I switched when most of the drummers I followed (Ringo, Bonham, Ian Paice) were using matched grip. About a year ago I switched back to traditional to see how it felt. Having liked the results, I mostly use trad grip now.
When you're wielding 2B broomhandles like Mjolnir......what do you expect? Unca Cozy wore his heart on his sleeve and took great pride in the art of drumming. He got out his frustrations, rightly so, and did it his way🤘⚔️😎! Look how many drummers credit Ol' Cozy as one of their main influences because he kicked 'er in the arse🤘!

When you hear of the great rock drummers, you hear Bonham, Moon, Peart, Baker. Well add one more to that list, because Cozy Powell is on that list! I got to see him 4-5 times in Rainbow, and once with Michael Schenker Group, and he was outstanding! One of the coolest drummers ever too. R.I.P
I Was Fortunate To See Cozy Powell with Rainbow Back In 1980. It Was On The "Down To Earth" Tour At The Long Beach Arena, CA. I Also Attended The Emerson, Lake and Powell (ELP) Concert Back In 1986. It Was At The Pacific Amphitheater In Costa Mesa, Ca. Two Incredible Tours!!
Absolutely fantastic! The rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 coming in 2/3rds of the way through is brilliant. I always thought that the 1812 is more rock than classical. If you see what I mean :)
So sad to see Dio come on at the end and say "Cozy Powell" and now they're both no longer with us. 2 legends. Thank goodness for the invention of the camera, or we'd never get to see any of this.

Just seen this performance on CZcams. OMG what a performance. I remember quite vividly witnessing a similar performance at the Manchester Appollo back in 77. For such a small guy he had the hardest biggest hit. And as a previous post states. When you hear thunder it's Cozy Powell having a bash on his drum kit.
Excellent drummer and probably the coolest to watch total stick control though he changed grips to suit the songs! He always had a pristine sound too. RIP Cozy!

Only saw Cozy once and that was with ELP. That's right, Emerson, Lake and Powell at The Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta GA. He had an acrylic drum set with lights in each drum that lit for a second when he struck them and was able to have them all lit at the same time. I saw Cozy play with ELP one day so satisfied I saw him play.
To all the drummers that say “you can’t get any power from your snare using traditional grip”… I present to you… Cozy Powell!!!
And he used trees for Sticks.
Cozy is without doubt a member of the drum legends.

Cozy was an impressive rock drummer, but what really sticks out is his drum tone... very unique kick drum and tom sound.
Probably why SAMPLES of his drumming are still used everywhere.
He used the same size rack toms and floor toms. I think his racks were 15” and his floors were 18”. I’m assuming he tuned them all differently
