Man and wife playing together just great to watch.
I find it remarkable the amount of rot that you've removed from Sarinda so far. You both have really stumbled on something with that garage floor paint. See you next week!
You should put rat disks on all the lines, all big boats have them to keep rodents out when staying for a long time. They should be about the size of a Lp record in a non chew-able material secured on all lines about a yard from the boat. There is a good reason they were invented long ago as rats climb very well on almost anything, or invite a strong cat to live onboard and clean and feed it instead, up to you, it was tradition to have a ships cat back in the day. Happy hunting.
Fun fact... Those disks are required by the ports to keep the rats from coming ashore.
@@mhoover If they work one direction they should work the other, but rats can swim so if they climb or fall of a ship odds are high they would survive and make it ashore, but the disks would stop them getting on again or to lett "local" rats aboard. I think it is in the ships interest more to have them on all lines in every port. If I had a wooden ship and/or with food stored aboard I would insist on having them.
You are really remarkable, in that you can make the same video replacing frames every week for years, and I’ll watch it every week. Your tenacity is truly admirable.
Little Miss Muckit sat on her bucket scraping Sarinda away. Along came Simon who wasn’t a pieman and so she stayed hungry all day.
Wow, you guys have taken on a serious difficult project with this old boat. I enjoy watching you guys work on it and how you handle the problems encountered, over come the problems eventually and make a mess into nicely redone project.
Thank you very much!
@@ShipHappensUKhi hope you don’t mind Gemma and Simon I’ve messaged you on Facebook 👍
To use the brace place one hand on the mushroom shaped end to apply pressure, use the other hand in the middle of the "cranked section" to rotate the brace. Simples .🙃Can also be used for drilling holes.
Internally, if you want to know where rats or mice are getting in or moving about, then lightly sift some flour onto the area and look for the footprints. Sometimes you can track them back and the flour is harmless.
They use to use a shield on the rope's stop rats entering a ship from the docks many years ago try cutting a large plastic disc to slip round the ropes to stop entry to the boat ❤
@@marksmith-ew7irships still use rat guards on their mooring lines.
Yes, Simon , it definitely looks like a 'rat-shaped hole'. As opposed to any old hole that a rat could just get through. Great line - made me laugh (even more than your everyday banter). Enjoying it all!
The work that the two of you are doing on this ship is unreal. Love it, keep up the great work.
Thank you Gemma and Simon for doing my friday night as always. Thanks for the inspiration 👊
I could watch you two for hours, apart from the mammoth project it's your accent that gets me every time😂 love it, cheers from Aussie.
Couple a bits a boat 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I truly love what you guys are doing for this old girl.❤
That old tool is known as a 'brace', the drill shank was known as the 'bit', together they were called a 'brace and bit', They were the essential tool of any builder, carpenter, voat builder before electric drills came along. I inherited my one from my father, who was given it by his father when he became an apprentice at age 14, so back in the 1940's.
Hats off to you guys for cracking on! 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻
My father referred to that tool as a "brace and bit" and I agree, it's a lovely tool.
Thank you for the rat update. We were curious what had happened with the little rodent invader and if you caught anything in the traps. I imagine they can do quite a bit of damage over time if left unchecked, especially on a wooden boat. Timely spotting of that hole in the transom area.
I think it is a joint thing. You are saving Sarinda but she is also saving you two. What else would you be putting your talents to ? As for Roland, get some bulk peppermint oil, citronella oil or eucalyptus oil and spread it around the boat and especially at suspected entry points. He wouldn't have come aboard alone, he'll be having parties and babies if he gets a chance. He can swim, climb and eat his way through many materials but hates the above aromas.
Nice to see the old Brace and Bit in action and it's cordless cool.
Brace and bit...propper old school tools...you can still buy a canvas tool roll with boring bits and screwdriver blade attachments to go with it and put it to good use...my grandad was a boatbuilder on the Thames as was his dad going right back to Queen Victoria..
I remember winters in the shipyards the cold got right through your bones lol.
been following from the start,,,, amazed that you taken on this money pit and nice to see its slowely being sorted,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
You guys really need a crew of volunteers to help with cleaning, sanding, painting. I think I'll die of old age before Sarinda is done!!
Did I actually just hear Simon say you were normal people? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 You guys ARE brilliant together, but normal? 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️
Simon is right about glues that "dry out" they shrink, but two part resins don't dry out they have a chemical reaction, so Shrinkage shouldn't be a factor.
When I saw Simon with the old brace I immediately thought of Steve from Acorn to Arabella and his saying "fast tools make fast mistakes, slow tools make slow mistakes"
Gemma and Simon will get there no doubt, but I do think they bought a couple of Cat diesels encased in a boat shaped box. I love there enthusiasm and drive. Good on you guys, love ya!
That Red paint in the bilge is probably “Red Lead” paint. Very common on older boats. Extremely durable but toxic if inhaled. Treat it with caution and wear all the protective gear.
the rats are climbing up the ropes and getting aboard we use to put rat guards around the ropes to stop them just finished the book THE 1944 DIARIES makes good reading all the best to you both
watching you two is so uplifting, how you keep your spirits high I will never know, you both have the patience of all the saints. well done and thank you for keeping us all entertained in your quest.
Also you can take your worn out oscillating blades and grind them to make different sizes of paint scrapers. Saves buying the new scraper blades too.
You two are amazing. Keep up the great work and good luck getting rid of the 🐀!
You can make Rat guards from a used funnel Plastic/tin your choice, cheaper than store brought ones.
I would suggest the rat is climbing your ropes. If that is the case, you’ll need a rat guard for each rope that goes to the shore from the boat. This is what we use on the big ships.
great work you two love watching you working together its so nice far better than any soap opera
Wow, thank you!
Going back to the episode where you encountered a rat and the other episode where you though that the rat may be getting into the boat then pay attension to the outside mooring ropes ropes, it would be a good idea to fit metal or plastic discs such a large paint tin or plastic bucket lids to the ropes to stop any predator from entering the boat excluding squirels who have an IQ of nearly 200 and will bypass anything in their path.
This ship is so blessed to have the both of you. Truly blessed.
I bet you wouldn’t have bought the boat if you knew how rotten it is. It amazes me how you both keeps smiling and laughing. I think I would’ve cried 😂. My hat and my heart goes out to you both 👍👍 you’ll get there in the end, I hope I’m still alive by then 😂😂
You need to put disks on the mourning lines. They sell them or you could make them. You see them on cruise ships when the are at port to keep out the rats
Another really sexy old school tool is the pump action "Yankee Screwdriver". I think Stanley made a version in the UK.
Good job you found that hole in your transom and not below the water line,
Hello mates John and Marie here what is funny 😂🤣 I go to home Depot in the USA to the paint department say out loud paint your boat time sometimes someone knows what that means have a good day John and Marie 😌
My dad has one of those when I was a kid in the sixties.
He called it a brace and bit.
In an age when the battery powered tool is king, it's refreshing to see a bit of old tech being put back into use 👍Definately more in tune with Sarinda's age 😊
I now store my battery powered tool away from the house, after a neighbor had a fire caused by a battery.
When I retired I went through my tools and picked out a screwdriver like this. Held it behind my back and offered it to some apprentices as a 'cordless screwdriver',. A lot of hands shot up. The look of dismay on their faces was a delight.
That finger sander is a cool bit of kit Guy's. Im looking forward to the transom refinish.
Primer paint will get dirty pretty quickly. It dries with a texture (or tooth) to help subsequent coats stick better and tends to attract dust unless covered with a top coat. The gloss floor paint may be tricky to add another coat to because it doesn’t have a tooth and is smooth. The red paint in the bilge maybe red lead or just red oxide. Probably need to test it.
Hi Simon, sadly, that "brace and bit" isn't EXACTLY how it is supposed to be used 😅
Its a batteryless drill 😊
If you want to add to your " old school " tools, then you want wats called a " Yankee screwdriver " again, a batteryless tool
My dad, who had been a carpenter for 45 years until retirement, used to use it all the time
That is what was used to construct your boat. I’m 80 and it cracks me up when I see what you youngster’s don’t know what you don’t know. 😂🤪🍺
I've got a couple of braces and a collection of auger drills, one of the braces I have, I bought 50 years ago with my pocket money and still in use today. 👍
they have to easy what with the power and battery tools. Nothing wrong with hand tools. 👍👍
Thing is folks we all have to learn by experience and I’ll bet there was stuff when you were young that you probably did the same.
Take the electricity away today and 80% of people would be lost the brace is a very universal tool drill ,auger ,hole saw and screwdriver
Work goes on, love your energy and determination to keep a top quality job 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
If your going to use a lot of two pack paint Gemma, you need a full head air helmet with pumped air from outside. You can get back / belt packs but in confined spaces you will need a ton of filters. Two pack is a stronger paint, but has a high health hazard to your lungs, more so than any other paint, which is untreatable and for life. Emphysema is one, and get that bad you will need oxygen bottles to breath with eventually in later life or sooner.
We don’t use any two pack paint, two pack is to hard to use on wood that flex’s
You are one of my favorite channels., Keep up the good work.
Try wire wool in the rat-hole and every similar hole. It would be great if you can get stainless steel wire wool which won't make a mess, but you'll be tweezering bits of it out of your clothes and skin for months after!
Aaand then he puts it straight in the epoxy! 😂😂
Hi folks it’s great to watch you both see ya next time Eddie from kent
You hold the round pad at the end and apply pressure as you turn the ratchet! Handy tool this! Jobro just bought the 1944 diary !
take it off!! take it off!!!!
Work progresses…….⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️
My Dad had a tool like that! 1:20
My dad was a carpenter for 55 years he had two brace and bits one used with screwdrivers and the other for drills and I now have one and my brother-in-law has the other you're both doing a great job under tough conditions 😂❤
Guys, I did a test patch on my narrowboat using Leyland garage floor paint, the test patch is on the stern deck where you step off and on. Ive had excellent results, with two years of muddy boots. The paint is still good. All the best guys
Thanks
There is a mice infused foam spray that mice won’t touch as it has anti mice built in. May help in those areas that you can’t fix right now but need to plug up and would be easy to remove. Good luck.
I think I have seen on some boats the use of spinning discs on the ropes that stop rodents climbing up them. Maybe even half pop bottles would do the same thing.
I really admire the way you keep going in the face of so many nasty surprises, so I have sent you a little bit of cash, it’s not as much as I would like but I am on a pension. I love the banter and the way you work together. Thank you for the hours of entertainment you give me Peter
Wow, thank you
Don’t let this latest setback get to you.👍👍👍
How do you date wood ? Well start by going out for a coffee or some drinks lol 😂😂😂😂😂 ps those wires are really bugging me lol they need to be in a proper cable tray/gutter what ever you want to call it lol
There are cones you can add to your mooring lines, to stop rats running up them. I would think they are still available. Carry on the good work.
Never give up, have vision in completing
cause that a history, an experience also as couple
working hand in hand to have a home grid in a well repaired ship
Nice Brace and Bit. I had one of those from my Great uncle. He worked for Cammell Laird at Birkenhead. I passed to to a friend who is also a trained shipwright from Cammell Laird's, so it's still 'in the family' so to speak.
Good morning having worked on Boats for many years and knowing that the Royal Navy specifications for marine paints in this time period is particularly high in white lead pastes and red lead powders there is a high risk of you breathing in these dangerous materials particularly useing those simple ill fitting dust masks when sanding grinding and cutting. You need special masks and filtres to do this work.
You are both doing a super job and best wishes to you both.
Terry Maguire
You don’t have rat cones on your anchor lines and they will def walk those lines. Also they jump quite high. Persevere!
😂😂😂Where he escaped from.😂😂😂😂 You guys are great entertainment ❤❤
Given the extent of rot in you ship, I believe the problem of water ingress was present perhaps when the craft was new. This situation was either because of materials, design, or both. Obviously, you are trying to reconstruct the craft so that it can sail once again. However as you refurbish things, keep in mind the inherent problems that brought the ship to where it is and seek to make it immune to those prior issues/problems. Please note that I think you are doing a superb job and I look forward to seeing things progress. Cheers!
Rats are excellent swimmers, swim across to the mooring lines then climb up.
The red paint in your bilge I have no doubt is what was called "tinners red". That coating has an exceptionally high lead content as it was used to coat the inside of wooden box gutters that were built into the roofs of homes built from the 1890's to the 1930's in the US. Think of it like lead in a brush on form used as waterproofing. Be very cautious. 👍 Tinners red as a color is still available today, without lead.
You two have made a lot of progress on Sarinda. I'm enjoying watching it 😄
Bit and Brace...the original Carpnter's cordless. That's how holes were drilled when I was a kid. As for screws, the incredible Yankee Screwdriver was invented that could drive a 2 inch screw in one second.
That transom is one serious piece of work to be done and the rot there will only get worse as time passes good luck 😊😊
Well done both of you
Great to see all the amazing work you are both doing. Just a thought to be aware of areas where rats have been. In and around the water Weils disease could be lurking. Often overlooked as we all get on with daily life afloat, but it is a nasty disease, and worth being mindful of its existence. Best of luck and keep up the good work
Just love your humor GREAT😂😊
Hey, really nice work you guys are doing! Consider making some "rat guards" for your mooring lines to keep the rats out. Ships use them every time they come into port to keep the little buggers out. It's likely how their getting on your boat. You could make them for cheap out of a frisbee. Cheers from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦 P.S... I live about a half hour away from Oak Island lol ✌️
Have they found the treasure yet!
@user-bn9rm9qy5n Haha, I think they're still working on it! But ya know... If they find that treasure, that'll mean the end of the show. Or maybe the show is the bottomless treasure trove for those dudes... 🤔😜
This was the first episode in quite some time that reminded me you still have a lot of work to do! I kind of fooled myself into thinking "The deck is this summer!" and that would be it. It will be a huge accomplishment, but that won't be it (yet).
Theyll be more than one Rat !!
Great stuff. I am always surprised, and pleased for you, when you remove a frame that has turned to dry bread and the hull underneath that it was sitting on is just fine. Thankfully. Hope things keep moving and you get to replace the deck this summer. Perhaps those panels were inserted to protect the hull from something banging against the hull planks from inside the engine room. Maybe you could make those discs you see on mooring lines to stop rats from climbing aboard. The brace will be the perfect tool to use on the bronze screws - so much control.
Lots & lots of work. Things are going very well
I agree with Simon, bikini shots, definitely help, and get you to 100, 000 subs! 😂😂
I can't believe how rotten that poor boat was/is, your dedication is unrivalled, you guys are brilliant!! 🍻
It’s for sure if Mr Rat can get out he can get back in…..I’ve seen them climb up brickwork…getting into lofts
Great program TheCurse Of Oak Island I’ve watched every episode just like the curse of Sarina
Great work on everything, but wow the hanging knee in place was a really good wonderful job.. thanks Gemma..
Thanks so much! 😊
I subscribe to a few YT videos. Yours is definitely my favourite, including the shed build! Bought the 1944 diaries book recently, a real insight into what the ordinary young men went through in WW11. Haven't got to your part yet, Gemma, but I am looking forward to that section. You both have a brilliant relationship, which is to be admired. I lost my wife after 53 years last April, and we also had a great marriage, travelling all over the world. All the best, and look after each other.
I’m so sorry for your loss, you must miss her greatly x
Well done for the paint. If it works it works.
I had a home Repair business In ARIZONA
All wood rot Starts with Dirt , it Rains fresh water and dirt = Mud
Season to Season = Wood Rot
After repair keep clean and sea water
If it was me , remove the Mud wash clean the In side and out Force inside dry,
Using fans dry the inside with Fans ,
I would Use Fiber Glass at the Back to Stop Wood Rot There on the platform
What do you get when you take dry wood and cover it with Epoxy and set a New ply wood over the Top . Done Fiber glass sandwich and no more water Fiber glass and wood is wonderful .
I remember finding one of those in my Grandfathers tool drawer. I love old tools.
You guys are amazing.
Brace and bit!
Rub wax on the clamp rails to stop epoxy sticking to them.
Tak!
Thank you so much Kim xx
That easy scruffy white paint might be porous which is best for wood. Take care the garage floor paint might seal too well. You don’t want to trap moisture within the timber.
I have a Stanley brace up in my tool chest, bits are the actual drills you fit in the chuck. They are great to undo old screws as you showed. Now you've shown me your I'll have to check on mine. But what is a Bib & Brace.
The previous owner of my boat went onto restore the steel boat Llanthony in Turkey, one day each week was spent checking the hull, mooring lines and engines etc. Getting fuel on board, doing oil & filter changes on the main engines and gennys. I made a point of checking through the hull fittings and turned them off/on, so in an emergency I knew they worked. I know your busy with other work but do spend some time checking what you have done and areas about to do. I do hope the rat has left and you haven't boxed it in.
