A key fob is a generally decorative and at times useful item many people often carry with their keys, on a ring or a chain, for ease of tactile identification, to provide a better grip, or to make a personal statement. The word fob may be linked to the low German dialect for the word Fuppe, meaning "pocket", however, the real origin of the word is uncertain. Fob pockets (meaning 'sneak proof' from the German word Foppen) were pockets meant to deter thieves. A short "fob chain" was used to attach to items, like a pocket watch, placed in these pockets.[2]
Fobs vary considerably in size, style and functionality. Most commonly they are simple discs of smooth metal or plastic, typically with a message or symbol such as that of a logo (as with conference trinkets) or a sign of an important group affiliation. A fob may be symbolic or strictly aesthetic, but it can also be a small tool. Many fobs are small flashlights, compasses, calculators, penknives, discount cards, bottle openers, security tokens, and USB flash drives. As electronic technology continues to become smaller and cheaper, miniature key-fob versions of (previously) larger devices are becoming common, such as digital photo frames, remote control units for garage door openers, barcode scanners and simple video games (e.g. Tamagotchi) or other gadgets such as breathalyzers.
Some retail establishments such as gasoline stations keep their bathrooms locked and customers must ask for the key from the attendant. In such cases, the keychain has a very large fob to make it difficult for customers to walk off with the key.
The Kia Soul is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive, five-door subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed worldwide by Kia Motors and now in its third generation.
Designed at Kia's design center in California, the Soul debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show and is manufactured in South Korea. Since 2014, Kia has marketed an electric variant as the Soul EV in North and Central America as well as Europe.
The Kia Rio is a subcompact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Kia Motors since November 1999 and now in its fourth generation. Body styles have included a three and five-door hatchback and four-door sedan, equipped with inline-four gasoline and diesel engines, and front-wheel drive.
The Rio replaced the first-generation Pride-a rebadged version of the Ford Festiva-and the Avella, a subcompact sold as a Ford in some markets. A second generation was introduced in 2005 in Europe and 2006 in North America, sharing its platform with the Hyundai Accent, a subcompact manufactured by its sister Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea.

Thank you so much! I was quoted about $350 from the dealer, and then $275 from a local "Affordable Locksmith" company to replace my worn out FOB. $7 on Amazon and about 25 minutes later and it was fixed. The only thing that tripped me up was the spring recoil! Why'd you move your hands off camera????😂😂😂 thanks again though seriously you are a legend with this

It most certainly was not as easy as your video would suggest. I have been working at this for about an hour and a half. So far all have to show for my work is a torn up fob, a cut finger, and still no useable fob.
2 1/2 hours later, after dragging out my Dremel and breaking out the miniature circular saw, and after a series of surgical cuts through the polymer shell, I was finally able to disect the evil thing and liberate the circuit board. After that, I could then follow the rest of your video to a successful conclusion.

Jack thanks for your responses! It was a good learning experience for me that maybe all Kia keys aren’t the same. My key is so easy to do this with. I remove the screw and then everything else is super easy. I don’t own any tools other than a screwdriver, pliers, and a hammer. Just wanted to save people some money. But yeah it’s been a good learning experience hearing about the challenges others have faced trying to complete this task. Thanks again 🙏

ThisIsFoure. The Kia dealership wanted $240 and I was completely disgusted with that. It was $6.71 on eBay for the new fob, I had no idea you could just swap motherboards. I thought I was just going to have new buttons on the front because mine and my families buttons have all broken off by now. It was great to be able to just replace basically everything. Everyone needs to know about this trick for every car. Not kidding at all, $240 for a straight up replacement. Thank goodness I stopped my dad from doing that because of broken buttons.

My car (Kia soul 2012) does not have a chip in the key. I’ve replaced several keys for this vehicle, and there is no chip present.
Some vehicles do have chips, but look in the comments, many people have been successful with this method. You may have to do some research on your vehicle to see if a chip is present.
I hope this helps and saves you a ton of money!! Keep me posted!
