I live on the Treasure Coast of Florida and one of my friends is a professional treasure diver. Every time a tropical storm or hurricane comes through, so many new discovers are uncovered. It’s pretty damn cool.

I live in Jacksonville and always wondered if pirates or the Spanish ever cam up the St. John's and buried treasure around Jacksonville/ St. Augustine area. I've had the treasure seeking bug after living in the Florida keys for 20 years and searching for shipwrecks. I actually went out and searched/ marked submerged or derelict vessels after hurricane Irma. I'm in the process of getting my non profit ocean cleanup and conservation group up and running and if I find artifacts or treasure in the process that would be cool.

Who gets to keep the treasure? Do the government claim it and give a finders fee or do they take the whole lot.... or do the people that find the treasure get to keep it all? If you have any answers to these questions it would be much appreciated..... cheers.

I suspect that many old treasuries that are found go unreported. If I found a ton of gold, I wouldn’t tell a soul! Just for the government to confiscate it, or tax the crap out of it. Too many stories of such treasures lost to crooked governments, or some insurance claim that returns it to the owner who lost it 600 years ago.

some guy walked past a dead snail in the sun and saw that the slime oozing out of it had changed purple. this person was able to do some basic critical thinking and smashed another snail and placed it in the sun, getting the same result. centuries of trial and error ironed out the kinks, and history was left with a profitable method of producing a rare color of pigment. fascinating, yes, but also perfectly reasonable.

With the pirate treasure, I gotta take a closer look at that, since I lived in Middletown RI, for about a year, years before this finding happened. That said, I doubt it was found on a farm, unless it is a fish farm, or a spot in someone's backyard where they grow some crops for personal consumption. Middletown is one of three towns on a rather small island, inside of the bay that nearly divides the state in half.

I'm not sure this find actually confirms king David's existence, although he probably did exist. In ancient Egypt a time came when non royals were allowed to wear purple, perhaps others were allowed in Israel or the wearer being a foreign visitor? A lot of conclusions based on little evidence with this find i believe.

You forgot to mention the shitloads of platinum that the Spanish conquistadors threw overboard while sailing back home, because they thought it was a useless, lesser form of silver (hence the name _platina,_ Spanish for "little silver").

I reckon that many adults now buried keepsakes when they were children, be it something special, porn mags or time capsules made from a lunch or shoe box. Well, those were Things to my curious self in the 1970's, and to be honest, I would often forget where I buried such treasures due to distraction, and this was a few decades before the rabbit hole known as Wikipedia. I mean, seriously...go there to check on a minor detail about a particular cheese, and four hours later I'm mildly conversant on Type V molten salt reactors.

funny that i found your post....i went to check a historical reference on Wikipedia today and found it scrubbed....it was regarding the development of thalidomide and its testing at Auchwitz during WW2, and the subsequent hiring of nazi scientists by Chemei Grunenthal and ALL major pharmaceutical companies in the United States. Compound 4589. Wikipedia used to make reference to an article in Onco Zine, and though i found some, i couldn't access them.

@@persnikitty3570 i knew that anyone could contribute, and i don't trust Wikipedia for much...i have caught them out regarding white tigers being a species when they are actually a product of inbreeding, for instance; i didn't realize that anyone could edit. i am old enough and well read enough to be able to do my own internet research, and i can spot rewritten history at least in areas in which i am fairly well read, however there are well researched history books and there is outright balderdash masquerading as "history" being published more and more lately. Britannica used to be reliable, i hope it still is. i recently had intricate hand surgery during which i recall extolling to the surgeon the virtues of my 1926 Webster's Unabridged over the OED....gawd, the very definition of pomposity. (though i WAS correct)

Well, when Jesus was born, Emperor Tiberius thought, "Wow, this could be big", so with his advisors they projected that well into the future, the corner of the Empire that is the U.K. today would eventually end up enjoying some fleeting supremacy, and that they'd also need to project the migration of post Empirical peoples, and how their language would morph and evolve. That's how they came up with "Before Christ." Then they had everyone in the Roman Empire bring in all their coins so they could be re-stamped with the correct date. I'm surprised you didn't hear about that, it was in all the news scrolls.

I think that in Finland you get 20 € or something for a massive find. If you find gold here, they'll take it without negotiation. Never ever report any find to anyone. If you find a WW2 bomb or something, just leave it there in hopes that some government official s stumbles upon it
