  • We traveled to 15,000 feet in the high Andes to find the Olivaceous Thornbill hummingbird. This bird is one of the highest altitude hummingbirds in existence and conserves energy by feeding and spending much time on the ground feeding on tiny flowers. The Olivaceous Thornbill is adapted to living in very bleak conditions. I would never have believed we would find a hummingbird happy to be up here!

      This one wasn't easy. I am so happy I don't have to go up there again! My oxygen saturation doesn't like being in the 60's.

    Fascinating! I am at a mere 7,000 feet and have seen our black-chinned and broad-tailed buddies in the higher mountains in the region. And I even caught a quick photo of one dining at my snow-covered feeders after a surprise storm in mid-May (snow melted by noon). But what a treat to learn about the tenacious Olivaceous Thornbills! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

    It amazes me how some these miracles can live in such sparse and harsh conditions. They were created tiny, but resilient too!

    It's so cute seeing them on the ground! A lot of people are unaware hummingbirds are even capable of walking, but they are. I know you have video of one, and I've seen at least one do it here on our deck railing. It's like the claim they can't open their beaks like normal birds, which is equally incorrect.

    I can't believe how tiny, and I'm guessing sparse those littlecred flowers are. Keeps them busy and yes...humming lol
    I'm so happy that you were successful in your venture!!
    Thank you Carole, for another great video.

      We had 12 feeders out this year, we had at least 10 plus ruby-throated hummingbirds visiting us daily at our house, I believe the 2 ladies had 2 batches of 2 baby's,we are so very excited for the return next spring!!!

    Hooray - #215! Slowly chipping away at the list of hummingbirds to be photographed and videoed. Other than the beautiful iridescent gorget on the male, this is kind of a drab little bird. 15,000 feet and in the snow! I hope you didn't have any trouble breathing at that altitude?

    • @HummingbirdSpot
      @HummingbirdSpot  Před rokem

      My sat up there is in the mid 60's, but oddly enough I don't have trouble breathing. Walking uphill is very hard. I can feel that my quads aren't getting enough oxygen to work properly! I don't worry about the sat. You don't start losing brain cells until the mid 50's, haha.

    Hi i have a question. how do the insects get into the bottles in your livestream ? please fix it so they don't have to die. thank you very much it's a nice stream

    • @JohnMichaelson
      @JohnMichaelson Před rokem

      How would that be possible and have the hummingbirds still able to access the food? They're going to get in one way or another. I get earwigs in mine through holes that I cannot comprehend how they managed to fit through.

    • @HummingbirdSpot
      @HummingbirdSpot  Před rokem +1

      Those insects are stingless wasps and unfortunately they are small enough to get inside.
