Pont Croesor Level Crossing

  • Welsh Highland Railway NGG16 Garratt Steam Loco No.138 in Crimson Lake passes across the main crossing at Pont Croesor heading to Nantmor before Welsh Highland Railway NGG16 Garratt Steam Loco No.87 in Colonial Blue passes across both crossings here heading into Pont Croesor Station, before it heads out to Porthmadog Harbour. There are two crossings which are operated as one crossing with eight lights. See my other video for the other crossing. One of the lights on this crossing has an extra long pole and because of the bend in the road, the lights on one side of the track are positioned on the same side of the road, which is the only layout like this in the UK. I'm surprised that this was allowed under the regulations when this was first built. The railway crosses the River Glaslyn next to the road on quite a long bridge. The 'STOP' markings on the ground are also not necessary as every driver would have to stop at them by law before crossing the crossing. By those terms, every driver who doesn't stop is breaking the law. That would be every car that crosses then. The car that pulled up and reversed had seen me and reversed out of the way of the camera, scuffing his wheel on the kerb. I thank him and you should too for giving you a clear view of the train. Bloody idiot for scraping his wheel.

Two years ago (2017) this crossing failed when I was on the train (heading towards Porthmadog). Luckily they fixed it.

Wait, if you look closely, you can see four more lights and signs in the background. Does this mean there are two next to each other? That is very rare

+BenTheEpic That is Pont Croesor B crossing, but both crossings act as one and activate at the same time

+BenTheEpic I agree, this might be so rare for this to be the only one in wales to act like this, the only other I have seen that act like this next to each other was Southampton around the Canterbury road level crossing area.

+BurrLD I just managed to lean down and grab the tripod legs to pull it back up about 30 seconds before the crossing went off in the video
