Homeworld 3 Review - Was It Worth Waiting For 21 Years?

  • As the long-awaited mainline sequel in the sci-fi RTS series, Homeworld 3 is finally upon us. While offering exceptional production values, including sharp visuals, there's enough strategic depth to satisfy long-standing fans of the series.
Thankfully, Homeworld 3 brings some new elements to the franchise, from cover mechanics and derelict structures that require their use to new tactics. While some mechanics, like the new ship abilities, can tend to overcomplicate encounters. Some additional polish is also welcome when it comes to unit pathfinding and specific bugs.
Nevertheless, if you're looking for a solid sci-fi RTS with a strong campaign and some interesting new modes like the rogue-like War Games, Homeworld 3 is worth a look.

I would not recommend that, The plot is bland, the acting in the cut scenes is bad. The controls arent really convenient. The maps are always in some sort of wreckage which doesnt really make sense. The map interactibles like debris for cover more a nuinsance than a gameplay feature, you can accidently click on them and your ships will hug some wall and not take part in fighting. The rogue-like mode is meh, I am a big fan of rogue-likes, but this thing is not even full thought mode. Doesnt really make you to explore all it has to offer.
I am very dissapointed. Huge fan of HW series. Played Complex Mod a lot. Complex Mod is far more better than this.

This game is gorgeous. Despite being an simpler experience to HW2, it does honour the franchise and its roots.
HOWEVER. The game is rather thin at times. There are no WTF moments. No "Karak is Burning" or "Cut us loose!" I was waiting for that holy sh%T moment, but it never came.
Also, I will admit I'm a little let down that HW3 is the shortest of all of them, including DOK and Cataclysm. At only 13 main campaign missions, at medium difficulty, I had the game wrapped in under 9 hours, and that includes the last mission, which I had to restart as it was the only one that really offered a challenge.
I mean it's a good game. I guess I was wanting more. It has a singular plot point where the previous ones had you going off in different directions with different subplots. The cinematics were amazing, but they were also long...very long, and I wonder if they spent more time on missions, we could have had a longer, more satisfying experience. The previous games got by with animated paintings--did we really need near-photorealistic characters talking to each other for five minutes between missions?

The way combat plays out in terms of distance, movement, how fighters maneuver, how projectiles are shown and displayed in contrast to how the ships are reacting and dealing with it, etc is in my opinion is mostly boring and isn't as epic compared to HW1. It feels arcade like. Even the remake didn't do it justice because it was remade in the HW2 engine (which turned weapons into hitscan instead of actual projectiles, at least HW3 does this). Something just feels so mobile-like about the gameplay, instead of epic fights in space. They made sure the background objects give you a sense of scale, and then use that scale to appreciate the ships themselves but then how the fights of the ships play out is in knife range and even larger ships seem like just another fighter craft to not care about. It's like you get the impression you're in the Atlantic/Pacific Ocean for a battle (analogy) but the actual combat happens in a backyard pool. It's very compressed. It totally takes away from the scale scope of the map and how you would think a fight would happen. It almost makes the aspect of fighting in space pointless. Plus HW1 made you care about each craft to some degree but here it's just feels cheap and throwaways. Get a few pretty flashes of color for the dopamine hit. There's no real impact to the fights like HW1 felt or even Cataclysm. Glad I didn't pre-order. Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way.

    • @Corusame
      @Corusame Před 28 dny +6

It’s a small nit pick but I dislike that the game forces me to go to the next mission once the objectives are completed. I want the option to hyperspace when I feel ready, I like to collect the rest of the resources and rebuild the ships I lost. Plus putting the new ships into a strike fleet.
I don’t want to jump into a new mission and have to do all that while defending from enemies.
Also this game holds your hand a little too hard. Intel is always telling me where to go or what to do or how to do it, let me figure that shit out and stop disturbing my game. I can understand once every mission but some missions have 4 or 5 times where Intel takes me away when I’m trying to gather resources or send out strike fleets and it’s just a tad bit annoying.

I never felt like this was a desperate last attempt at survival or grand revelation on galactic views. Better off keeping the enemy largely unknown or maybe Karan truly went crazy as Sajuuk-Khar. Or an outside galactic threat, (bentusi return perhaps?), or the beast.

This game is a no go for me, the decision to make this game in Unreal Engine 5 (although beautiful to look at) gave the game some really big downsides. The controls are just horrendous, selecting units and giving them orders is annoying as hell in combination with the camera controls. Tactics of approaching certain ships and target sub-systems is another one, but the units also feel so off and weak. And some of the ships had some really stupid design choices, as in putting turrets in a hole.....why aren't these things mentioned. Having the battlecruiser made by another production facility, and the only one needed for that, made the mothership instantly redundant as a critical part of the game in HW2.
Not only did it do that to the mothership, where it basically became just another carrier, it then made the battlecruiser and shipyard a wasted effort when the progenitor dreadnought and sajuuk itself showed up later.
This game marks a return to form of having the mothership a critical piece of the game like HW1 and Cataclysm/Emergence did, which instantly upped the stakes in any mission.

When Homeworld was released in 1999, it was without a doubt innovative.
There is nothing innovative about the HW3, except maybe the large objects in the space, which is not a real innovation.
Same ships, even smaller number of units, no original unit actually, one single type of corvette, same type of missions, capture that, defend that, go further.
No surprise in the story as I understand, no emotional connection with the characters. The whole plot is actually boring and generic.

Same feelings. The narrative creates the impression that more pompous words need to be pushed out, as in cheap patriotic movie scenes and with the same infantile childish joy. The old parts were laconic and that was their highlight. Plus in the old parts people seemed serious having experienced many hardships and adversities weighing every word every decision who over many thousands of years of bedouin harsh life in the sands had learned to keep emotions under complete control.

So the solution is too dumb down all the mechanics and slap a coat of new graphics on it? That's your "new RTS" wave? Fuck that shit. Why don't developers invest in better interface and UI instead of just dumbing gameplay down? If you look at games that actually care about gameplay over graphics you'd see a lot of improvements made to command interface that allow a much better experience even with higher demands on mechanics knowledge.
They could have just used Homeworld 1 gameplay as the base and added a difficulty mode with some mechanics removed to lighten the load on inexperienced players while investing their time in UI and controls.
