  • Father Robert Barnes talks with the Arlington Catholic Herald about life at the Trappist monastery in Berryville, Va. The monastery is home to brothers who live a life of prayer and work according to the Rule of Saint Benedict. The men act as stewards of their 1200 acre property and invite everyone to visit the monastery for prayer and spiritual renewal in the Shenandoah valley. I stayed at this monastery (Holy Cross Abbey) a number of times in college between 2001 and 2004. These monks and their habits of prayer are a significant reason I was received into the Catholic Church.

The Anxious Catholic Perhaps you should follow the Calling. I was surrounded by Nuns as a young girl. my parents sent me to a private. convent school. And the Nuns helped me through my life. Its a beautiful life. Of peace and dedication to the Lord

The Anxious Catholic No, not a sign from God. I've seen distressing numbers of people get into strife by thinking God speaks through such external coincidences. Make a decision based on wisdom, discernment, the honest appraisal of your relationship with God, and the characteristics of a Godly life as provided to us in the Bible, and the Spirit's personal guidance to you in such things.
I grieve the use of the perceived obligation to fall into line behind "coincidence". At times it's little more than a cheap manipulative tool, and not at all like the deeply loving overwhelming personal approach that God makes to us.

"Many are called ; few chosen." I think many fight the calling, at first? A battle can rage within. Not all are called to that life, and discernment is needed. But we can all live life for God in various ways. Including being married. We all know this. But we are distracted with worldly things often if not careful. If the Lord wants you, then it happens, one way or another.
Have to tell a quick funny story! When only 16 yrs old, I was trying out for "Miss Teen age America" first person in my small village area ever ! My boyfriend was home from being in the Navy and took me to the big city and dripped me off at a place we thought was the right place! I walked up the stairs ( Never really used to city life at all, always lived in small village) A nice woman comes to door and I explained where I thought I was and why. ( I had passed a preliminary part of the testing for the Miss Teen, and this was the talent part on this day) The nice woman went and had to get someone. It was a PRIEST!! I was at the Parish.. and a bible study for young people was taking place.. The Priest was wonderful to me, and allowed me to" wait there until my boyfriend would come back" He would come to check on me. ( I was thinking all the time " Is God talking to me, why did this happen and yet am lucky that I am here! TY Lord for that , but I am now late for my Talent part of my important contest.. Now I will be finished") Finally he came and got me! Father said " Make sure your boyfriend does not leave you anyplace alone again" I said " I will not Father, and ....he will know "
Tried to tell the people practicing " What happened to me on my way" but no one cared and said " GET IN LINE" I did end up being one of 50 out of 300 at end of the whole contest! Actually not bad as many tried out a few times before wining. I gave up, after that one time.
Married the boyfriend of that time, ( he did not really want me to win though anyway) and now married almost 49 years and my life though, has been turned to Jesus! I do feel still this call... to Him!
Yes, the Lord was talking to me! I often think of this, and how our Lord has, a sense of humor too.. He must truly laugh at us sometimes. He keeps us safe but tries to show us what is wrong with our direction , if we want to hear Him.
Sorry this is long, but had to share.. We can be called... and not understand. But I have turned it around in many ways, and made my life a life for our Lord even while working over the years, as a nurse. I now plan to be Catholic, as have been Protestant ( find such solace in praying the rosary and really just know it is right) and with it though over the years , was ordained a minister. But know I must turn to Catholic and have felt it for years. ( I am hard to get through to sometimes and our Lord knows...)
**My mom was Protestant and Dad Catholic , and so was divided. Should have known the Lord had ideas, as when only a young child, on Wed the Catholic Church on my street, had services, and I would ask my dad ( as he watched my brother and I in evenings as mom worked and he worked days) If I could go and he would say "yes" and so I had to put a hat on ( as they did then) and went. and LOVED IT. The nuns got to know me well, and the ushers ushered me to sit in back pew. **
Hope this may help someone who happens here, to know our Lord may have his eyes on you, and you may not be listening and seeing the signs? Pay close attention. But if you miss the signs, remember you still can give your life to Him....

    Worship . . .
Lite two candles and sweet incense . . .
In Jesus name I Create a Sacred Space . . .a Holy place to Worship the Lord . . .
    ....
O Lord, hear my prayers, and let my cry come unto thee . . .O Lord God Almighty, who has reigned before the beginning of the Ages, and who by thine infinite wisdom, hast created the heavens, the earth, and the sea, and all thats in them is, all that is visible, and all that is invisible by a single word; I praise thee, I bless thee, I adore, thee, I glorify, thee, and I pray thee now at the present time to be merciful unto me, a miserable sinner, for I am the Work of Thine Hands . . .
    . . .
Gracious God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Forgive us and give us strength to turn from sin and to serve you in newness of life . . .
    . . .
Save me, and direct me by Thy Holy Name, Thou to Whom nothing is difficult, nothing is impossible, and deliver me from the night of mine ignorance, and enable me to go forth there from. Enlighten me with spark of Thine Infinite Wisdom. Take away from my senses the desire of my flesh, that I can walk up right before your divine presents . . .
    . . .
O God the father, All Powerful and All Merciful, Who hast created all things, Who knowest and conceivest them universally, and to Whom nothing is hidden, nothing is impossible; I entreat Thy Grace for me and Thy servants, the Brothers and Sisters of this Order . . .Come Lord and make us Soul Winners, Help us now to Create a proper Space a Holy Place that we can worship you our Lord . . .in the Mighty and Wonderful name Jesus the Christ!
    . . .
When we enter here in with all humility, let God the Almighty One enter into this Circle, by the entrance of an eternal happiness, of Divine prosperity, of a perfect joy, of an abundant charity, and of an eternal salutation . . .O Lord our God Sanctify our humble entery here in; Thou the Blessed and Holy One of the Eternal! Ages . . .in the Blessed name of Jesus the Christ . . .
    . . .
O Lord God, All Powerful and All Merciful, Thou who desirest not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live: Give and grant unto us thy grace, by blessing and consecrating this Sacred Space . . . I beseeh Thee, O Lord God, the All Powerful and the All Merciful, that Thou wilt design to bless this Circle, and all those who are there in, in the Blessed and Mighty name of Jesus the Christ . . .
    . . .
    Amen!
.Hail Jesus the Christ, God Son, my Savior, Have Mercy Upon me a Sinner!
    I Glorify you God . . .only you I worship . . .!
THERE IS NO OTHER God but Jehovah . . .
King of Kings and Lord of Lords . . .
There is no other name where for you much be Saved . . .Jesus the Christ, Logos of God! Amen . . .
    ...
All... to be, to exist, to come to pass!
    ...
The Minister ask some one to open with a prayer from the Heart without any written litany . . .
At this time spontaneous worship takes place. Everyone worshipping out loud from the heart in charismatic release, arms and hands up lifted in a sign of surrender. Singing in the Spirit taking place. Everyone surrendering to the Spirit of God. This time of worship should not be rushed, or hurried . . .there could be a tongue and interpretation, a prophecy.
    MINISTER . . .Friar
    Hear the good news:
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God's love towards us. In the name of Jesus the Christ and his shed blood, you are forgiven!
    All . . .Brothers
IN the name of Jesus the Christ and his shed blood, we are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen
    Minister . . .Friar
LET'S us offer one another signs of reconciliation and love.
Everyone shakes hands and greets each other.
    Minister. . . .Friar
All honor and glory is yours, almighty God now and forever.
    All . . .Brothers
    Amen!
    Minister . . .Friar
    The Lord be with you.
    All . . .Brothers
    And also with you.
    Minister. . . .Friar
    Lift up your hearts.
    All . . .Brothers
We lift them up to the Lord.
    Minister . . .Friar
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
    All . . .Brothers
It's is right to give our thanks and praise.
    Minister. . .Friar
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name.
    All . . .Brothers
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
    Minister. . . .Friar
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus the Christ, we offer our self's as holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
    All...Brothers
Christ had died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!
    Minister. . . .Friar
All honor and glory is yours, almighty God now and forever.
    All . . .Brothers
    Amen, Amen, Amen . . .
    ...
The Minister takes a few drops of water and adds it to a small cup of anointing oil. The Minister holds up the cup and prays a blessing over it...
    The Minister...
    James 5:14-16
14 Anyone who is sick should call the church's elders. They should pray for and anoint with oil the person in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer that is said with faith will heal that person, well; the Lord the will heal that person. And if the person. Has sinned, the sins will be forgiven. 16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you. When a believing person prays, great things happen.
The Minister anoints each brother in the name of the Lord on the forehead in the sign of the Tau cross...
Each brother praying silently to themselves confessing there sins to God and asking for, forgiveness....1John 1:9
Anyone sick after everyone is anointed raises there hand up and others lay hands on them and silently praise for there healing.
Other needs can also be prayed for.
If there is someone that is not filled with the Holy Ghost they can ask at this time to have hands laid on them to be.
If there are prayer requests that have been written out on parchment paper ( flash paper) the parchment should be held up. The Minister should now ask a brother to pray for these prayers to be met...
Now the parchment paper with the prays are burned in the thurible...with incense added to the charcoal....
    ...
" Friars Eu·cha·rist". . .come and eat the Masters calling...
    Exodus 12:13 and 21-22
    13. The Blood will be a sign for you on the house where you are; and when I see the blood I will pass over you.
    21. Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover Lamb. 22. Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe.
    All . . .
    Hebrews 9:22
    22. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and with out the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin.
    Minister. . .
    1 Corinthians 11:23-25
The Minister picks up the paten with the Bread saying...
    23. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said.
"This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me"
The paten is pass clockwise round the circle. Each person brakes off a piece of the bread, eating it in remembrance of what Christ did for them on the cross.
The Minister picks up the Chalice and says...
" This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
The Chalice is passed clockwise round the circle each person drinking from it in remembrance of the shed blood of Christ.
Once again the Chalice and Paten are back on the altar spontaneous praise and worship takes place thanking the Lord for his shed blood and the forgiveness of there sin(s).
This part of the Eu·cha·rist is not rushed, a time of just being still takes place. . .
A tongue and interpretation or prophecy could happen ...we want to be open to the Holy Spirit. So we at times just wait on the Lord.
    ...
    All...
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, that your ways may be known on the earth, your Salvation among all nations.
May the people praise you, O God; may all the people praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the people justly and guide the nations of the earth.
May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the people praise you.
Then the Lord will yield it's harvest, and God, our God, will bless us. God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear him.
    Minister...
    The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you; and give you peace...
    All ...
    Amen!

Benedictines are vegetarians, not all are vegan. The Rule of St. Benedict forbids monks from eating any critters that walk around on hooves, but I'm thinking it is more because meat from cattle, sheep and hogs would have been viewed as a luxury, and luxuries are spurned by monks. It does allow, however, for those who are ill to eat meat to aid in their recovery. So it is not totally forbidden. Fish and poultry are acceptable, however.
That said, I do believe Trappist/Cistercians - a very strict order of Benedictines - do follow a vegan diet for the most part. So the cattle originally raised by the monks at the monastery would have been for sale to support the monastery, not for their own consumption.
