    Hard to believe it’s been over five years since Nerdist Presents: The Hive debuted at Fantastic Fest, but we’re still wondering if there are any NON-evil Hive minds in real life?? Kyle explores real life collective intelligence and swarm science, and it’s totally not about influencers and social media. Never before seen on the Because Science Channel!

      I think, our mind is hybrid (social):
      - some of it is individual (egoistic thoughts, our private needs, etc...) [the id]
      - but a huge chunk is similar to a hive mind (memes, cultures, stereotypes, crowd mentality, shared common knowledge, how we see ourselves in relation with the society or our friends, etc...) [the super-ego] ...and the ego, our conscious decision maker, always somewhere between those two polar opposites...
      We can easily communicate and perform group actions (for the common good), while retaining our sense of self importance, and always trying to get something beneficial out of these actions for our own ends.

      It’s not a hivemind, as a hivemind congruently works as a unit efficiently... New artist, nice. The caricatures are cool.
    I think the problem with hive minds in fiction is they're always considered heartless, soulless, and relentless evil creatures. The Borg for example don't show compassion or remorse, and they attempt to assimilate everything. But both TNG and Voyager show hive examples (from the Borg, even, albeit disassociated Borg) where they do show compassion. The issue isn't that they're evil though, they're just different from human perceptions of morality. The Borg are technically doing a good thing from their perspective: Removing racial barriers, consolidating technology and knowledge, and removing issues like death and hunger. Their method however is the removal of individuality, because different points of view breed differences of opinion, and discord like that breeds anarchy.
    In theories put forth in less malicious forms of hive intelligence via fiction, a communal intelligence does not necessarily mean the death of the self, but it would be difficult to define where your own voice ends and others begin after months or years in the collective. Some fiction and games (like Hic Svnt Dracones) posit that long term collective participants suffer when being disconnected from the hive, taking hours to days to reassert their own personalities (depending on how long they were in) in addition to coming to terms with the silence and distance with their counterparts. Likewise being a part of a collective has the (again theoretical) inherent benefit of not only nigh-instant communication of whole ideas initially, but eventually an intrinsic knowledge of the ideas of the others within the collective as the barriers of the self break down. Not just learning about an idea from someone else, but knowing that idea as if it was your own.

Just look at Stellaris, so long as they're not a devouring swarm a hive mind can be very friendly and if both they and another empire have achieved genetic ascension, they can even integrate with each other! You ever notice at a large store with a dozen plus registers people head to the register in clumps? How as a few people get in line more and more folks join them. Soon you hear, "blah blah blah to checkout.... " Next the isles in the store thin out as more shoppers come in & the cycle starts over as the lines thin out. Some even will see a long line and go look around the store to kill a few minutes in hopes the lines will die down.

    Maybe you can help me with this analogy: The way that an OVERLY logical or rational individual is likely to develop a ruthless focus,many "minds" compiled, can lack or skip processing stages,in pursuit of a goal or simply survival. It may APPEAR evil due to the emotional components being abridged or all out omitted.
    I think the duration and fortitude of a hivemind state depends on the foundation or catalyst. One began off of emotional trauma is more likely to be weaker than one cultivated through logic and rational choice. Probably why the judicial system works AT ALL.

    The scary thing is, you don't need telepathy to make a hive mind. You just need the ability to coordinate and a common goal. If the goal of your space bugs is to eat everything, and they eat everything on their planet, what's next? If we assume they have some level of intelligence, maybe rat- or bird-level, and a method of communication so that ideas can be attacked by the masses in the same way as food, then a spaceship isn't out of the question. And once you have that...we're all doomed.

    I Feel we in Our Marden days we have a kind of a Virtual Hive Mind where On Social Media or wherever when someone has a Opinion of something we almost feel Obligated to have the same Opinion of that Person even if we have a Deferent Opinion of that very something, or that if another person has a Deferent Opinion than another person we would feel that Urge to Gang Up on the person that had that Deferent Opinion, on what we Call 'Cyber Bullying' and I Believe that is where 'Online Trolling' comes from. for example if the Majority Likes a Certain Movie and I Don't More than Likely I would Be Ganged Up and Cyber Bullied and Troll, all the while No One would Come to my aid or Defence, for they Too Feared of being Cyber Bullied and Trolled Online. And Those Making me An Even an Easier Target.

      @JasonWW2000 Před 4 lety +1

      Are you asking why bikes stay upright pretty easy? You'll notice that bikes in motion stay upright easier than bikes at rest. When in motion the wheels create a gyroscopic effect which resists falling over. The wheels want to stay vertical. You still need to maintain balance, but staying upright is a lot easier moving than stopped.

    What is this new culture movement of calling each other “hiveminded”when you don’t even know someone...lol I been told that I am hivemind and yet, pretty sure, I am myself, I have no friends, so it is like who and how can you compare someone you don’t know to random other people, which begs the question, do people who call anyone hivemind have any sense of attention to detail? Lol like last time I was called hivemind, it was because I was literally being considerate... lol like seriously? You’re complaining about someone trying to be nice to you? Wtf is wrong with our race seriously? Lol 😑

      Kiosu Batsu: It's yet another way for the sociopathic to discredit and ignore any position, opinion, or fact that disagrees with their dogma. Pity the poor, close-minded fools who behave so rudely, rather than risk changing their minds about anything. It's more psychological projection, pure and simple.

      @@jamesbizs Because so much of CZcams is about goodwill, content and viewer investment. It's not like normal companies.
