Heard this in September 88 in Ibiza when I was 25. Crowd erupted when this came on. Crazy happy times. Nearly 61 now but still never tire of this tune. Pure Classic.
@@mathiaswiese5412 no it wasn't. House had already become popular a couple of years before Inner City appeared on the scene. I'd say Big Fun was probably the song that brought Detroit techno to the UK though. It didn't sound the same as the house that had been charting in tthe couple of years previously.
Late 80s and early 90s house music is one of the best and most innovative genres. It was completely fresh and original. Nothing like that was ever done before then. Kudos to all all producers who managed to make this sound as it was produced yesterday, while a Katy Perry song from a few years ago sounds like ancient history.
I totally disagree. although i grew up in the 90's and always listening early 90's dance music, i have to say that the best era of HOUSE music was 1999-2009. The 00's decade was THE decade of house music and not 90's even more NOT late 80's.
This mega dance hit has stood the test of time, released 1988 30 years ago it just lifts your mood instantly in to party mode, i bought this when was 18 and it still rocks after all this time, pure dance classic.

It is a thing!! I have nostalgia for the 1920s when I’m in a certain vibe .. I do remember it when it came out- The year was 1988 and there was this totally new sound fresh out of Detroit
I accidentally found a record with this track at one of the flea markets in Finland. And only upon arrival home, I fully realized how valuable this find is.
I was 14 and this was why i work all the summer to buy me a 2nd hand synth ... still have it, and .. 40 more .... Thank you Inner City you ruined my bank account for life ;o)
OMG!!! This song is so far ahead of its time it's crazy. If I didn't know the year I could swear it is 1992! A 90's song in 1988. That is what's called a trendsetter!!!
From the creative point of view, not much happened in the 90s (just think that even the Grunge style was born in the 80s with groups like Nirvana) ... especially if compared to the 80s, an incredible decade for creativity and variety of styles (the 90s were musically marked by dance and little else). To give some examples, all these songs were written between 1988 and 1989: Enya - Orinoco Flow (released in 1988) Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance (released in 1988) Soul II Soul - Back To Life (released in 1989) Black Box - Ride on Time (released as a single in 1989) Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam (released in 1989) Double Trouble feat. Rebel MC - Street Tuff (released in 1989) Snap! - The Power which (recorded in 1989 and released in 1990) Black Box - Everybody Everybody (recorded in 1989, released in 1990) Technotronic - Get Up (Before The Night Is Over) (recorderded in 1989, released on 8 January 1990) Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart (performed live in 1989, recorded in 1989, published in 1990) The sound seems to be from the 90s, because in the 90s they continued on this line but the creativity is all from the 80s.
@@MGrimandi Yes but this is not the music one would listen on the radio in 1988. You would probably hear pop rock. And this is not 1989 or 1990, this is 1988, it's really ahead of its time
@@MGrimandi Well explained. But trust me the 90s kids will still make it their songs, 'cause most of those songs were still played in the early 90s. Synths and drum machines were classic 80s. Roland TR909 etc.
It's still a great song. It reminds me of the youth club many moons ago, it was definitely a good place to keep the kids off the streets back in the day... Good times!!
You mention Inner City and so many people think of Good Life. However, IMO this was their best track and such a great start to their musical journey. Me being 17 at the time this was released it was just the right time for me and started me on my rave journey..... and then on into the nineties, nuff said 😁......
I first heard this in Ibiza 88 and instantly knew this was ushering in a new sound for me it was the sound I had been waiting for and I want to thank all who collaborated in producing such joy, I was the first on the dancefloor and didn't care who was watching me ,I didn't need a dove / ecstasy I was gone 😀
Class leading. This tune inspired so many after it. Like Steve silk Hurley it has that Chicago house feel and was seminal. It still sounds so fresh today.

greatest opening 20 second intro ever
try the 12" bro

That 8 second intro/hook is masterful.
