doing this tommorow too my radio shack in the garden as its like the tower of piza
You're a star mate 👌🏽. Good Job 👍🏽 That was educational, thank you.
Fun with Parallelograms!
My style of bodge. I have no construction skills, but if it works, it's good enough for me.
Me too, Steve. It's bodge central around here. I'm better with cars.
Brilliant.. am going to try this on my slanting shed at the allotment!
Thanks Felicity, I hope it goes well for you.
Great video , I’m going to try this -thanks
Cheers X13. See if you can find part 2. I found the roof was offering a lot of resistance to it moving. It may or may not be relevant to your job. Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
Was that adequate health and safety…. Working at height 😂
Looks like it worked well. Diagonal bracing really helps the old buildings. Yes, the audio was a bit weak.
Great information..thank you!
Thanks for dropping by!
Good work! Was the goal to make it look better, or extend its life? Is the foundation stable?
Put plywood on the inside and you’ll be fine
Excuse my stupidity, but how does using a ratchet on both sides of the shed straighten it? Surely it will just squash it together?
If you imagine a square pushed over and consider the dimensions across the diagonal corners, you will have a short dimension one way and a long dimension the other way. By having the ratchet low non one side and high on the other you are pulling the long dimension and shortening it until it matches the opposite dimension. When the two across corner dimensions are equal, the object is square again.
What's with the v8 engine in the corner?
You've always got to have a few V8s stashed away Jerry. Check some of my recent videos. I have been messing with Flatheads and there are also some Y blocks in the stash.
There is a lake in Western Montana called "Flathead Lake "it is named after the Flathead Indian Tribe as their reservation is right next to it. Anyway, there was a photo in Hot Rod Magazine a few years back showing the lake at low water level and there was an old flathead engine just sitting there, on what would normally be lake floor. I just loved that photo for the beautiful lake and the flathead V-8 Ford and maybe the intended irony or perhaps inside joke. Take care.
What was the tool called that you used?
A ratchet strap? Is that what you mean?
@@MartsGarage ah brilliant yes that's what I meant , I've got a shed with quite a lean on it and this looks like it will work , many thanks Mart
Bon
Oui, bon.
I feel unsafe watching this for some reason.
You and me both!
