Peharps, but the " story" is a big nope ... that whole music-hating family BS makes absolutely no sense ... especially with the fact Coco kept all the things related to her father but still let her daughter and the next generation in this state ... Seriously, Miguel is not inbred, his mum came from another family before being part of this, but like the others in-law they all accept this stupid "no music " mindset. It make no sense ... And don't make me talk about Imelda, she is dead, but she still wanna mess with her family's mindset ... Sure, If she was understanding of that fact, the story won't happened, because Miguel would have return without resolving the mystery, but It's always so frustrating for a story to only revolve around " Character A does a stupid and incoherent thing" for the plot ...

In case you guys didn't notice but the first time we meet Hector he doesn't have shoes but at the end of the movie when he crosses the flower bridge with CoCo he has shoes on because the rest of the family accepted him back in their family. As their family legacy was making shoes they made him a pair when they allowed him back in their family ❤
The first time I saw this movie I had just moved into a new apartment with 2 roommates. We had nothing unpacked yet and sat around an empty living room the first night watching Coco sitting on the floor. By the end of the movie it had a group of full grown adults in tears.

Fun fact: at Ernesto de la Cruz’s party, many Mexican icons of music/entertainment that have passed are present. Disney paying tribute to them was a beautiful thing because they didn’t have to do that.

What I like about the “remember me” song was how different the two versions are. De La Cruz had the lyrics but when he sang it it was upbeat. When it was actually intended as a lullaby for coco and is sung softer.
I love this movie and it truly inspired me. I moved to Mexico 5 years ago. After being here a year, a little chihuahua would come begging for food everyday. We became best buddies. Months later he came one day dragging a pup of about two months. Over the next year the chihuahua (Bubba) mentored the pup (Boo Boo). Bubba crossed the Rainbow Bridge when he was hit by a car. That year I made my first ofrenda. I didn’t have actual photos, so I made a slideshow of Bubba on an iPad and used that. The next year I did it again, but included another slideshow featuring my relatives. Boo Boo is still with me. Coco is touching, funny, great all around!!

Ngl, I cried like a baby when Miguel started singing to Coco in the end... That voice actor is phenomenal.
This movie changed culture. My family in Mexico were so touched by this movie, some of them even started celebrating Dia de los Muertos in the traditional way afterwards. This was true all over the country, I was pretty amazed to see how many people it affected. The movie is great on its own, but for what it did for Mexican culture, I rank it as a top tier movie.
If I had a lineup of all the Pixar movies, I'd have a hard time putting this one anywhere besides number 1

I don't know how y'all weren't in tears when Coco started singing Remember Me. Such a beautiful, emotional scene. I get emotional every time I see it. So beautiful.
From a cultural standpoint, Coco means the world to me. The sheer respect for Mexican culture in this movie is just incredible. The music, the food & the preparations for The Day Of The Dead. The culture itself is part of who I am and it's very important, as is the message of the importance of family. Also, the customs agent in The Land Of The Dead was portrayed by funnyman Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias.
As a mexican myself, we accept Holden Hardman as a Mexican. His birthplace is officially the great Mexican state of Yucatán.
I’m Asian American and I always appreciated how Mexicans similarly engage in rituals of ancestor worship. Growing up in the US, I always felt weird that ancestor veneration and filial piety aren’t as big here with Americans.
Speaking of Mexicans and Latin Americans , they really have a mix of traditional indigenous heritage culture and Christianity.
@acdragonrider The Spanish wanted to intermix a lot, they didn't just conquer. Part of their goal was to mix culture, religion and even ethnicity to integrate better. That's part of the reason as to why you see such a blend. Unfortunately there was some destruction of temples, texts and some other things so it wasn't a perfect match.
*Part of the reason as to why Catholicism mixed well was due to the saints, they could be analogous to the pantheons already in place.

My Peruvian grandmother who raised me, died the weekend before this film came out, "I wanna go to the movies" being her last words to me.. it was Pixar's first Latino story, so I was anticipating this, and wanting to honor her request, I went opening night with family.. Did NOT know Coco was the grandmother and when she died at the end, I LOST IT!! 😭 "it was so beautiful!!" I struggled through soaked eyes.. truly a great film that hits home for me..

This movie came out when my grandmother passed away so as a Mexican American boy who also loves playing music This movie hit so hard still does whenever I watch it
I would say that you don't have to worry about cultural appropriation or cancelation from Mexican fans. We know your intentions are of admiration, so we really appreciate that. Mexicans have the saying "Mexicans are born wherever they want" meaning that if you feel Mexican inside, then the Mexican people will consider you a Mexican no matter where you're from. So, if you wanna wear a sombrero or dress like a mariachi, you should!! Feel free to pain your face like they do for the day of the dead if you want to as well. Really enjoy your content brother. keep it up!

I loved it when Miguel tries to do his mariachi scream but can't because he's never done it before like when Simba tried to roar at the Hyenas for the first time.
One of the few movies to actually make me weep. Not cry, weep.
one detail I like to interpret is the spirit animal for the Rivera family is very big because it symbolizes how strong their family bond is, the more stronger the more bigger it is which connects back to pepita being the one to throw Ernesto to the bell, meanwhile Ernesto has one but its very small and it shows how little he cares about his family as he didn't even know about Miguel and just went along with it.
Holden from what I remember you saying, you played in a mariachi band as a kid, went to a Spanish speaking church, and grew up in a hispanic household. You are probably more educated about hispanic culture than these people who would try to cancel you. We are honored to have Hector Hombreduro on our side!
This movie and blue beetle and the book of life and other movies bringing Mexican culture into main stream for more ppl go look at really makes me happy that they make great stories with these movies

My all time favorite animated movie. I'm half Spanish and my mom passed from cancer few yrs before this movie came out..when I watched it I was in tears duing so many scenes. Amazing movie. 10 out of 10!

This movie is the only other Pixar film that reaches the level of emotion that UP did for me. Absolutely adore this film.
Fun fact: The dog can be with them since it is said that in the pre-Hispanic era of Mexico that breed of dogs (Xoloizcuintle)had the mission of guiding the spirits to the Mictlan( which is that afterlife place) and I think That’s very cool

Holden, as a member of the Mexican delegation I am confirm that
1) you will NOT be canceled for buying sombrero during your vacation in Mexico. We would’ve canceled half of the US if that were true. As long as you’re not being disrespectful there’s nothing wrong with that.
2) I grew up in a private catholic school in Mexico and I can 200% confirm that the church is a-ok with the Day of the Dead celebrations. They actually embrace the day and think it doesn’t go against catholic teachings at all. They even encouraged us to make Day of the Dead altars with ofrendas in honor of our dead. It was actually Halloween the day they were iffy about! They discouraged observing that day in favor of day of the dead more since they were so close together (Nov 2nd vs Oct 31st).

PS: this movie made me ugly cry in the theater and havent watched it again because I don’t wanna cry again, not because I didn’t like it (quite the contrary!). This and Inside Out are the two Pixar GOATs.
As a Mexican I declare holden as a Mexican
I first saw this in 2018. My wife fell asleep in my arms while watching and I was absolutely bawling at the end. My wife woke up and asked what was wrong and I said nothing was wrong.
A year later we had our first son and when he was about 1.5 years old, he discovered this movie and watched it on repeat for about…. 6 months and we watched it as a family so many times and never got sick of it. I can recite most of the movie’s lines and lyrics lol.
Solid 10/10 for me as well.
The ending, every time, gets to me. It always hits so hard.
So long as he has a love for our culture, I'm okay with Holden being an honorary Mexican 😂

One detail I like, is that being forgotten in coco is almost identical to how it looks when bingbong in inside out is forgotten. Also would love to see you guys react to the book of life, since you guys liked coco so much.

This movie always makes me cry. My mom passed with Lewy Body Dementia on 2/2/22 and even before she passed this movie always made me remember her. It hurts every day without her, and our whole family basically fell apart without her.

You all should visit San Antonio. So much Mexican culture and history (and top tier tacos!). If you come around Halloween, they have dia de los muertos events. The culture is rich. The history is a bit White washed by Texas politics but if you do your own research, the stories are amazing. The Alamo, the missions, the museums… it’s great. And South Padre island is beautiful but it is 4 hours from San Antonio

Before photos were created, Ofrendas had all the other elements like food, drinks, colorful skulls made of sugar, chocolate, personal object that were owned by the deceased and of course chopped china paper of all colors (like the ones in the opening scene).
To identify who was the Ofrenda intended to, instead of the photos they would simply write the name in paper or spell it out in the ground using Cempasúchitl (orange or yellow Marigold flower petals)
Coco & Inside Out are 2 of Pixar’s best movies of all time, and deserve to be in the talks of the greatest animated movies of all time

This movie is incredible, funny and emotional. I just love it.
My favorite Ester Egg in this movie is that the conductor of the orchestra at de la Cruz's final performance is modeled after the composer of the film, who also wrote the scores for Inside Out, The Incredibles 1 and 2, and Up, Michael Giacchino.
Stone Cold Steve Austin over here with NO REACTION when Coco started singing!! Everyone ik, including me, balled our eyes out! Even my bf who doesn't like to show his emotions! I'm freakin astonished and surprisingly impressed
The reason Dante has the ability to interact with the underworld is because he is a Xoloitzcuintle, a Mexican dog breed descendant of Anubis the Egyptian god of death. Xolos are supposed to guide their owners to cross to the underworld when they die, that's why Dante was able to go with Miguel, even tho he didn't even touch the guitar.
Also, I'm surprised by how much Holden knows about Mexican culture 👏
Coco reminds me a lot of The Book of Life, which I recommend reacting to. It's a lot similar to Coco, and both have to do with the afterlife.

It makes me cry every time Bcs on my moms moms side we are Mexican I grew up being called mijo all the time by my grandma and great grandparents on her side and now they all passed which makes me feel so much pain and happiness watching this movie

My nephews are half Mexican. This movie makes me think of them. I absolutely love this movie. A 10/10 is appropriate score for me.
11:39 The dog (Dante) can enter the world of the dead, because it is from a breed called xoloitzcuintle, which in turn has a great connection with death in our country. On the other hand, the name Dante was not given to him by chance, but by the writer Dante Alliyeri, whose greatest work is The Divine Comedy, which deals with how he travels through the world of the dead, to be more exact. Hell.
Is Coco realising and singing for me. That part breaks me every single time. It reminds me of my grandma when she sang in a lucid moment.

"What they used to put in ofrendas before photos"
Easy: nothing... in urban areas. The tradition of the ofrenda is to honor the memory of the deceased, so it's the honoring that "calls" the spirit home, not the picture... but that doesn't work much to forward conflict in the story, so the presence of photos became the main issue XD.
In some of the most traditional celebrations, you put the ofrenda not only in the house, but you go to the cemetery to decorate the grave and have dinner beside the tombstone and spend all night there (a practice partially seen in the film, that's why there is a lot of people in the cemetery at night). In a different variation celebrated in the region you recently visited (south of Mexico), bones are unearthed, cleaned, dressed and reburied as part of the the celebration and honoring of the dead.
So, yeah, photos are not "a must"; but help with memory.
"Who is also me!"
Frida Kahlo's joke is so perfectly crafted because all his work was biographic and self-referential. And, since she loved surrealism, it has a lot of WTF elements (if you are more into the formal side of art, rather than making sense of why there are monkeys with human heads).
Many may have mentioned her husband, Diego Rivera, does a cameo in the film (he is the painter in the "naked" model scene); what many don't mention is that Frida had quite a tormented life, including what we could describe today as a very toxic marriage to Rivera (he would cheat with his models, she would cheat with friends, he would cheat with Kahlo's sister, then she would steal some of his lovers and even, probably, sleep with one of Rivera's favorite political icons... yeah, while they had very passionate moments togheter, they also had very passionate and abusive fights).
On top of that she lived with chronic pain from a trolley accident in her youth that left her with a broken back that never healed properly (due to limitations of medicine at the time of the accident, she had to wear eventually a casted corset to keep her back in shape), a badly healed broken leg (that left her with a permanent limp) and, basically, made her unable to have children. No wonder all this personal anguish and pain ended up being the material for constant self references in her art.
"Alejibres!/Alebrijes"
Nice try, Holden; needs to be polished a bit XD. Oddly enough: alebrijes are not spirit guides (apparently) and they are a recent addition to mexican culture. You see, they were introduced as little sculptures during the 1930's.
The story goes like this: Pedro Linares López, a cardboard collector and artist, got pretty sick one day in 1936. He got a fever so severe he got delirious and during this "fever dream" he saw beings that were the mixture of different animals, with odd colors, designs and proportions. These animals could speak and were saying (in chorus) the same word: "Alebrijes!".
Pedro recovered and began to make cardboard and paper sculptures of the animals he had seen, and some other beings he began to imagine; the alebrijes grew in popularity to the point an entired documentary was produced in 1975, cementing the position of alebrijes as part of mexican lore and culture (by that time, celebrities the size of Diego Rivera, asked Pedro to create specific designs, in different sizes). Pedro Linares López would eventually die in 1992; leaving behind an entire new "genre" of popular art, open to be explored and expanded by others.
"The dramatic sip"
Hahaha; I almost choke with that (sorry if that was unintentional and the highlight was that Holden almost died for drinking the last bit of the drink)... But, for me it felt like acting a very suspicious sip to get away of spoilers; the only thing it lacked was some dramatic telenovela music XD.
"I feel great affinity for hispanic culture..."
Too bad it can't be done for the channel, but it would be fun to see Holden reacting to some classic black and white mariachi and luchador films (fun fact, and I guess that's already commented everywhere, the film is full of references to mexican films, and mexican celebrities from around the 1950's and 1960's). Cheesy as they come, full of songs and stereotypes... some of that entertainment is missed (surprisingly, some were quite daring in the topics they touched and the creativity they used to make some visual tricks possible; we lost some of that when mexican film industry entered into the 1970's).
"Universally loved"
Yeah... about that... XD. Just kidding, it is; but Coco almost became the target of some groups due to some unfounded gossips while the movie was being made: tabloids and not very well informed people imagined that, since Disney was a gigant corporation working on a film around the Day of the Dead, that they would eventually copyright ALL Day of the Dead and prevent mexicans from celebrating it unless royalties were paid. It's a trend I hate, but we mexicans sometimes like cheap excuses to say we are abused by the United States (we have been and we still are, but not by copyrighting everything); another rumor says we have to pay an american record label to use our National Anthem.
Time and again we have to debunk (to those still loving the gossip) that copyright doesn't work that way and the celebration was never in any danger of being "privately owned".

First time I watched this, I cried in multiple spots, the first being told about the final death and then at the end obviously. I never thought about a final death and this movie opened up my mind and it made me depressed that eventually, we all get forgotten about, unless you have a big presence online, important people in history, movies, etc..
Besides the Kung Fu Panda films, Coco and Moana were the only newer Animated Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks movies I went "I want to see that!" Grandma Coco reminds me of my own Grandma Miguel singing to her at the end always makes me cry.

He retired from Pixar not long after the film’s release. So it’s good that his career ended with a bang

Coco used to be my absolute number 1 favorite animated movie, which has only been surpassed by Encanto! Both taking place in Latin America, funnily enough.
Of course, since Encanto is a Disney production, Coco remains my favorite Pixar movie. It even inspired me to pick up playing guitar!

15:10 that but universally vibrant colors signifies life where gloomy colors (dark, grey, brown, etc) signifies death. Day of thr dead they still maintain those vibrant colors to keep spirits up for the living and dead. It’s a day to be happy then be sad.
