CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The British land on Sword Beach with Private Flanagan (Sean Connery) at the front and Captain Maud (Kenneth More)
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Longest Day is a mammoth, all-star re-creation of the D-Day invasion, personally orchestrated by Darryl F. Zanuck. Whenever possible, the original locations were utilized, and an all-star international cast impersonates the people involved, from high-ranking officials to ordinary GIs. Each actor speaks in his or her native language with subtitles translating for the benefit of the audience (alternate "takes" were made of each scene with the foreign actors speaking English, but these were seen only during the first network telecast of the film in 1972). The stars are listed alphabetically, with the exception of John Wayne, who as Lt. Colonel Vandervoort gets separate billing. Others in the huge cast include Eddie Albert, Jean-Louis Barrault, Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Gert Frobe, Curt Jurgens, Peter Lawford, Robert Mitchum, Kenneth More, Edmond O'Brien, Robert Ryan, Jean Servais, Rod Steiger and Robert Wagner. Paul Anka, who wrote the film's title song, shows up as an Army private. Scenes include the Allies parachuting into Ste. Mere Englise, where the paratroopers were mowed down by German bullets; a real-life sequence wherein the German and Allied troops unwittingly march side by side in the dark of night; and a spectacular three-minute overhead shot of the troops fighting and dying in the streets of Quistreham. The last major black-and-white road-show attraction, The Longest Day made millions, enough to recoup some of the cost of 20th Century Fox's concurrently produced Cleopatra.

Rest in Peace, Sir Sean Connery
R.I.P. most people in this scene
James Bond before he joined MI6
This film had many great actors may they rest in peace
He’s still got his Scottish accent!!
After filming his scenes in this, Connery literally flew straight to Jamaica to start work on Dr. No
This might have looked easy to some people who claim Omaha beach was worse, but i don't think any one realises how tough it was in the following battles in land where the British ran into 8 Panzer divisions and 3 Tiger Battalions stationed around Caen.
Yes, brits and canadians had best divisions facing them
Ok.
Yeah D-day was a push over compared to what they faced in the days and weeks that followed
Juno & Omaha were the worst beaches. There was a fortified village just next to the Canadian landing areas and their casualty reports show it. I visited the place last September. Also Point Du Hoc was an extremely imposing sight to see in real life. Must've been absolute hell.
That piper briefly seen was meant to represent Bill Millin, ordered to play by his commander the Lord Lovat. He subsequently played walking up and down the beach as the British troops came ashore - under fire. The Germans thought he was mad and did not shoot him. Piper Millin subsequently piped the charge across Pegasus Bridge, as 11 of his comrades were killed around him.
He lived until 2010.
Peter Graves and he wore a kilt during all of it. A bonafide badass.
Hell, I'd have thought he was nuts as well.
Freaking legend
a true bard. if I ever make a bard character he shall bear the name of bill millin
勉強になりました〜🐸
Great line here,
Sooner we get off this beach the sooner they stop the shelling, it not good for the dog"
If you can't drive it carry it!
Well it was called a Bren CARRIER.
Oops !!
My Grandmother used to say anything mechanical give it a good bash.
If you read up on the character, he was thought to be the most liked officer in the RN and his dog was a German Sheppard not a bulldog.
RIP, Sir Connery!
Sean Connery is the only star to appear in this war epic and A Bridge Too Far...both titles are authored by Cornelius Ryan!
A bridge too far is so great! Sean is great in it!
The guy who played General Max Pemsel in this is Field Marshal Von Rundstedt in the opening of a bridge too far. Think it’s Wolfgang Preiss
both amazing films too
Rip Sean Connery
1930 - 2020
Sean Connery and John Wayne on the same movie
Wow
This was a fantastic movie
I will miss Sean Connery
Gert frobe was also in this.
Robert Mitchum too
Loved kennth more in this, even though he had a small part in it
Quite interesting that Sean Connery and Gert Frobe would later reunite in 1964 for a midas movie title entitled GOLDFINGER
I see what you did there.
And Curd Jürgens
"Karl Stromberg"
Ashleybradbury actually after Connery was finished his role in this film he went to Jamaica to start filming for “Dr. No” the first Bond Movie
RIP Sean Connery
The Glorious sound of the Bagpipes leading the troops into Battle always loved the sound of them!🤗😂🥁🎼🎼🎼🏴🇬🇧
Me too
From footage I've seen, some of the British troops that arrived to fight in Korea stepped off their ships in 1950 with bagpipes blasting. Quite the impressive scene.
RIP Sean Connery
And they cut it off at one of the best parts where he said"my old grandmother said anything mechanical give it a bash"he took his crooked walking stick hit it and when it cranked up the biggest look of surprise came upon his face like I guess my old grandmother was right! A masterpiece of a scene that got very little attention!
Didn't Connery and his mate also have positive comments about his dog?
Connery..”that’s one helluva man”
Mate…”and I like the dog too”
No, I expect you to drown, Mr. Bond!
Anything mechanical give it a good bash
"Down Winston, down"
Actually, I believe it was, "Come, Winston. Come." :-)
Sean Connery appeared in this same year in his debut performance as James bond in Dr no
He flew straight to Jamaica to start filming Dr. No
After watching this I imagine if someone from the 60's watched the D-Day scene from Saving Private Ryan they'd have a heart attack
Well, the resistence of the Germans was different on the different beaches. Omaha (the beach of SPR) was called "Bloody" for some reason and even in the 1962 movie is filmed as a massacre. Here we are at Sword beach, British sector (east) of the Normandy Landings.
@meder There was only one "director"....
From the 60's? You mean when a lot of the actual veterans of this very landing were still alive? I'd imagine they saw things that would even make viewers of Saving Private Ryan have a heart attack.......
Saving Private Ryan makes The Longest Day look a childrens movie.
@@TheBlackbrunswicker I heard many D-day veterans back in 98 went to the premiere of SPR and had to leave in the beginning because it was too real
Commander Marko Goldfinger Bond. Rest in peace to the greatest Sovoet sub commander born out of Scotland.
Aah rats - just short of my favorite scene:
Connery "it won't start"
Beachmaster "My grandmother used to say, anything mechanical, give it a good bash!"
The real Colin Maud actually loaned Kenneth More the real shillelagh he carried on DDay to use in the movie, and Maud did actually have his dog with him on the beach, only his real dog was a German Shepherd. Since a German officer was shown to already have a German Shepherd dog in the movie, Maud's dog was changed to a stereotypical English Bulldog to keep audiences from being confused.
Well done cousins! Much respect from the Yanks!!
Chef Tyler Marsh After World War One, two, Iraq and Afghanistan it’s more like brothers.
@@jamiestewart48 your right!
RIP Sir Connery.
In comparison to "save private ryan" this looks like a walk in the park. Even the dog seems fully relaxed.
The British side of WW2 isn't represented enough
RIP Sir Sean connery
Commander Colin Maud in the movie wears the rank of a Captain.
Aside from Lord Lovat, ALL OF THIS ACTION shown in this scene in the movie took place at the Canadian landing JUNO BEACH. Colin Maud, Tommy Flannnigan , etc ALL at Juno.
Yes Canada House in the background very noticeable
Whoa! Sean Connery!
Rest in peace bill millin the piper who bravely machered up and down the beach that day
It shows Lord Lovat (Peter Lawford) leading the way. In fact, he allowed Keiffer's French Commandos to be first to set foot in their country.
Some ' poetic license ' took place in these scenes. Lord Lovat landed at Sword Beach.
Colin Maud was the chief Beach Master at Juno Beach, some miles away.
an easy bet to win is asking "what 1962 movie featured Sean Connery and Gert Frobe" - and almost everyone answers Goldfinger, which was produced in '64. Frobe played the Wehrmacht sergeant bringing coffee to a bunker.
Sean Connery asked that his scenes be filmed quickly so he could get to Jamaica in time to star in Dr. No.
Dr. No, the movie that propelled Sean Connery into superstardom was released on October 5, 1962 just days after the September 25, 1962 release of The Longest Day.
The greatest sea invasion in all of history
Gotta love Lord Lovat's sense of style- going into combat in a seater and a beret. The sweater had to get hot after awhile. At least he is carrying a standard issue rifle (SMLE)- good leadership there. Probably didn't want to mark himself as a high-ranking officer (i.e. a sniper magnet) by only carrying a pistol- although i suspect the sweater and beret would do just that
The Lord Lovat carried his own Winchester 70 hunting rifle, and the one shown here, like the stick held by Colin Maud, were the ones used on the day.
Anyone else notice the single shot .22 the brit yelling about Dunkirk has?
Captain Colin Maud (played here by Kenneth More) wasn't at Sword Beach. He was the principal Beachmaster at Juno Beach.
Love this movie, only because it's well made. This is why we need to all live in harmony , all over this world. Remember these men
Fort the the free world, from single domination by ONE man. We can't let that happen for our children and grandchildren future
If only this world was only inhabitated by whites and east Asians…….
It's a story we keep telling ourselves over and over and over till we forget it's a lie. These men all died in vain. The truth that millions of lives got wasted for nothing is something we just can't cope. British, Americans, French, Germans, Italians, Japanese and Russians all fought for the same thing and were all equally brave and to be pitied.
Look at the differences on the beach landing between Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day.
This site always cuts the damn clips when theyre in the middle and at the best bits
RIP
Sean Connery
(1930-2020)
That landing craft must have held 300 troops.
God bless you, Sir Sean.
o7
anybody notice how some scene bill didn't manage to get the bagpipes ready?
I love being british when I see things like that taking dogs and bagpipes into the most deadly battle.
IRL the dog was a German shepherd and the guy playing the bagpipes was based on a real person who not only did it but lived till 2010 at the age of 88 to be specific
Did yer hear that , did yer hear that . Dunkirk sure he was in short trousers at the time ! Brilliant
He said "I'm sure he was still in school at the time"
Today is June 6, 2020
Didn't know Pvt Flanagan was Sean Connery till today..😅
1962: British Invasion.
1964: British Invasion.
Filme maravilhoso. Fidedigno. Baseado no livro O MAIS LONGO DOS DIAS, de Cornelius Ryan. Fez e continua fazendo enorme sucesso no Brasil. Um documentário esplêndido sobre o Dia D ...6..6.1944. jacb/são Paulo. BRASIL.
.
I just had a vision of Sean Connery as Shake to Norman Rossington's Norm.
Sean Connery is in Dr No the same year 1962.
I forgot that the british joined the landings lol, movie today only shows the American pov
Semper Fidelis to all our soldiers who sacrificed in WW2.
What about the non US Marines that served in WWII?
Good movie
Maud dog, called Winston was a German Shepherd, but was changed to a British bulldog for the film
i am happy i found this
0:18 so interesting too see sean connery before he played james bond 007 in dr no
Best comedy central
Connery just before the big time
Churchill knew on Dec 7, 1941, the was would be won.
I love the black and white
Kenneth More with a beard!
I will miss sean Connery
What a clean war. No blood, no shot off limbs, no viscera. Just Sean Connery making a fool of himself. :)
Sword beach was a walk in the park compared to Omaha beach by the looks of it.
It was like that with most of them Omaha was the exception because the bombs missed there targets
Sword, Gold, and Utah were by far quiet easy beaches to capture for a number of reasons. First, the air raids before the landings hit their targets on and near those beaches and the Naval bombardment was more successful at Sword, Gold, and Juno than at Omaha and Utah. Second the Germans only had light resistance on those beaches because the Allies had convinced the Germans there was going to be an American landing at Calais and a British landing in Norway. Third, Rommel knew that defending the beaches of Eastern Normandy (Where Sword, Gold, and Juno were) was difficult without high terrain, thus he had most of the defenses built further inland at more favorable ground. At Utah the defenses were light because the Germans figured nobody would land and try to climb cliffs, the Americans proved them wrong. Omaha was the only stretch of beach on the Normandy coastline that was in a situation for the Germans to stop an invasion on the beach with favorable defensive ground. Omaha however couldn't be ignored or bypassed, the Allies needed a continuous front and thus Omaha needed to be captured to better prepare for a counterattack. The British and Canadians would later suffer Omaha like conditions further inland when the infantry had to fight SS Panzer divisions further south.
Juno Beach for the Canadians was easier than Omaha but harder than Utah, Gold and Sword. The Canadians had to land in a town and immediately take on street fighting. The Canadians also landed later in the morning so the German defenders were alert. The shoreline of Juno was muddy as well and quicksand prevented heavy equipment from getting through and men had to make their way through the slog while under gunfire. However the situation at Juno was much better than at Omaha.
Keep in mind this was only the second wave
FINALY A D-DAY MOVIE!!!
007 Undercover
AAAAHHH !!GREAT MOVIE !!LOADS OF SPOTTING TOP " STAR'S " !!FROM (U.K.)
Anyone else notice the M3 Grease gun when Sean Connery puts his head out the water ?
Presumably didn't have enough British weapons available
There are also British troops using Carbines too.
Is that a Bren carrier at the last scene?
Sure is.
Sean Connery had to filmed his scenes quickly so he can go to Jamaica to do James Bond Dr No that same year
Keeep those vehicles moving MP s. Chase off those cyclist! The sooner you people get off this beach the sooner they stop this blasted shelling its bad for my dog! Down winston down! Lol legend
less casualties
ok, unusual question, but what did the chefs in the beginning scenes serve the troops that they complained and in turn the chef fired back "I don't care what you do with it, I only get paid to serve it to you."
Time for a brew up
Is there no footage of the Canadians landing?
I find it funny how theres a brit using a m3 grease gun at 0:35
@Gazzara5 I ment m3 and its definitely a m3 as I own one so I know what they look like
@Gazzara5 look at the top left
@KravOv no the m3 grease gun is a us design
@Gazzara5 probably just didn't have enough specifically British guns for everyone so they put some American or German ones at the back where they thought people wouldn't notice
Bond was at the beach? Lol
The worst fighting in normandy took place after the landings
Winston was at sword beachhead
Nothing like the sound of the pipes.
It's bad for the Dog.
If it won't start, carry it.
Who would not feel confident to overthrow the waffen SS after hearing these words of inspiration.
It's bad for the dog, typical British understating.
High 5s.
Respects to all those fallen heroes.
Okay let's see on June 6th 1944 is American forces and Canadian Forces and British forces had landed on Normandy.
My dad was born on that day, in San Diego Ca.
Plus a dozen Polish squadrons overhead and some Polish destroyers. 1st Polish Armored division landed a few weeks later and fought with distinction at Falaise.
James Bond gets a Bren gun and Gold finger a mule.
Goldfinger is on the other side.
Duno whether youre being ironic or not but yes Gert Frobbe did play a German soldier in this film.
They really to show the british army more in war movies
front lines and the free french and polish forces.
Yeah they show the free french in one of my favourite battle scenes.
There are a lot of movies with british army in it.
Patton should have taken lessons from Lord Lovett.
is this action or comedy?
Its a war film just as you see, with some humour through it like any decent drama.
Don't know about the British, but in theory US beachmasters outranked even 4 star generals until the beachhead was declared secure.
1940's englishman is so british even they brought bagpipes to the battle
Angry Scots typing infuriated comments about you calling them English, lord Lovat was a scot and so was his Piper
is that the Bartek Bludgeon he is carrying?
若い007🎬
Are those royal marines or black watch commandos?
Might be kieffer
whats with the background music bruh
Tradition pal, that's clearly a highland regiment so they get serenaded into battle with bagpipes.
Optimistic Whovian even better story than that. Bagpipes were banned on the front line but Lovett was Scottish nobility and ignored it.According to reports the Germans didn’t shoot him because they thought he was insane
why tf would they bring a bull dog
cos its his dog?
COME ON YOU BASTARDS !!!!....RIP Sir Sean Connery
Bulldogs. God's gift to mankind.
