The notion that you need an archtop and humbuckers for a good jazz sound is ridiculous. Solidbody guitars can sound as good as any archtop. The pickups and electronics have more to do with the sound than anything else. A solidbody guitar with a bolt-on neck that has Dynasonics or P-90's played through a tube amp can sound as good as any archtop. The same goes for a Tele, a Jaguar or Jazzmaster.
@@dwightbernheimer331 IMO most people are followers and conformists. I lived in a university town in the midwest. It was supposed to be full of openminded people and I can't tell you how many times I'd gone to a bar that was frequented by artists and writers only to see how narrowminded most of these people were. This was back when Seattle bands were all the rage. I can't count how many times I had one of these assholes take one look at me and assume I was uncool because I had short hair and didn't wear an army field jacket or whatever the hipster uniform of the day was. I may have had a clean cut, conservative appearance but it had no bearing on what kind of person I was. I was a thousand times more openminded, wild and colorful than they could have imagined. Many of these people would probably like me but avoid being seen with me for fear of what their supposedly hip friends might think. The point is that people who are seen as independent, openminded and transgressive are often anything but when you scratch the surface. A lot of them are conservative, unimaginative and more mindful of what others think of them than they would have you believe. Jazz snobs are no different. I remember seeing an interview with Steve Allen where he explained how he once made fools of a bunch of jazz music critics. He noticed that they routinely trashed his music. If I recall this correctly, he re-released an album of his with a name and a photo that would lead you to think the album was released by a black man and the same critics who had previously trashed that album were now praising it. I suspect you could do something similar with a bunch of archtop enthusiasts--record a whole album with nothing but a Tele or a Les Paul with P-90's, tell them you used an archtop with humbuckers and then see how many are fooled. I would bet that most of them would be none the wiser.
@@dwightbernheimer331 I'm glad I could give you some moral support. It was nice to see someone who shared my opinion on this. Have a great week and a Happy New Year.
Amazing thing about the tele-you can get so many different jazz sounds from it. there is no tele jazz sound-there are dozens of them-but much of the sound comes-from the right hand. Bickert-the father of jazz tele-had 5 or 6 distinct sounds depending on the multitude of factors that go into playing one: amp, guitar-settings, strings, pick, placement of picking etc. Great instrument. Love my 66. Great job-lovely playing.
Please choose Jesus, so that your AFTER-life isn't worse than your "bad life" here on earth. God has a glorious home waiting for you, if you choose Jesus!
Cool technique with bending the harmonics, never heard that being used! I knew you could bend behind the nut, but hadn’t considered its application with harmonics
Phenomenally beautiful musicianship, and watching your video, along with a few others today, has completely changed my idea of what a "Jazz guitar" should be. After selling all my guitars a few years ago, I'll be looking for a Tele'.
I just purchased a boutique '53 Tele vintage butterscotch / black guard and had the builder specifically select pickups for tele jazz. the guitar is unbelievable. and this tune is high on my list to reproduce. Your playing is really top shelf. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your kind comments! Darn That Dream is composed by Jimmy Van Hausen. Luckily I don't sing on this video but lyrics are by Eddie DeLange ; ) Miles Davis had nice vocal version of this song.
Great guitar work, and marvelous tone. Have been a Telecaster fancier since I saw my first Esquire, back in 1959; so I am not surprised at what a wonderful sound this is!
Sweet sound you have there . i just bought a squier pine model tele and its a good price and great sound. Mind you i cant play it as sweet as you do. Ill keep at it.
I use Elixir 010-046 strings mostly, I think there is 011 set on this guitar (previous owner had used those, but I'll change Elixir 010 set on this one, when it's time. Those 011's are little bit hard for bending strings, and I use Teles mostly for country guitar stuff)
This makes me want to buy the album. Perfect example that tone and the sound of music lies between the players brain and his hands or mouth in the case of brass and woodwinds.
@@moreorlesslikeso Ed used the same Telecaster from the early 1970s through 2000. He put the humbucker in around 1978, so all of his work on Concord Records has the humbucker. But, one of the most widely heard sessions he ever played on, "Pure Desmond", was recorded in 1974 with the original neck pickup, and of course he sounds fantastic on that record. His earliest solo records on Canadian labels in 76-77 also have the single-coil. Not that it really matters that much, only pointing it out to make the point that his tone was almost all in his fingers and amp settings.
Let's see. 4 different Teles from the 60's and 70's, including one I put a Gibson humbucker in at the neck, and 2 silver face twins, one with REAL JBL's (not those orange backed things). I love Teles and Twins.......but never thought I could get that sound out of one. Good work. What's your secret? (like you'd ever share, right? ha ha) Thanks for posting.
great playing brother! we're all reaching for the highest heights regardless of fame or stature but you're cuttin' a mean path for yourself. subscribed to show support!
One incredible tone AND playing! Wow! If you don't mind I'd like to know your set! I use D'ddario 0.11 on my Tely AND roll off the tone a little but your sound Is great. Congrats!
Telecasters with that jazz neck pick up sound are one of the best things in life (about music.)
Just the other day I saw the same comment on some Ted Bickert video, was that you? :)
It's a very specific sound.... I hardly ever use my bridge pickup on my Tele.... Why use it when such beauty comes from the other side?
Absolutely stunning version of Darn That Dream. Ted Greene would be proud!
I have been an advocate for decades, of jazz played on a Telecaster. Thank you for posting...

Congrats, very very nice! It's your own guitar arrangement? it sounds so great. Do you have a score of it? best!
I think you meant Chet Baker. I don't think Miles ever sang on anything. I could be wrong, though...
