- Rank underdog Australia stuns the Windies to win the first final of the 1984/85 Benson & Hedges World Series Cup at the SCG. The match was dominated by Allan Border's first innings 127, coming to the wicket at 2/7. Highlights of the West Indies run chase.

We loved and respected WI players a lot. What a team WI was. Missing that golden period of cricket.
This marks the end of amazing era of cricket dominated by great WI lead by great Clive Lloyd with Greenidge, Haynes, Gomes, Richards, Logie, Dujon, Holding, Marshall, Garner and Roberts. The names remain in my heart for ever just like their wonderful gentlemenly cricket.
They dominated for almost another decade after this match.
Lloyd, Greenidge, Haynes, Holding and Richards did eventually retire but the West Indies did not lose a test series until March 1995 in the West Indies against Australia. That is 11 years after this match.
@@jamess6097 Lloyd retired in 85, Garner and Holding 87 (replaced by Patterson, Bishop and Ambrose), Richards and Greenidge in 91, Marshall and Dujon in 92, and Haynes in 94. Richie Richardson went a year after that watershed loss to Australia in 95.
@@Bernie8330 Exactly. I think we agree the OP called the "end of the era" 10 years too soon! It sure didn't feel like the end of the West Indies era when Richie Richardson smashed that 182 against us in Georgetown in the 1991 tour or when Curtly Ambrose took 7-1 against us in Perth in 1993!!
@@jamess6097 For sure. Even after 1995, they were still a formidable foe any day either Ambrose or Lara hit form. Only after the turn of the new century did they rapidly become shite.
My hero as a kid. Started watching cricket bcz of him! ❤ from India 🇮🇳
No comparison to great viv,he is fearless batsman, even 40 years before ,he played test match or one day match like 20.20.still no batsman in the world born like viv.
😊
Lllĺ
See the delight from Australian players after getting viv's wicket..it clearly showed how great impactful player viv was..
lucky considering he was dropped twice!
@@melthoidserendipity1332 He was dropped three times...
He was the dominant batsman of his era. Bowlers of all hues were treated impartially . No bowler in world cricket could boast of bowling fearlessly to him . Kapil Imran Hadley Botham Lilee Thomo Willis or whoever
Viv Richards, the greatest cricketer of all time.
Unparalleled, Unmatched, Most Respected all times Sir I.V.A.Richard. I always watch his batting videos ❤
I was at this match. Sat in the Pat Hills Stand and got baked all afternoon by the sun, then that glorious victory. We didn't have very many wins over the West Indies in those days.
Fantastic Paulie. Would've been an amazing atmosphere.
We? Forgive me but I didn’t see your name on the score sheet champ
@@thedancinghobo6165 it was a great game
Nobody did in this era.
@@thedancinghobo6165 That's a pathetic comment for two reasons: 1. In any sport 'we' is used by supporters of a certain team and 2. Nothing is more pitiful than 'champing' somebody.
sir viv richard is the prince of cricket!
Viv was the best batsman I ever seen, he was the most consistent batsman the west Indies ever had.
Sobers and Lara were just as good, though not better.

Pppppp0ppp
There wasn't, there isn't & there will not be one like VIV
Agree., Viv is the best batsman.
Yes
Vasu Devan, what a waste for a player of Richards's class to waste away in T20 when he was such a fabulous test batsman as well as in proper one day cricket.
Lyoyd wàs a beautiful player, very much under appreciated. In my opinion among he best of his age.
Power hitter sir, vv Richard sir
King Richard was a unique great batsman۔ Richard is the only one۔ Love u king since my childhood 1984۔
No one can near Sir Viv. He is my ultimate never before never after.
A few have come near him, though even fewer have bettered him.
@@Bernie8330 Yep! To each his own.
King of cricket sir viv
So rare were our wins over the Windies in the 80’s, that I had this game on VHS and must have watched it 50 times.
Look at Sir Lloyd, his hooks and drives were lethal.

Yes absolutely clive loyed was treat and lethel batsman specialist in hook shot

Vivian Richards never believed to create personal record. All of his best inning is an epic. Cricket will seldom see Richards, perhaps!!
So true,i am always desperate to see a player like Vivian Richard, but no, there is none like him, before and after.
What a team of West Indies at that time unbelievable and unbeatable
No it was beaten many times by Australia. Get the records.
@@jayendrapatel3673 Beaten when it didnt matter! Or Australia would win at the SCG because been a spinning wicket, Windies were not that good at playing spin especially at the SCG. But overall Windies were too good for Australia in that time late 70s to early to mid 90s 👌
Check the scoreboard Australia won many finals
@@neilwales7543 in cricket u have yo play spin and fast both.if u are not able to play any of them it is your fault.West indies lost many games against australia. In australia it lost the series 5-1 in 1975/76.
Richards played without wearing helmet and other cricketing gear. The man was a marvel indeed. Today's great batsmen who play wearing heavy defensive armour on their person cannot be compared to him. He always dominated over bowlers of all hues. He was and is my favourite cricketer.
Tarsem Bumrah you mean to say h didn't even wear a Guard.
Tarsem Bumrah lol
Vivian Richards ,was gifted ,with one of the best pair of eyes , ever in Cricket ; that was why he could judge a ball ,and get out of the way without using an helmet !. He was just very ,very special
I agree but do not exaggerate it. Bats,en of that age were used to that and many lesser players also did nit wear helmets or very little. Like Larry Gomes, Clive Lloyd, Ian Chappell Greg, Gavaskar on many ocassions, etc.
It was an absolute pleasure to watch Viv bat, he was the most consistent batsman the west Indies ever had.
What a great player Richards was, the kind of strokes & class he demonstrated was simply outstanding.
Perhaps the best in the business.
when viv gets out, the celebration is genuine, like a thorn viv was, scoring runs freely. capable of obliterating any attack. dont think any other evidence needed to show viv as king. even crowd knew how important this one wickets was. viv used to invoke the fear of defeat in the opponents eyes. alpha male, direct descendant of semos.
Listen live on radio those days and watched highlights days after on Tv.
it was almost like viv Richards wanted to get out . At least 5 missed chances, all tough ones though. People loved to him bat, even if you are not West Indies, Lara , viv Richards are such timeless greats that you root for them to score in every match.
In today's cricket all some of those would've been boundaries
What do u mean by 'at least 5 missed chances', that Richards gave?... Can u bloody count⁉️.. There was 2 dropped by Wood that were difficult (the one running and one dived), and the other by Alderman - who was running down to deep mid. So there was only 3 that ol' 'Smokin' Joe' gave.
My mum took me to the game as a kid, shame to miss the Aus innings, Aus were on the back foot until Border scored 100+. The Windies flogged Aus during that test series and Border took over the captaincy from Kim Hughes I believe for the 5th test at Sydney. What a brilliant team the WI were back then. Then came the Aussie rebuild under border, that was also Mcdermott's first series - he was our hero and we would wear zinc on our noses and bottom lip! I can remember the cheering for Australia when we won, those were the days! Fantastic innings of 42 to Malcolm Marshall, RIP. Thanks for the upload!
ohhh you lucky man tell me about your age now .
Mcdermott, that promising lad, who lost all form after this season. And was brilliant only very inconsistantly after this debut season.
I thought this game would be interesting, and it looked familiar to me. When the commentator mentioned that it was Allan Border, coming in at 2-7 and hitting 127 not out, it confirmed my ageing memory, I was at that game. Border's highest one day score for Australia.
I had just started Year 8 and being in Queensland, without daylight saving, the game was two hours in when I got home from school at 3.30. However, I didn't get to see any of Border's innings because, being on a dairy farm, and me being the oldest son, I had to help my father milk the cows. Saw all the run chase though, bar the part obscured by the nightly news on channel 9.
what a great batsman Vivian Richard
great match of great players of past
Used to have this on VHS back in the day..do you have the 2nd final where the Windies win with Haynes and Richards?
marshall ..u beauty ... RIP
What a great memories of past real cricket.evry thing was great.that era wad golden age of cricket.can some one bring back that old real cricket.
Loved how Benaud would add his French twist to Jeff Dujon. The silent J
He defined aggressive batting
😢 so good to watch an absolute classic
10.06 what a umpiring man...
V Richards was a great player of world
Sir Viv incredible cricketer
महान अभिवादन विवियन रिचर्ड्स👊
13:11 MRF Bats in use, legends' Bats
The Windies were household names and 'rock stars' in the 80s in Aus. Anyone notice that the uniforms are the same just different colours? Teams didn't have their own clothing kit then. Can you believe the Australian Cricket Board would have ordered and provided the jerseys for the West Indies players?
This man, Vivian Richards is fantastic to watch, whether he scores or not, every moment of his is spectacular, unfortunate are today's generation, they see the virat, dhoni, sachin, de Villiers etc, they get bonkers seeing this players, imagine if viv was playing today, with bat of highest quality, flat pitches, restriction on bouncers, distance of boundary of shorter distance, etc imagine this would have been a biryani for viv,I would say viv was the greatest batter with unique style of his own, thanks for this video, God bless.
Don't mention Sachin in the sameness sentence as Devillers and Dhoni and Kohli. Tendulkar was as good as Viv.
Srinivas Pillai ofcourse you are true .....
What a match. Most entertaining.
Viv bowing to the crowd is pure class
Rod McCurdy the match winner. Picked up 3 important wickets. Shame we didn’t see more of him on the world stage.
Viv Richards, one man army
Try star batsman in perhaps the greatest team there's ever been.
Old is gold
My fvt bowler all the time was Joel garner
That old era when after a catch frame freezes and scores are not flashing like s**t in the bottom middle of the screen but quietly at top right of the Screen Umpires actually paying attention to what's happening except Buckner ... What a golden age for cricket till 2003
great memories... Thanks
His name was ijeck vivian Alexander Richards and where there is a Alexander in the name inevitably there is victory glory and majesty he was the simply the best
Back when 3's were considered normal
80s cricket is all about timing & guts
WI played harshly, i mean that shot from Desmond Haynes was silly. Gus Logie also perished with an Ariel shot. Richards also took way too many risks and finally got out. All WI had to do was take singles/doubles and the odd boundry would bring them near to their target without loosing too many wickets.
The days before spinners were seen as important in one day cricket. Australia running the 4 quicks plus O’Donnell. Yet Dutchy Holland took them apart in the test played at Sydney that season
Look at this Windies team, and the current one touring India. And we are celebrating how well our Batsmen are playing.
beauty and legends of game...
Viv all time most destructive Batman.
sir viv and lloyd is the best players in world
Viv was the greatest batsman I ever saw. Unique talent
100 %correct
One of the reasons Viv Richards got dropped so often was he hit the ball so bloody hard! Prolly fielders dreaded the catch coming to them for that reason plus they didn't want to be the one to drop it and cost their team the game, so they weren't mentally ready to be the hero to take a match winning catch when the opportunity did arrive. If one opposition batsman can have this effect on most of the opposition fielding side, that is one phenomenal batsman. The only way Australia were going to win this game, having done most other things right in this game, was if one of their bowlers could hit Viv's stumps ...
OrkrH
Hard hitting was done by Clive Llyod not by viv richards.
@@jayendrapatel3673 Both of them.
Richards 68 in 88 balls, with four lives, is forgettable.
Two of them were only chances in the technical sense, the hardest catches of all, chasing a skied ball in the same direction it is travelling, and the other was hit so hard on the full to the in fielder.
@@Bernie8330 but such catches are Normally not drop in today cricket.
Great stuff!!
Thanks!
@13.45
My brothers and I would always run up to the tv to try catch the ball first. Good times.
Entry
great video, 6 Feb 1985.
To make a catch like this , you require none other than the great KAPIL
What a ball it was to Dujon and Richards by Craig McDermott the man who has 2 ten-fers and 14 five fers his inswing has a cunning spell, Aussies are the only side that West Indies were concerned about and for good reasons unlike Imran Khan and Kapil Dev, David Boon, Jeff Marsh, Allan Border they don't overhype their team in news media instead they likes to finish their rivals on the field, I would really like to see this West Indies side against Ponting and Waugh's 2003 side it would be a match of the century,
Golden period of cricket
Until you understand that viv richards would absolutley demolish good line and length.....then you realise how good he was......hiis centre of gravity and hawk eye alowed him to dominate with his crossbat technique.....explayers always said that when viv hit the ball,it sounded different....thanks for the memories viv.....your generation was the best....nothing compares......

two best one day batsmen VIV RICHARDS and DESMOND HAYNES
Srinivas Rao hardsex
They couldn't equal the great great Sachin Tendulkar and Ponting on those days.
Viv. was best. No batsman on earth could or can ever match his style, skills or temperament.
No Sachin shot and de willers shot are much worth seeing if u are not biased.
From world greatest toworldbeater
Back then when fielders didn't throw themselves at the ball instead chased it and batters were faster between the wickets than fielders....
Rubbish!
Kepler Wessel playing for Australia......He captained South Africa also.
Do u have the 2nd final of 1985 aust vs west indies game?
Possibly... if I find it I'll post it.

Sir Vivian Richards is a great player for the west indies
When Viv was out, Australian victory✌ was sure.
What a delight to watch this match. I wish WI won it but it is worth seeing great like Haynes, Gomes, The big cat Lloyd and the imperial Richards.
