- This worship piano improv was a suggestion by Arianna [another wonderful piano teacher] and I absolutely loved listening to it yesterday and then leaping right into some piano improvising and recording it!
Here's "Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me" and I listened to the CityAlight version that I will link below as well.
The lyrics in this one are so thought provoking and faith filled.
I really loved the line,
"The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side, the Savior he will stay."

Often when I am improvising, I think of the words and ways that I can add subtle musical ideas that reflect them.
Sometimes it's just dynamic shifts, other times I might play in different octaves or with different textures depending on what I am feeling in the lyrics.
If I am playing with a singer, I will try not to double the voice line [unless I hear they need support], but if playing on my own, I usually add the melody, but sometimes take little detours on purpose or if I get distracted that's bound to happen to.
I played this one in C major and it's a terrific one to explore for worship style pianists on your own or along students.
There are many ways to explore improvising at the piano and I feel like I always have so much to learn.
