  • Following a mainsail-destroying capsize (or two) in episode 6, I am lucky enough to get my hands on the prototype square top mainsail, similar to what most of the fleet is now running. I tune the mast to get the most out of this new sail, then head out in a tricky offshore breeze to see how it goes on the race track, before a series of unfortunate setup and boat handling issues send me back through the fleet!
    Or, as ChatGPT puts it:
    After enduring a couple of mainsail-destroying capsizes in episode 6, luck smiles upon me as I secure the prototype square top mainsail-a choice favored by many in the fleet. Witness my meticulous mast tuning to extract optimal performance from this cutting-edge sail. Venturing into a challenging offshore breeze, I hit the race track to gauge its prowess. However, a series of unfortunate setup and boat handling issues force me to navigate my way back through the fleet. Join me in this riveting episode as I delve into the dynamics of the prototype square top mainsail and tackle the challenges of the racecourse. From capsizes to mast tuning, offshore sailing, and boat handling, this video covers a spectrum of sailing experiences. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and stay tuned for more thrilling sailing content!"

    To prevent the Halyard get stuck on on the wire where the Boatbreaker attaches we use 1.5m PVC pipe to cover the bottom area of the stay. Als helps a bit when you capsize so the kite may unwrap itself if it wraps itself around the stay while pull it back in.

      @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, I decided to leave the bit of PVC pipe in the car and just tape it, I couldn’t bring myself to have a big round tube up the front! In hindsight the drag would have been worth it to stop the kite getting stuck!

    Hi Tom, did see your solution for the boatbreaker-attachment there. Dunno if you know or not (first time seeing your channel), but here in Europe, we use a plastic tube for that. Close to a centimeter in diameter, about a meter in length, with a bit of bycicle tube at the lower end of it, which goes over the pegboard(?). Some people tape it, but I have found that a bit of bungie around the pegboard (and the bycicle tube) holds it perfectly in place and is no waste of tape every time you sail.

      Thanks for the comment, the boat did come with a piece of PVC tube but it was about 1 inch in diameter and a metre long, and given how draggy round tubes are I decided to leave it in the car, Although looking back I probably should have put it on to avoid the issues I had!

    Was intersting to hear your thoughts on the new sail... I like the idea the boat doesn't get stuck in irons as much but being a bit light (75kg) not sure I need the extra power...

    • @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr
      @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr  Před 7 měsíci

      I think most of the extra power was from the changes I made to the rig settings, and from having a sail that wasn’t 15 years old. I assume that the mast can be tuned to get rid of power just as easily 😉

      @@TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr For more powerful read more efficient. It's a way better shape, there hasn't been an increase in sail area it's literally been moved and the shape has been modified to better match the mast profile.
      I sailed yesterday with my old shape main against a new shape in 5-10kts breeze and the difference was significant, especially when the breeze dropped, while I was having to mess with controls to keep the leech open and therefore not really concentrating, the new sail was opening up nicely still and was higher and faster. When the breeze is up (Haven't used the production one yet but sailed a lot with the UK prototype) it is way better at reacting to the breeze so I think for the lighter guys it will be easier to depower and as Tom says in the video it's easier to hold the groove.
      Great videos Tom

    I'm really enjoying your series. I am considering trying to find a MPS, but as there aren't many here in the US I think it would be mostly for just ripping around and having fun! Thanks.

    Would love to know what xamera youre using and what editing software. The footage is super nice especially being 50fps

      @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I’m using the DJI Action 4 camera, then I edit it on Davinci (which is free). The camera has good stabilisation, although some of the settings are a bit of overkill for sailing and end up cropping way too much of the scene (but would be good for other sports). Unfortunately even with a decent camera and software it still takes about 6-8 hours (minimum) to edit each episode!

    New main looks glamour, are you allowed to heel tune/ put chocks in the mast step in the musto skiffs?

    • @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr
      @TomStuchberySailing-eg9vr  Před 7 měsíci +1

      That’s a good question, I didn’t hear anyone talk about putting chocks in. The mast step is very similar to a 29er/49er type setup
