RMS Queen Mary (part 1 of 2) feat. Fox Star Line

- Cunard Line's RMS Queen Mary was the company's entry into the new generation of flagship ocean liners. She was traditional, but massive and fast, having quickly earned the Blue Riband upon entry into commercial transatlantic service. Along with her running mate, Queen Elizabeth, she would carry a large percentage of the world's transatlantic passenger traffic traveling between Southampton and New York. This video is part 1 of 2 on the Queen Mary.
This video features Kipfer Fox of The Fox Star Line Facebook group. A special thanks to Fox Star Line for researching the interiors of Queen Mary and appearing in this video! Join the Fox Star Line Facebook group: / foxstarline

Shame the fox dude was using a 7 month old toothbrush as a microphone
Sounds like a 12 year old kid with a lisp.
@@TheJimbob1603 didn't really want to make fun of the guy at a personal level, he just needs a microphone
The best of radio shack
I was also really disappointed by the microphone quality
VERY difficult to listen to. No need to ever have him on again.
Cunard: "We can finally have weekly trans-Atlantic service!"
History: "Not so fast..."
Cunard: Time to start weekly services.
Germany: Time to invade France.
@@hart-of-gold lol Poland to be exact

For those criticizing Kipfer on this video: man just appreciate the knowledge the guy shared with us all. He recorded with his cell phone and he has a lot of issues to deal every single day. Please apreciate the knowledge and be nice. Because he is a great guy
Thanks, Luis. Totally agree. The information Kipfer Fox provided in this video was very valuable. A lot of these details would have been left out of the video without his efforts. If anything, the audio quality is my fault. In future collaborations, I will be sure to provide the proper equipment.
@Luis Gustavo Ferreira. I should've taken the trouble to read your post earlier: I was one of the critics.
@@TheGreatBigMove Just to let you know: I apologise and I've taken down my original post in view of what Luis has written: I should've spotted it earlier. My fault entirely, but it doesn't help with YT (Google) subsuming comments, unlike the old days when it was all clear for us to see in chronological order on the 'front page'.
It's not the equipment it's the guys voice. It's super nasally and hard to listen to. I love all the videos I've watched on this channel but I had to stop this one because I could not stand that voice. I appreciate the information he was sharing and the research that went into it and I don't want to personally insult the guy but as a narrator his voice doesn't work so well. There's a good reason nature documentaries dont hire Gilbert Gottfried as their narrator.
Imagine if Olympic and queen mary were preserved side by side...
Olympic was such a huge loss... she was old when the depression hit and very outdated. They should have converted her to a hotel and only allow guests to stay in rooms that did have private bathrooms.
@@johnboy4025 Another big loss was the Ile de France, Cristoforo Colombo and SS rex. At least we still have the Big U, Queen Mary, Doulos phos, SS borea, S.S. Great britain, Nomadic, N.S. Savannah, M.S. Birger Jarl, M.S Sunnhordland (1945) and M.S Astoria (1943) M.S. cap San Diego, S.S. Rotterdam and Hikawa Maru.
Instead, the Olympic and Mauretania were scrapped side by side.
@@johnboy4025 So basically all of first class. 2nd and 3rd class had communal bathrooms.
Olimpic would be an ant to QMs bridge
One of my favourite ships. Stayed overnight on her in the late 80’s. staying overnight was better as you could wander the ship until your hearts content and also got a better tour. It was the thrill of a lifetime. One difference between the Normandie and the queen mary was that the Normandie had turbo electric propulsion. The old liners have so much more character than the cruise ships do.
I feel in love with the Queen Mary when she played the starring in role in 1972's "The Poseidon Adventure." I was 11 years old at the time. Too late to ride the real thing, but not too late to dream about it.
Or make that dream a reality and actually be able to go aboard her one of these days!!! ....once she opens again, that is.
you can still go on her at Long beach!
Even ships can be actors
Thank you great big move for teaching us about great ocean liners I know there’s not a lot of people interested in ocean liners but you bring more people to our community everyday👍❤️
That's the goal!
I went on the queen mary in the summer of 2019 and I didn't realize how massive the ship was until I stood right next to it.
I was so waiting for this, RMS Queen Mary is my favourite ship of all time

I feel so lucky to live 20 minutes away from the Queen Mary, I have taken the tour many times starting in the early 70's with my mom and dad then I took my kids. I have now have taken my grandson on the tour a few times. It is well worth the time and cost. Great video, I enjoy the narration. Thanks for your time and hard work........
The Queen Mary is moored here in Long Beach, Ca.
I always wanted to go inside and stay the night but never had the chance.
Now I want to go more than ever
Holy crap what a good video. So happy to see more content on the Queen that does not revolve around comparisons to Titanic or ghost stories. Love this channel!
Well the QM's designers did include a majority of the elements of the olympic class ship's designs into the queen mary along with elements of the Mauritania. the 2nd class entrance/ promenade area is basically a 1 for one copy of Titanic's Ken marshall even toured the ship and pointed it out.
AHA! A fellow gentleman with a Silk Plush Top Hat Profile!
How do you do, my dear fellow? *tips top hat*
Really in-depth look at one of the nicest ships that ever sailed. Can't wait for part two!
Hi
Thank you so much for this video, I truly enjoyed it! Looking forward to Part 2
My father in law served during WWII and was one of the first medics to land in Normandy on D day.
He would never talk about his service except to say that he went to GB on the Queen Mary, and that he actually saw Patton.
My late friend Bonnie & her young son, had the privilege of traveling across the ocean on the old Queen Mary. I was fascinated just knowing I knew someone who actually traveled on it !
on a daily basis i see where she was born ..and her being a tourist attraction in america i feel proud my little town clydebank built her..god bless her
I love these videos! They satisfy my interest of ocean liners every time they are released. I’m probably the only person who likes ocean liners in my whole country, so your videos are fun a way for me to learn about ocean liners.
Yeah man finally! I was waiting for this video for a loooong time, salute from Italy
Just discovered your channel a couple days ago and have now watched every single video. Great work! I'm now fascinated by ocean liners. Also looking forward to seeing a part 2 for the airships video.
My nana and papa came to Canada 🇨🇦 from England 🏴 in 1956 on the Queen Mary. Nana passed away just yesterday 😟at 88 years old. Thanks for the video
Wow, this is perfect timing. I have to do a research paper for school and since I’m obsessed with ocean liners I’m doing it on the Queen Mary. The next day you upload this. I’m excited and this should really help!
Wonderful video...Hull #534 was supposed to be named the RMS Queen Victoria, but became Queen Mary through a misunderstanding on King Goerge's part. The MacDonald Gill map also had a light indicator depictiong the position of the QM on the Atlantic relative to The US and UK.
Very much enjoyed this video. My husband emigrated to Canada with his Mother (Cdn. war bride), on the Queen Mary. They left Southampton on April 24, arriving at Ellis Island on April 29, 1951. He was 2 years old. We have a copy of the manifest. My 55th birthday gift to him was a cruise on QM2 to learn that one of the original horns on the original Queen Mary has a new home on QM2. You portray her beautifully. Thank you!
I'm happy that you're making some videos about one of the, or for a lot of people (kinda including me) the most beautiful ship that has ever sailed our oceans/seas.
I just love this ship so much. Great video! :D
Great work - your channel has really become awesome!
Just love your channel so much.
Thank you for another interesting video!
i love this!!!....i've been on the Queen mary and just love these huge ships!!!
Great video!!.. anticipating part two..
Here I am still fantasizing about the Oceanic III.
Great video thanks about my favourite ship and I’m very much looking forward Part 2👍🇧🇲😀!
Well Done!! Great video! I have been on the 'Mary" in Long Beach numerous times
Thanks, Gregory!
I love the content of your channel. A great discovery. And Cunard’s beautiful Queen Mary 2 is anchored at this time off Torbay, England, where I live; awaiting a post-Covid life back at sea. The only purpose built transatlantic ocean liner in the world.
I live near Long Beach and the management of the ship is ridiculous. They just filed for bankruptcy the other day.
Is that true?
Yes: Apparently US$500 million in the red!! Could this be the end of the Queen?? I hope not.
Its not ridiculous cause covid went into the way.
I may be 14 but I still love the history of ocean liners

My husband and I had our first anniversary dinner on her. Now it’s been 19 years of marriage, and that is still our best anniversary spent together.
i went on the Queen Mary back in 2017, I remember my Cabin which was the Queen Elizabeth suite, it was nice tho, I didn't get to see much of the ship, it was nice tho, I wish I could see more of it!

Wonderful video! I've always wondered what she looked like on the inside...thank you!
Nice video... but did the guest speaker just recorded with a laptop mic?...
The Queen Mary was built by Cunard White Star Line. Both companies merged together during the great depression in 1934 due to economic losses. They continued to be a joint company until 1949. In 1949 Cunard bought out the remaining White Star Line shares ,causing White Star Line to cease existing. It didn't help that Cunard had owned about 62% of the company during the merge. ( White Star Line only had control over 38% of the company because of ship losses before, during, and after ww1)
Love your videos, I lowkey wish you'd do every single major ocean liner and even some of the minors.
I will do as many as I can. There are a lot of ships I am excited to cover.
Yah i been waiting for this
The largest ship I've ever seen with my own eyes was actually the Queen Mary 2 while she was docking in Southampton during my childhood. It was so collosal to my tiny, 12 year old eyes that I cannot remember anything but the very front of the ship and how it towered over me. It was just so huge that I couldn't comprehend anything else, and I didn't even get onboard!
Queen Mary is probably one of my favorite ships
Who had the audacity to downvote this before it even aired -.-

Beautiful
Hello Great big move. Always watchin your vids. Can you also please make a video about RMS Carmania and RMS Caronia? I can just see little info about those beautiful ships. Thanks in advance and more power to your channel! :)
The QUEEN of ocean liners!
I'm sure that airships would not have been a major threat until the '60s due to limited capacity(and history) because it wasn't until the mid-60s when planes started to take over. Given the small size of passengers allowed, I would still have preferred ship travel since it is more lavish. I like Normandie's exterior more but I like the toned-down feel of the interior of Queen Mary/Elizabeth.
I know this was a video about RMS Queen Mary...but damn, Normandie must have looked like a starship in her day. Paint her up a bit differently, and she could *almost* pass for a modern-day Disney cruise ship (shape wise).
Yaaaaaaayyy another upload

Nicely done. Very enjoyable. Thank You. Steve Todd
Thank you, Steve! Glad you enjoyed it.

When I was a kid I didn’t live too far from the steamship piers in New York. My grandfather would bring me down there to see the liners come in and depart. The steamship schedules were actually in the newspapers back in the 50s. I saw the Queen Mary many times.
Steve.
The new intro is very nice. So great seeing you do a bio on the Queen Mary! Even cooler that you did it with Fox Star: THAT got my attention doubled! OlympicWS is coming out with yet another QM doc too, so it's real neat that I'm basically getting 2 docs in 1 package. (that package of course being the Queen) She was quite a ship indeed and hands down one of the greatest liners to exist. Can't wait for Part 2! :D
"Shall I press the Like button now?"... ;)
kudos
Growing up in Long Beach Ca the queen Mary has always been apart of my life and is my favorite ship of all time... great place to visit but they are struggling to make money right now
Great video can't wait for part 2. Are you going to make part 2 of the airships video?
Yes, I will make it eventually. It's not at the top of the list right now, though.
I hope you won’t mind a small correction on the pronunciation of the name of the award for the fastest trans-Atlantic crossing. The award is called the Blue Riband and the emphasis is on the second syllable of Riband (ri-BAND).
Awesome I can’t wait for part 2 . If possible can you do a video about Germany’s super liners like Bremen?
I intend to!
Nice I love your videos I find them so informative and interesting.
Btw, I spent my honeymoon onboard Queen Mary...my wife and I had a great time. It was SO beautiful. I couldn't help but to walk around, but so many areas of the ship were blocked off, and I felt kind of robbed considering the fact that it was fairly expensive to stay on the ship. This was back in 2007 and it was $350 per night and we stayed in a tiny room with an extremely hard bed on B deck. I don't remember the cabin number. However, it was worth it for me. I loved it. I still wish I would've taken my wife to the Bahamas (and I've been there 5 times)...
I love your videos. So excited when new ones come out.
Is the audio not quite synched up for anyone else? There's a really small but noticeable delay for me.
I hate how people made of queen mary nowadays, instead of looking at her like a treasure from a Forgotten Era, they visit her and make videos about how "haunted" the ship is, me personally think that the ship was so beloved by many, that even after she was decomissioned and turned into a floating hotel, the spirits of the people who saw her when she was a young ship still is inside the ship and continue to protect it no matter what.
I think the remains of Queen Elizabeth were used in at least one of the James Bond films or had a small part in the film's anyway
I have read that the Queen Elizabeth had a top speed of 32 knots and on trials achieved incredible speed , however Cunard , having achieved the Blue Riband with Queen Mary and no competitors until 1952 did not want their ships to be racing each other and did not want the prestige of the Queen Mary to be taken away which makes sense , they had achieved their two ship weekly service and at 29 knots , both ships easily fulfilled that obligation , no need to waste costly fuel on silly one- upmanship .
New vid letz goooo!!
Love you vids
There was something so beautiful about ships back than 😍
I was always fascinated by the haunted side of this ship
My favorite Ocean Liner
What about RMS titanic
If i was an ocean liner I would marry her. She is so BEAUTIFUL 🤩
Thanks for doing what i asked :D
I didn't go, I was waiting for you to call lol
You think you could make a video on the NFL sisters Bremen and Europa? Both have interesting stories that rival the ones of Queen Mary
I heard they declared bankruptcy and there is major damage to the ship. I hope this will be saved. It is a beautiful majestic ship.
Damage is repairable and Long Beach owns the Ship. She was being leased to a hospitality company. Its the company that went bankrupt but it seems they finished all but 8 repairs that are still needed. If the company did not or was not able to finish and given the situation right now. Its likely the city will finish the work themselves.
Such a beatifull ship! The german ship reminded me of the ss Rotterdam
Am I getting a part 2 to the airships video? sorry for sounding needy I just like the vids.
Hey there….. I think you’ll be quite interested in this tid bit about the great ships name…… In traditional Cunard fashion the Mary was indeed to have a name that ended in ‘ia’. Cunard had planned to name her Queen Victoria….. Company officials told the King. However, how they told him sealed the fate of her name. They told the king they were to name her after Britain’s greatest Queen , to which the King replied, “ My wife will be delighted.”
Bauhaus (1919) did influence Art Deco, but Art Deco (Art Decoratif) style was born as early as 1875 in France. Non the less, Art Deco was born from many different styles, including Bauhaus.
I'm sorry if I sound rude by saying this but fox star should change his mic or at least record his voice with his phone microphone. the audio is so piercing it made some sections very difficult to watch. other than that great vid and explanation!
I think Fox Star did a great job given what he had to work with, but we will make sure we get a better audio setup on his end for any future collaborations. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
@@TheGreatBigMove eyyy thank you for your understanding, looking forward to the next video. By chance have ever planned for a QM2 video?
@@datgood121 Yes, I definitely want to cover QM2 in some capacity.
The government agreed the funding on the basis of the Cunard and White Star Line merging - the White Star Line being in a precarious position financially. Additionally, shipping lines had to change their product with the passing of new immigration laws in the US in the early 1920's.
The QM has spent a lot of time as a Hotel, which I have visited or stayed at many times.
It is also a namesake for the Queen Mary effect.
The Liner on paper loses money as a hotel and recreation area, but the increased tax revenue from building that have a view of the ship makes it profitable. The result has been an emphasis on esthetics in public works projects. I was touring the Queen Mary the day the QMII visited.
Have you considered doing a video on the Morro Castle?
Idk why but i just have difficulty to fit the voice to your face.. xD anyway great video as always :)
after this series can you do ss bremen and ss europa please i want to know more about it

The Queen Mary is in a serious situation now. The owner has declared bankruptcy, and now it's basically just rotting away. Hopefully someone can intervene.
