not sure... people are growing increasingly stupid nowadays... the covid hysteria and the wokeness are the most obvious signs. This will probably be trashed as white supremacist material along with Bach, Couperin, Frescobaldi, Scarlatti, Biber, Rameau, etc.

It's because he died early that he became a myth, not because he died early but because of the songs he wrote. This is; he wrote not from his head but from his heart. That's what makes us remember him, because his songs are so beautiful,

Yes, Purcell is the greatest - but two other young English composers who were full of talent:
Pelham Humphreys: A contemporary of Purcell (1647-1674). Wrote some superb verse anthems for the Chapel Royal (look for "O Lord my God").
Thomas Linley (1756-1778): Considered an equal by Mozart, died in a tragic boating accident at the age of 22, leaving behind some very fine music indeed.

So much harmony and balance! I guess it's because of the form of imitative counterpoint he used...the absolute
    beauty!

    • @excelsior999
      @excelsior999 Před 9 měsíci

Although there is clearly Harmony and Balance in Purcell's music, I would argue that there is more to it than Imitative Counterpoint, which is very prevalent in most Baroque music.
While some artists can be ahead their Time and others Behind the Times, generally speaking, most artists (even exceptional ones such as Purcell) are, perforce, Of their Time. Consequently the Art which they create for the most part reflects the Weltanschauung of the period in which they lived.
Although the daily life for the average person in Purcell's Time was very difficult and challenging by today's standards, in a larger sense I believe that it was a Time of Harmony and Balance - at least compared to what we are experiencing at present.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509

Totally different style from a totally different age; the early English Baroque of Purcell comes from a different musical planet to that of the Mozart/Haydn Viennese Classical style of a hundred years later.
Haydn in particular *did* write a number of symphonies and string quartets starting with adagio movements; they in the sonata da chiesa form - basically slow/fast/slow/fast.
      Check out:
      Symphonies
      5
      11
      12
      21
      22
      30
      34
      49*
      String quartets
      Opus 1 No 3
      Opus 2 No 6
      Opus 9 No 5
      Opus 17 No 3
      Opus 42 (a single quartet)
      Opus 55 No 2
Opus 71 No 2 (slow introduction only).
Additionally, 9 of the earlier quartets up to and including Opus 20 begin with very gently paced Moderato movements.
      * Symphony 49 in f minor (‘La passione’) is unquestionably the greatest symphony of the 18th century beginning with an entire slow movement, and one of the greatest of all sturm und drang symphonies.
