"I'm happy to see Sand Land get a second wind with an open-world action game, and it can sometimes adapt the series in impressive ways. But while there is the potential of an interesting expansion of the manga here, it doesn’t manage to replicate what Toriyama's panels were able to illustrate so effectively. Beneath some ho-hum dialogue and stilted cutscenes is a fun story with its heart in the right place, and Beelzebub and friends at least have the charisma to carry you through to the end alongside a quirky set of supporting characters and villains. Dialing in on vehicular combat and exploration pays off to both maintain the spirit of the original work and deliver some high points, but the quests themselves fall into repetition. Thus, Sand Land suffers the same fate we’ve seen in many other game adaptations of anime and manga - competent in several respects with a few moments of brilliance, but for the most part, a simply okay adventure that can only occasionally capture what makes the source material special."

IGN, where a game is praised throughout the review but gets a 6 and a game like Madden that gets a lot of excuses and “headed in the right direction” for 10 years in a row gets a 8. Make it make sense
IGN comment sections where someone has played neither game but complains about the scores of both games they haven't played.

My buddy bought this today and he’s still playing it six hours later.
Anytime IGN gives a game a low score....i play it regardless 🤣. The games they give high scores are typically boring.

The criticism is not that the reviewer's openion differs from our expectations, it's that the reviewer's verdict disagrees with their own review's body. The criticism in the body seems to be mostly about smaller aspects such as dialogs and cutscenes, which are not unimportant, but usually don't tank a game with solid gameplay, feel, characters, and world building to an "Okay" verdict.
He clearly said that the enemy AI, battle design, and non-vehicle fights were all poorly executed.
So you didn't actually listen to what he said throughout the video??
Sand land didn't donate or sponsor them like games with 8+ score

From someone completely unfamiliar with the series, this seems like a very fair review.
Sad that the reviewer and some folks in the comments found it boring. Was worried about that from the trailers but still looked like it had the potential to be exciting. I'll have give the demo a try at least.
Only thing that is sad is this reviewer aka urinalist!
the demo doesnt do this game justice at all, and lacks a sense of direction.
ILCA did this game. They made One Piece Odyssey and the Pokemon Gen 4 remakes. It's a mixed reception from them lately.

The world looks incredible. Love the art direction.
Just remember there just review scores...youll find 10 9 8 7 6s..for everything....find a independent reviewer that shares your tastes and go by that if it matters that much
You could also judge the review by it's content, not just the number at the end.
If you're going to find a review to confirm what you already want it to be, you should just stop bothering with reviews if you're so biased.

It's IGN and all but having played the game now; he isn't wrong. The game's barely 20 gigs because they use generic animations for most of the cutscenes instead of making unique ones to capture the essence of the shots of the manga panels.
It looked incredible, but downloaded the demo was more fun than actually playing it.

The story is the same as the Anime, Manga + Forest Land, with filler.
Dang it oh well at least we have the anime on hulu (and/or disney plus) I'm trying to get people to be aware the anime exists

You should've looked in the comments no one was upset about the score, and yes the game looks too boring if you have to fight melee when you have vehicles and vice versa

@@princexrocco38 Steam reviews aren't exactly the best way to judge a games quality. If you look into it now, a ton of them are marked positive because of the involvement of Toriyama, but they haven't actually spent any time playing the game yet...
After playing the demo and the initial trailers, I'm not surprised. A shame though.
