CAA Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme. UK Drone registration scheme is now live and is mandatory from 30 Nov 2019. So here's a tutorial for the whole registration process. How do you register your drone? What is the difference between an Operator ID and a Flyer ID? Do you need both? What's involved in the CAA test and how to pass. All this and more unfolds in this video on possibly the most ill-thought bit of CAA legislation to date (IMHO)...

So, it's live. And it's mandatory from 30 Nov 2019. What are your thoughts? (Be as expressive as you like........)

I’m somewhat surprised about how vehement some of the views are against the registration. It’s far from perfect but it is light touch - there are far more restrictive rules that could have been applied, for example the requirement to be a member of a registered model flying club. The theory test is simple, but it never does any harm to remind yourself of what you think you know. And as for ‘freedom’, not everyone appreciates that what is ‘fun’ to them can be intrusive and annoying to someone else; a good example of this was the extreme fireworks available a few years ago that folks thought they could set off anytime they liked without any thought at all to neighbours, pets, children etc. The registration does give legitimacy and will help if challenged by a ‘member of the public’, and I’m sure registration will be needed if you take out insurance (has anyone covered this topic?). The biggest problem I can see is reports to the police along the lines of ‘I saw drone 1234 flying 49 meters from a building’ what are you going to do about it’.

Hmm noticing on the various forums people rushing to register and boasting about their scores, rather than refusing to accept this nonsense. I was ok on this vid until you said you had to put in your DOB to “prove” your age? Then I just laughed at the absurdity of it!

It looks like a good way for them to make £9 every year and if it is for safety reasons it should be free. just looks like treating honest people like cash cows.

Hi Ian thank you for another informative video, I own a DJI mavic platinum and have had great fun flying it in my local park and here in Devon on our moors , I have always flown safely and with respect for others around me , 99.9 % of spectators have always expressed an interest asking the usual " how much, how high, how far " etc. Never had any problems at all except for ... ( here comes my rant, and I know it's controversial ) one time flying in my local park ( far away from anyone) , some old guy approached me claiming that I was "breaking the law" and that I had "frightened his dog" he soon buggered of after I told him that I was a member of the BMFA and that I had insurance and asked him if he had a licence and insurance for his dog that was running around children ( off lead) here's my point , if the Government are so concerned about collecting revenues ( and we all know they are) then why not make all dog owners register and insure their dogs, and cyclists register and insure their cycles after all , if a dog bites a child for example ? the owner could quite easily get away without retribution by running off , and possibly the dog would follow them back home ? ( hypothetical and difficult to police) and the cyclist that can scratch your vehicle or knock of your £150 wing mirror and bugger off whilst you are sitting stuck in traffic ? No retribution for them , just a trip to A&E in the first case and a reduced bank balance in the second ?

As someone who has only ever flown small toy drones until now, I understand the need for something like this as otherwise I'm likely to just fly anywhere without the thought of consequence. So, from an educational point of view, I think it's a great idea.

I live near a prison.Everytime something happens there with a drone they will look at this registration scheme and come straight to me as I am the nearest because the regs tell them to. NO THANKS!

Another great video Ian, I cant believe the difference in the level of questions from UK test & the Canadian one, I’m A UK citizen & have just returned from a holiday in Vancouver, I took the Canadian test & managed to scrape a pass, but my word, the questions were very different, even had one about radio frequency for Calgary Airport 😳. Keep up the good work 👍

Thanks for the video, all passed and registered! Honestly feels good as I live just outside Lincoln and am very aware of the fact I've got RAF Waddington and Scampton nearby and those amazing red arrows blasting by randomly. I always try to fly responsibly and now feels a bit more official.
