- The New Balance Fresh Foam X Balos is a brand new shoe from New Balance and the Fleet Feet Review Team got their hands on it early.
The Balos mixes race day and everyday training with a PEBA-blended midsole foam, FreshFoam geometry, a highly rockered shape and a side-to-side camber that propels you forward.
This plateless shoe is inherently stable, with high side walls, a wide platform and strategic outsole lugs. An uber-stretchy knit tongue and almost translucent fabric give the upper a premium feel.
With all that tech, the Balos is an early Fleet Feet Review Team favorite. Coming 8/14 to a Fleet Feet near you and to fleetfeet.com.

You buried the lead. If the comparisons are Novablast, Rebel, 1080, why is this shoe $200? It looks like a shoe that might be decently popular at $150.
Thanks for the comment! The cost of the shoe is due to the premium tech used to make it. The PEBA-blended Fresh Foam X gives the Balos a super shoe feel that’s resilient with a higher energy return. The premium creel mesh upper adds to the price point, too. The Fleet Feet review team compares shoes based on the underfoot feel, ride and experience of the shoe, but it can be difficult to find an apples to apples comparison with a new shoe like this one. As a team, we’ll continue to take price into consideration when comparing the shoes to others. - Max, Social Media Manager
@@fleetfeet699 The real comparison should be with the new SC Trainer v3?
How does it compare with the Mizuno Neo Vista?
Been waiting for this show since last year
I have the More V3 and V4 and am looking forward to this. The one concern you mention is the EVA outsole. The More's I have only last about 400km until the rubber wear down and the Fresh Foam (or whatever is the layer beneath the rubber) start showing. NB really need to step up their game in this regard because Adidas/continental and Pumagrip last much longer without comprising grip.
Just wondering why I’d spend more on this when the 1080 is such a good all around shoe?
1080 is too soft to pick up any speed
Then I guess why isn't Rebel a better option? It seems like it's very expensive for someone very very niche.
I haven't owned the 1080 to say personally, but I've never heard anyone say the 1080 is good all around. I've heard it considered near top of the line for recovery, slightly bad for a daily trainer, and useless as a tempo shoe.
The 1080 is a great shoe, but so is the Balos. If you want an elevated 1080 and enjoy a faster and more responsive feel on foot then the Balos makes sense. The Balos is one of my favorite shoes this year and compliments the 1080 well! - Brandon
Would be the shoe for someone who loves the Novablast and wants to run in the Superblast bad, but can't due to they don't offer are a size 14? I am torn between this and the SC Trainer V3 urg.
Oh hi Brandon! Last time I see you was in BITR video, glad to see that you're still doing reviews!
I wonder if he had a falling out with them or fleet feet bought him out - I went in there store in manhattan and they had nothing,I know it’s hard to stock everything but nothing except shoes that are one level down . I know that sounds wacky but a few shoes that are really good. I would sell everybody. I don’t know what it means when someone says a beginner shoe ,put them in a Pegasus because he doesn’t know it sucks.
Is it just a slightly better 1080 or does it make sense to pair it with a 1080 for longer / faster runs. I like the 1080s but I fell like what I am missing in my rotation is a shoe that has more pop and can be good for longer miles.
This is a great question. I think pairing these two makes sense. Let the 1080 eat up the bulk of the miles with the Balos being that shoe that has more pop and is better for longer miles for sure. The good news is both of these shoes are pretty impressive from NB so having both in your lineup would be pretty great. - Brandon
Nice work Brandon! Good to see you popping up elsewhere, appreciate your work.
Much appreciated! - Brandon
Is it breathable? Some of the reviewers says the 1080v13 is hot when u wear for a long time in the hot weather. I wonder if this improves the breathability, better than 1080v13
Will it be available in 4E?
The moustache gap is 🔥
when do they come out? How would you compare these to the. superblast or the recently launched magic speed 4?
Launch date is 8/14 and they feel softer and more of a cruiser while the Superblast is more responsive! - Brandon
Too close to Superblast? Or does it make sense having both, covering easy/rec up to speedier paces?
The Balos and Superblast are both great picks. I can see both fitting into the arsenal. Balos as your uptempo daily trainer and the Superblast as your long run day shoe. - Brandon
How does it compare to the Superblast?
The Superblast is more responsive but the Balos is more of a cruiser! - Brandon
Hi Brandon. What about the stiffness of forefoot. Is it rigid like Superblast or flexible?
Hi! It is softer and more plush than the Superblast. - Brandon
Looks like they had the same idea as Saucony Triumph 22 to me but with an offset more typical for New Balance. About 40mm stack in the heal, neutral but with a very wide stable footprint, and PEBA elements packaged in a daily trainer. I guess the question is whether it feels more similar to the Triumph 22 that is $40 cheaper or, as others have compared, the Superblast at the same $200 price.
I would say it is closer in feel to the Superblast than the Triumph 22. Given the Fresh Foam X and PEBA blend, the shoe is going to be more on the bouncy and fun side. The Balos is also softer than the Superblast and Triumph 22 - Brandon
What’s up with the NB Fresh Foam Tempo?
We haven't heard much about the New Balance Fresh Foam Tempo at this time! - Max
$200 .... 😮
launch date? I hope there will be more color options.
Coming 8/14 to fleetfeet.com.
Would those be as stable as the more v4??
Given the wide base the Balos is very stable! - Brandon
Is this like the vongo? More stability?
Less stability. The Balos is a neutral shoe although due to its wide base there is some inherent stability.
Hi Brandon, I’ve low arch feet, would those work for me?
I think so! But to know for sure go get your foot scanned at a local Fleet Feet store. This will help you become more informed on what shoes are right for you. - Brandon
@@fleetfeet699 thank you ☺️
I though this shoe was the rival of the superblast and not the novablast, what a bummer, well at least we have superblast 2 coming
It still rivals the Superblast as a great trainer! The Balos just falls into a different category of running shoe! - Brandon
Wish they would bring back the beacon!!!
Does the Balos have a carbon plate
No it does not!
This or the SC trainer V3? Seems like they are going in all sorts of directions with their shoes now and these don't look durable at all
Depends if you like more of a 1080 or a rebel. if you lean towards 1080 then you'll lean towards the Balos. If you lean towrards the rebel then the sc trainer
Good question. The Balos is a softer ride than the SC Trainer and it doesn't have a plate. If you are looking for a shoe with a plate then the SC Trainer makes more sense. Both shoes would be great for long run day and picking up the pace. The geometry and tech of the SC Trainer v3 pushes you forward while the Balos is more of a fun and bouncy ride! - Brandon
What is the difference between the Rebel V4
Good question. The Rebel v4 midsole is packed with a responsive and more propulsive FuelCell foam while the Balos uses a softer and more plush Fresh Foam X foam compound. The Balos will also have a more “max-cushion” feel underfoot as the stack height is 38.5mm in the heel and 32.5mm in the forefoot compared to the Rebel v4 which is 30mm in the heel and 24mm in the forefoot. Lastly, the Rebel v4 is lighter lending itself towards the uptempo daily trainer category while the Balos, with the increased stack height, lends itself to a more traditional daily trainer, but with the addition of the aggressive rocker and PEBA-blended Fresh Foam X, can also be used to pick up the pace. - Max
Seems like the Beacon went away to prison for a few years and then came out all jacked!
What is balos?
wait until get discount
I wouldn’t say innovation, but more trying to flood the market with shoes that overlap each other.
It kinda of looks like this is what the 1080 v3 should’ve been.
The Beacon remastered.
It’s not on the website.
Coming August 14th.
