  • Don’t count on Clay Sandford from Leave The World Behind to save the day! Without a working cell phone he’s a useless man and can’t even find the local village.
    But he encounters a Spanish speaking woman, who could have provided useful information.
    Here’s what she told him!
    Fantastic acting from Ethan Hawke (Clay) and Vanessa Aspillage (Salvadora).
    Let me know what you think this scene was about in the comments!

    Excellent job. It's not actually fair that someone who speaks and knows Spanish as well as English can watch this film and understand the perspective of what this woman is going through vs someone who only knows English like the majority of viewers. This should have been subtitled, as this is one of the most important conversations in the film.

    • @Mangolite
      @Mangolite Před 8 měsíci +21

      The filmmaker intentionally omitted the subtitle from the scene to allow viewers who do not speak Spanish to experience the same confusion as Ethan Hawke's character. It was a clever way to put us in his shoes. By the way, I am bilingual, but my mother tongue is Hmong, not Spanish.

    • @hereandthereIam
      @hereandthereIam Před 8 měsíci +3

      I agree with the previous comment. I'm sure it was 100% intentional. Knowing a language or two apart from your native one is hell of a skill during an emergency like that. Just like any other skill or possession - a bunker, a gun, knowing how to grow vegetables, etc. If he'd known Spanish, things might have gone differently. We don't know how exactly but still

    • @Mangolite
      @Mangolite Před 8 měsíci

      European languages share a common vocabulary system that includes loan words or cognates. These words are pronounced slightly differently but have the same meaning, such as metro, hospital, idea, escape, lava, visa, sociable, inevitable, funeral, original, cereal, horrible, and motor. Spanish cognates are a great example of this. Some Spanish words change -tion to -ción, such as action - acción, celebration - celebración, condition - condición, nation - nación, and fiction - ficción.
      You can also pick up the general meaning of what someone is saying by listening to them. The Hmong language has words derived from all the countries it has entered. For example, "punyoh" comes from China and means friend, while "hawn nam" comes from Laos and Thailand and means restroom, and so on. The English word second borrowed from Old French second, seond, from Latin secundus which missionaries spread over the world to where the Hmong word deveritive of it is ib xi nkoos (one segum/one second).

    Just warning you guys, this movue uses something called predictive programming...remember the movie "white noise" it came out last year in February,
    it was some weird random movie just like this one...in white noise a train derails and creates a chemical cloud that then causes chaos in the movie and the movie was really all over the place and seemingly had no plot
    BUT the kicker is that 3 months after the movie was released on netflix an actual train derailment happened in east palestine, ohio which lead to a huge chemical fire and the residents of the town evacuating
    Now do me a favor and Google where the movie "white noise" was based on!
    Thats right, north east ohio where many east palestine residents worked as extras in the movie...mind you the movie was filmed in 2021
    Tell me your thoughts, and please dont just say its a coincidence

      The film was released in November 2022 and the real train derail in east palestine Ohio happened in February of 2023...so was it just a coincidence? Out of 109,000 cities in America the film makers coincidentally used the same city it was gonna happen in!
