E08 Ecologically Sensitive Areas of the Western Ghats | The Sunita Narain show

- The Western Ghats are a vital ecological corridor in India. However, due to rapid urbanization, deforestation, and climate change, this region is under severe threat.
The Kasturirangan Committee Report highlighted the need for stringent conservation measures to protect the Western Ghats as it is declared as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA).
The report emphasized the ecological sensitivity of the region and recommended a ban on certain developmental activities in specific areas. This would help preserve the biodiversity and prevent landslides, similar to the devastating ones witnessed in Wayanad, Kerala.
If the Western Ghats are not adequately conserved, we can expect more frequent and severe landslides in the future. This will not only lead to loss of human life and property but also have a significant impact on the region's biodiversity. Protecting the Western Ghats is crucial for the ecological balance of South India and the well-being of its inhabitants.

Worth taking notes for UPSC ✍ Thank you so much maam. ❤ Unique and very important content. 👏👌 🙏👍
Well said mam, we cannot do conservation without making local people collaborators; putting money in the hands of the community and allay their (sometimes very real) fears and building a forest-based economy.
I guess the notion of development and better tomorrow has set into motion forces that cannot be stopped. Its like a huge rock that was rolled down the hill, and will only stop once it crashes. I can relate to the passionate message that Sunita mam is trying to convey, as I try to do the same with the people around me, but unfortunately 80-90% of the people dont care.
You are absolutely correct Mam. We have a model of conservation where people were taken along in Panna Tiger Revival which is known as "Jan Samarthan se Bagh Samrakshan" - Tiger Conservation with People's Support.
Respected madam,

there are few quarrying area in Karnataka western ghats (Uttara Kannada district) in areas where landslide happens on regular interval. There will many more which will pop up soon. How do you stop this?
Well said Maam👏 this is an eye opener....
thank you DTE team to these insights
Thank you for this insightful explainer.
Knowing all these thing makes me feel sad that why we are not protecting things which actually exist and can be kept alive even if small effort from each community contributes .
even mam gadgil committee had said to declared that area ESA previously to kasturi ranjan report but government egnor it .....and i m so socked to learn that explosive were used for minnig this types of human interference lead this situation and lack of government on time steps too ....climate chnge is huge matter of concern...now a days sustainablity is just a word used on paper only......
Being for. The region, now I fully understand what it is.
Maam plz cover mega dam that is purpose in siang river at upper siang Arunachal Pradesh. We native don’t want such big dam which is not ecological sustainable for us .Here rainfall intensity is increasing year by year plus it is highly earthquake prone zone and landslides is very common which not good for the downstream in the future
At this point we need a list of places that are not ecologically sensitive
Kerala govt to help the communities earn livelihood should start nature trails ,agri tourism , village tourism following sustainable tourism principles including zero waste green energy and optimum use of water in these ecologically sensitive areas.High Quality Low Volume Tourism so they stop quarrying work for livelihood
Madam, does it mean that only landuse change is the way to management of the western ghats ? 🙏
Thnx mam

Sir district magistrate ke pass jao ya nearby ngo dekho Jo kuch madat kare.
For the political benefits government change the rules and this happens
😢
The Mundakkai landslide started 2km inside forest. Nearest quarry is more than 10km away from landslide area. The landslide incident is due to heavy rain (due to climate change) only.
