Good exercise with the Scythe/slasher especially when blunt lol dropped many a dock, thistle & nettle. Long handle Scythe come in very handy when hedge laying along with a billhook too. Just shows the damage Aphids do to plants a no1 disease vector
Wildflowers mix look nice & yes nature is like a predator it takes over wiping out whatever is in its path & very important its managed to strike a balance. Some people don’t understand that & wrongly think just leaving things is more beneficial when its actually not.
Orchard Ermine Yponomeuta padella after seeing the pupa, (we have 4 species of Ermine in the UK). the silk webbing protects them from the birds and other predators. They will strip a hedge but it recovers & no lasting damage.
Like the processionary moth the ermine caterpillar can cause serious irritation and breathing problems due to the fine hairs.
Enjoy the Highland Show. a great event . The Farm manager will love it . make sure your check book is out of sight lol..

Great video as always i also Googled about you're hedge
Hedge plants are a favourite food for the caterpillars of the moth or ermine. The caterpillars eat the plant as they molt and turn into adults, and then fly off to lay their eggs on other hedge plants.

Years ago we had a cow that would find the bull thistles that were flowering, and she would curl her lips back and snip off just the flower buds and eat them. We figured she thought that they were some kinds of candy. Actually, the flowers and flower pods are quite sweet and sugary. I've even heard of some people harvesting the flowers to make some kind of wine.

it looks like farmer p could be right with the Small ermine moth but there are so many that eat haw thorn it is hard to know as you say it is best to find the t caterpillar. some of them can be harmful like the Tent caterpillar that has urticating (irritant) hairs on its body can cause breathing difficulties and rashes in contact with human skin. and the rashes can last for months. you could take some of them and put them in a tub and see what hatched

In central Illinois we call those ' bag worms'. There are 100's or more specific species and maybe Farmer P or someone he knows can be more specific. There are sprays available be not sure if they are available in the UK. Untreated over time they will get out of hand and kill a hedge. Good luck.

White and black stripes looks like a caterpillar they love to eat trees and do you wanna save your trees? You better just burn them off right now it looks like it might be babies. They’re gonna be hatch and you’re gonna have 10 times more down on your farm killing your trees. I can remember when I was a kid, we used to get them in our yard in our trees. My dad used to burn them off because they’re gonna kill your trees if you don’t.
