    Speaking as a mixed race black and white woman, I’ve straightened my hair purely for the fact that I find it easier to brush out every day. Nothing to do with me wanting to be more westernised. I find it doesn’t tangle as easily when it’s straight. In fact all the women I looked to for influence when I was growing up were black and mixed race women. Ok so everyone in these comments is just going to be in denial of the fact that there is a stigma amongst certain black cultures which says ‘bad hair’ and praises looser straiter hair. In my country, Jamaica, many women will openly admit they want to have straight hair, the majority of school girls have relaxed hair. Where does this really come from? Maybe the truth hurts to these people in the comments but the cause of this culture is from trying to imitate western beauty standards which idolise straight hair. The self hatred is real.
    Yes this girl is coming across badly when she’s telling black women they want to imitate her. But that doesn’t mean she’s wrong about the underlying cause of black culture idolising straight hair. If you need proof watch some ‘hair journey’ videos on CZcams and see how many black women grew up being made to feel their hair is ‘difficult’ or ‘needs doing’ or ‘can’t be worn loose’. It would be a positive move if culture praised natural hair and embraced it more, so she’s not wrong tbh.
    I think all women are held to an impossible beauty standard that hybrids extreme features from many races so one person can’t possibly fit the ideal standard in all ways. So we can’t really blame any woman for trying to meet the standard whichever race they are from.

    I think she kinda summed up her point of view when she said she’s a naturalist, that everything natural = good n everything unnatural = bad
    While I’d personally say the worlds a little more nuanced then that, it’s not a horrible point of view n not entirely wrong
    im all for anyone of any ethnicities to embrace their natural roots
    N while I’d certainly agree that throughout the ages, people and ethnicities have been suppressed and “westernised” unwillingly or by choice or both
    The only thing I’d argue is does that really apply to today in this day n age
    I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head when you said it’s boxing people into boxes, that black people should only embrace certain traits n shit from their own culture to the point it makes them a outlier, to the culture they was also born n raised in (western culture), but yeah it’s like if a black women wants to embrace her natural roots and traits, completely fine, more power to her, if a black women has straightened hair, or stuff that would be considered unnatural because she wants to experiment or just cus she likes it, who cares, if they like it n feel they look good, who gives a shit

    @RiaDonita Před 14 dny

    See, black women. Your voice is powerful. That’s why you need to be careful what you present as discussion. I’m going to be honest, here and I want to create scope for discussion.
    Black women, certain conversations ought to be had amongst yourselves. Don’t make it available for the public to chip in to. I say this because black women started the over-politicisation of natural hair and policing other black women on how to preserve their authenticity. I understand that it’s a response to Eurocentric beauty standards, but many black women unintentionally end up reducing themselves to pieces of keratin growing out of their scalp. Black women, you are not your hair. You are not your skin colour. You are a complex creation like everyone else who has the right to explore your identity.
    The issue is, when these discussions about our identity become frequent talking points, other races of women are watching/listening too. Those women who think they know us, like this weird one in the video, begin to regurgitate the same points, but with the intention to get us to “know our place”. They’re not concerned about our identity issues at all. Many of them are actually threatened by the many different facets our femininity comes in. We’re extremely versatile with our looks. We wear it natural or fake. They don’t always have the room to do the same. Why do black women always have the responsibility to have political motivation behind their identity? If a black woman wears a wig/relaxes her hair, why is it not ever seen as exploration? White women who wear braids (which tbh I’m fine with) don’t ever get accused of the same thing. They’re literally trying to force you to accept a version of femininity that they think is conducive to you based on your phenotype. Other women have room to explore their identities. They prop these women up on their struggling podcasts to talk wass about women they’re secretly competing with. They must be because why would you talk about other women you don’t identify with, especially if one of them isn’t there to provide a rebuttal to some of your misunderstandings about black female identity?
    I also think the timing of this podcast episode is weird considering that the black wife effect has swept social media with other races men: white, Latino, Asian-becoming more vocal about the positive aspects of black female identity, beauty and desirability. I think this is an underhanded way of trying to shift the discussion about black women back to a denigrating space. It’s being presented to us so strategically. It’s an annoyed response to black women shifting the paradigms of desirability and dating. Her criticism goes deeper than what most of us are thinking.

    I think it is totally up to the woman whatever race she is to style her hair however she wishes. But I do take her points that western media can influence beauty standards where afro hair or darker skin is not celebrated enough. Look at skin bleaching...it's been indoctrinated from slavery and colonisation that to look at 'white' as possible is a survival tactic to fit in with society. Why does colorism exist???Look at light skinned black actresses that tried to pass as 'white' back in the day to get employment in Hollywood. They straightened their hair. Look at Megan Markle. How she tries to fit. She has afro hair. By how would that go down with the royal family if she had her afro? But not every person thinks this deeply about the influence of media and history on today's beauty standards. I do think afro hair is beautiful but if a black woman wants to straighten it...that's her perogative.

There's dark skinned Indian people who have the most beautiful straight hair, there are people of Afro-descent mixed with Indian who are dark skinned. May be some women like to straighten their hair as a style, and like to see how long their hair is. As Afro-coily and Afro-curly hair can get shrinkage or curl up, so you cannot always see how long the length is...
