      @@zburnreefing FWIW - I totally agree with the guy above. I'd even be in favor of more "vlog-style" posts about really anything. A lot of CZcamsrs seem to do monthly tank updates this way, showing coral growth or talking about fish behavior, etc. You're among my favorite CZcamsrs in the hobby, it's just purely enjoyable for me to watch your journey, and I could care less if you've got a super specific topic or whatever. Figured I'd throw in my two cents, for whatever it's worth to you.

    Hello. I just came across your channel today. I have already watched a few postings. I am very impressed with your corals & tank set up. Hopefully soon I will be upgrading to a peninsula style tank soon. I've already gotten approval from the boss for the upgrade :). I currently have a 35 gallon cube Mixed reef & a 20 gallon Softie / Macro display. The two tanks are plumbed into the same sump. So I guess you can say I am out growing my current system but its working great for now. Keeps me happy. I enjoy your videos looking forward to watching some more.

      Thanks for checking out a few of my videos and for the encouraging feedback! Good luck on your new build in the future (and keeping the peace with your boss 😀). That is cool you have plumbed together two tanks into a single sump/system. I am thinking of doing the same for a frag tank in 6-12 months once I have something to frag, lol.

    It’s generally better to have your skimmer in the first section of the sump. And the refugium in the second chamber, that way you’re not sucking up /killing pods and other critters. Therefore sending them straight up to the display.

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Fair observation. However, there is no shortage of pods in the display. With time, all works itself out. I personally like the fuge first as I get two barriers of protection from junk making it into my return pump section vs just one. My goal is to keep that section the cleanest and free of debris so the return runs optimally and I can go longer between cleanings.

    Thanks for the video. I’m currently setting up a Reefer 250 that I purchased second hand. I’m dealing with the same issues. What’s up with the sock holders 🤷‍♂️. I thought maybe it was because I didn’t purchase Red Sea socks. But your saying you have Red Sea socks ? I was thinking about looking into a 3D printed sock holder that I could swap out. Also, I cut the drain valve out and installed a gate valve. Seems to be much better but I just got it up and running. All in all, I really like the tank. Yea, my socks are Red Sea socks and they still don’t fit well without a lot of force! I am tempted to try the gate valve mod but read about others doing it and it still didn’t solve the fluctuations in the overflow from happening. Curious how it will work for you…I’m definitely tempted. That down flow valve is definitely a huge design flaw. Other than that, I am liking the tank! Good luck with your build - fun stuff for sure!

    Dose Kalkwasser instead of ionic A and B and it will stabilize your PH. Your coral will grow like Weeds as well. The bigger plus is its way cheaper.

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před 7 měsíci

      I took kalk offline not too long ago. I observed a few coral issues that correlated with the timing I brought kalkwasser online. Can’t say for sure if it was the kalk that caused my issues…maybe I had a bad batch, or brought it online too fast causing phosphate to precipitate…I may give it another go soon. Things have stabilized again.

    • @Nothin638
      @Nothin638 Před 7 měsíci

      @zburnreefing I had a lot of luck with it stabilizing my PH. I dosed it often in very small amounts. I've used calcium reactors and ionic A and B, but out of the three, I loved the Kalkwasser the most. It took me a long time to want to do it because of all the horror stories of guys nuking their tanks. I guess it's all about the setup. It seems like those stories were usually people set up on the drip. I used parastalic pumps like you have. It feels pretty bomb proof that way. Anyway, I've been out of it for a few years, so it was nice to see your setup. I may have to jump back in. Great job, your setup and aqua scape looked top-notch!!

      I run a reef mat 500 on my Reefer 170 right now and I absolutely love it. I travel for work so not having to worry about the socks is awesome. The only thing difficult about it was squeezing myself into the stand to install it. All I ever have to do to it is switch out the roll every 3ish months which is pretty simple once you get it down. I can’t recommend one enough and I probably will never have another tank without one.

    Id recomend a flow meter and to optimized the UV, you can also use it to turn off the UV if the pump fails etc, to the UV wont damage the seals etc with no water to cool/shield it which will then leak etc. Running 2 returns and or having UV return to the tank would help with redundancy, did you have a heater controller I may have missed that. I have a Sicce 3.0 and 2.0 returns and Sicce 3.0 SDC doing about 100gph as a third return

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před rokem +1

      Great ideas - I definitely still need to improve areas of redundancy. Investment is getting up there. For heater control I am using an INKBIRD but have it plugged in to the apex just in case I need to shut it down or it fails and heaters get stuck on. For now I do have the UV and the UV pump on the same circuit…if the pump fails I want the bulb to fail as well to prevent overheating. However, this is not a great long term solution and need to do what you suggest (i.e., flow meter).

    • @gregdepot
      @gregdepot Před rokem

      @@zburnreefing I’m debating on moving over the inkbirds to the apex, I have had an apex brain fail, so everything on the apex has its own risks. I currently have 2 inkbirds each with their own brs 300, I dont have room for eheim.
      But if one inkbird fails the second inkbird, apex, sicce 3.0 SDC should all be giving me temp warnings to my phone and the second inkbird an alarm also. I also have a temp controlled fan attached to the apex. Im just scared to put everything on the apex since it then becomes a single point of failure.
      But yes not sure there is a right answer short of running 2 Apex’s but that seems extreme. Maybe ill do one attached to the apex and one not.

    Question, shouldn't your refugium compartment and protein skimmer compartment be switched? The water flow in your setup is such that your skimmer will suck up all the beneficial pods from your refugium.

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi there, great observation. Yes, you could easily swap the fuge and skimmer. I like the skimmer in the back as I enjoy viewing the fuge at night and watching the life down there. I’m sure the skimmer causes some issues to some of the pods, similarly as my return pump. Hasn’t been detrimental though as I see tons of pods in display when lights are out.

    I appreciate the video. Could you swap the skimmer and refugium sections, or does the water level or something else prevent that? Also, did you need an adapter (i.e., metric to US standard) to connect the Cor 15 to the red sea return line?

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před rokem +1

      You could swap skimmer and fuge section without issue. I chose to put the fuge first thinking less junk would make it into the return section that way, but with the sponge section probably wouldn’t have been a big deal. The cor 15 isn’t hard plumbed to the stock Red Sea return plumbing. Just using flex hose and barbed ends with nylon clips. Hard plumbing is definitely a future goal of mine.

    Nicely done bro. Do you think the pump level in the return chamber could be an issue with flow coming into the sump?

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před rokem

      I don’t think so…I did some tests thinking maybe they sponge section right before the return was restricting flow as time passed but didn’t seem to be the case. The main issue is after adjusting the down flow valve (which controls how quiet overflow is) it doesn’t stay consistent and eventually (1-2 days) will start drifting, where water goes higher and over the emergency drain (which causes ato to kick on more) or it starts to drift the other way and then you have too much water in the return and the ato alarm goes off. Maybe my pumps are not consistent enough, I don’t know…or the down flow valve is getting dirty easily causing fluctuations. Very annoying to have to adjust the valve every day to prevent salinity changes…hard to go on vacation.

    • @ethanguerami1162
      @ethanguerami1162 Před rokem

      @@zburnreefing I see. You probably tried this but going a little higher power and having the the emergency overflow doing a small trickle would be an option to test. I'd remove that sponge if you haven't already to see, remove all possible areas that could clog up and then see how it goes.

    • @zburnreefing
      @zburnreefing  Před rokem

      @@ethanguerami1162 that is what I am working on right now…tuning valve to have a slight trickle over into the secondary. I think that is my only option at the moment.
