Unfortunately most people knows the history of Cuba by Hollywood , specially
by the Godfather , showing the mafia ruling Cuba, this is widely exaggerated
they owned 4 casinos, they did not owned the biggest one Tropicana which was owned by a Cuban. Today any small island in the Caribbean has more casinos
than Cuba at that time and I never heard anybody crying mafia. The influence of the casinos was insignificant compare with the biggest industries , agriculture
    and mining.

Habana, a beautiful, modern city, imbued with its own unique Cuban taste and flavor, as opposed to the third world wreck it exhibits today. Only the shell remains of a once vibrant, flourishing, cosmopolitan city. It's on life support now.

It's very depressing to see this film of a busy, bustling Havana and then see films of the city today. Castro and his regime have ruined this once-great city and country. Shame on him and his cronies. By the way, the new Chevrolet cars being sold at the dealership are 1954 models so this film is probably from late-1953 or sometime in 1954. Sadly most of these cars are still being driven by Havana residents. One thing though. That fact shows how good American cars once were.

Cuba was a dog puppy owned by Spain for 400 years of imperialism!!
Then America finally reacted upon the Monroe doctrine that wanted all European powers out of the American hemisphere. This bring about the war between Spain and America. America wins the war and takes over Cuba. In the mid 20th century in comes the puppet Batista!! So there was no independent Cuba. All it's resources such as Sugar, coffee and tabacco was totally controlled by America!! So Cuba went from being owned by Spain then America!! I don't blame Fidel!!

@@phillyguy2157 I think you should read about the Cubans in the America, what we have done in every profession, their part in American companies, just to tell you a few, Coca-Cola previous president was a Cuban, Pepsi-cola world president is a Cuban now retired, Kellogs also had a Cuban president. The Cuban participation in the independence war when Washington was broke, had no money to continue the war, Cuba sent a large amount of money and Cap Miralle with 4,000 soldiers to help to fight in the war. The first Conquistadors who landed in the Tampa and St Agustin Florida was from Cuba. Cuba was the capital of Spain in the Americas that is why Havana in the 1700’s was a very cultural city with many theaters, good schools, and there were many good musicians and composers. Very advance in the 1800’s slave emancipation, if the children of slaves had talent for music they sent them to study in Europe. In the 1800’s there was not a city in the US with art and an active cultural life as in Cuba.
The Cubans fought for their freedom in the 1800’s many years, many prominent Cubans came to US in exile to Philadelphia and New York. The first social worker who helped in New York was father Varela. At the end of Cuba’s independence war the American Government (and powerful Hurst) interfere by provoking with an explotion of a ship in Havana to get in the war. US always had an eye looking at Cuba they wanted to belong to US, but there were real Cuban patriots who were determined to be independent and not belong to US. After 2 years of American intervention Cuba was free. In the next 30 years Cuba was able to pay all debts to US and get back all businesses and properties the Americans took on the 2 years intervention.
Cuba was nationalized and had industries that did not need to depend on US, that did no make US government happy about, they always wanted to own Cuba and interfere behind the scenes in politics, such an extreme that Cuba has the Castro communists regime because they betrayed Batista (who many people knew was a communist) and helped Castro to gain power. US said they only would support Castro as president.
Just to have an idea how advanced was Cuba first telephones in the world were in Philadelphia and Cuba electricity on the streets first than any Latín American country, color tv and live tv programs before US. We had free education, minimum payment to have health insurance, also great public hospitals “free health care” including one children’s hospital. Cuba make propaganda of health care and education that is a lie. The Cubans have deplorable hospitals.
You can verify how US interfered and put Castro in power. There is video in youtube called. “US put Castro in power” where Smith who was the last American diplomat in Cuba tells exactly how it happened.
Cuba was among the 3 most advanced countries in Latin America, the currency had the same value as the dollar, sometimes 5 cents higher. The new Cadillac’s exhibit every year was in Cuba because so many Cadillacs were sold every year in Cuba.
This documentary is excellent, and many people and countries envied what Cuba was. We had and advanced republic made by the Cubans in a short time 1902-1958
We came to Miami as “political exiles” not immigrants, we made Miami in the 60’s and 70’s from sleepy town without lights on the streets and began the banking and businesses with Latin America which made it international and put it in the map.
