Hello! This video has some audio issues if you are listening using headphones (thank you to those who have pointed it out). I sincerely apologize for the audio, I promise it won't happen again. I also understand that some people disagree with me on the Penelope-Eloise situation that happens in Season 2. I 100% respect your opinion on that plot. If anyone is curious, I have a separate video explaining my thoughts on Penelope. Ultimately, I love the character, but I also want to try and analyze characters with an impartial eye (as best as I can, whether or not I am successful is debatable). It is the second video I ever made so it may not be the best in terms of quality, I may revisit her character after season 3. Whether you agree or disagree, I appreciate you. Thank you to everyone for your feedback!
I think you did a great job on your video! I also agree with you that Colin has indeed been portrayed by Luke Newton to be friendly with Penelope and maybe even wondering if there might one day be more between them. When he denies Penelope to his male friends, he might have been just reluctant that he was interested in ANY woman. You know, guy talk. I'd like to also support your theory because it's obvious that Colin LIKES Penelope! And in Regency times, even correspondence between single men & women was discouraged. Therefore, Colin has probably considered Penelope to be like a sister for many years. It takes time to get beyond that feeling of friendship. So I think the show has been careful to paint a picture of mutual respect & affection between these two. Furthermore, every time Colin has done something to hurt Penelope's feelings, he was responding according to society's expectations as a rather young & unsure gentleman might. Finally, I think the show has set Penelope & Colin up for Season 3 perfectly! One more thing. The chasm between Penelope & Eloise was unavoidable and sets them up for a great story of reconciliation. One last thing. People often mispronounce "ton." It's "tahn," not "tuhn."
A lot of these are Luke’s choices as an actor because he read the book before filming season 1. So he’s been purposely incorporating these little bread crumbs and sprinkling little moments for fans to swoon over. Before I even knew that they were meant to end up together, before I even read Romancing Mister Bridgerton… based on just watching seasons 1 and 2, I was already shipping them. Because the foundation was always there. He’s been an idiot in love from the first episode. And I love that kind of ship.
I wanted to add up to 10:00. Colin danced (+flirted) with half of the women of the ton, yet his friends asked him only about Penelope! 😏. So. They noticed that he treats her differently.
someone said that one of the guys said 'sure' sarcastically at Cloin after saying that he would never dream of courting Penelope, which I found very interesting as they can see that he likes her.
What I got from this video Penelope: a wallflower Also Penelope: catches Colin’s eyes IMMEDIATELY even though she was hiding like the wallflower she is Colin: a big river of DENIAL when it comes to Penelope, but the eyes don’t lie Colin, they don’t lie…
You missing all the time he’s catching his breath. You caught the looks but he’s also catching his breath simultaneously. When he looks at her, he kind of forgets how to breathe for a second He doesn’t realize that he catches his breath when he sees her. The piano singing scene in season one and his return scene in season two. Also, the scene where he spots her and the Hastings ball in season one. The promenade scene after Anthony’s bundled nuptials. When Lady Featherington was talking to Violet. And they looked at each other. He caught his breath then too.
Yes the glances and long stares from each other is like a magnetic pull. He always finds a way to draw near to her and she to him. He’s broken so many society rules with Pen without realizing like writing letters to an unmarried woman that’s not his fiancé, grabbing her hand in even when it’s not to go dance, talking to a woman about gossip and being alone with her multiple times without a chaperone. Imagine when they finally become officially romantic in season 3, many rules will be broken. Polin ❤️
I keep forgetting that even writing letters to someone (even a friend) without being betrothed is breaking the rules. Seeing this comment makes me love them even more.
@gabrielleduplessis7388 although I love Polin, writing letters to her wasn't breaking the rules. There was nothing wrong with a man writing to a family friend. Letters was their only way of communication back then
it was as although their families are known to be friends, back then if an unwed couple were found to be writing letters it was considered scandalous, however due to Penelope being a wallflower and their families only knowing the pair to be friends, neither of the families were shocked when they found this out as Penelopes family simply ignored the possibility because they view her as a wallflower and Colins family simply because they know her to be a friend, not anyone whom he would possibly want to marry. also some rules for fun, Before an engagement, couples could not converse privately or be alone in a room, travel unchaperoned in a carriage, call one another by their first names, correspond with or give gifts to one another, dance more than two sets together on any evening or touch intimately - and that included handshakes. (the correspond part includes writing letters and its funny considering they quite literally break all the rules, in past seasons and the upcoming one) @@giovanalaurence
I always took the “never courting Penelope” comment as “her friendship is so incredibly important to me, I could never jeopardise that by considering courtship with her”. If they were to court and it didn’t work out, not only would he lose a love interest, but a very important friend as well. Luckily everything works out for them in the end 😉🥰
"You don't count" was not the best choice of words but i think what he was trying to say is that she is not a distraction. From his perspective, his goal is to become a better man so it doesn't make sense to swear off the person who actively motivates him and makes him better. The point is to avoid distractions but he doesn't see her as being distracting despite the fact that he literally won't stop seeking her out. Interacting with her is not distracting. its enriching. Plus she spends a lot of time at his house so he literally CANT commit to never speaking to her. She's such a big part of his life and he enjoys her company so much that its not really a promise he can keep. they're too close.
9:14 i love that in this scene, as colin is saying "[...] without a father or husband to protect them.", when he says husband, the frame shows both pen and colin, a slight hint, perhaps!
In the end, I think it is pretty simple. He likes her, but doesn't want to accept it even for himself, because it is embarrassing to love such girl as Penelope. And men can be very cruel among each other, so he was trying to be cool in front of other men and told "of course I would never even think of courting Penelope".
Exactly this! Deep inside he knows he likes her, but because we live in a society, a cruel one at that, we unconsciously have this idea of what is "right" or "wrong" even when it comes to the matter of choosing someone to love. I can't wait for Colin to get a grip and grovel for Pen's love.
He had to grow up in order to truly appreciate what Penn has to offer. I can see him "exploring " other relationships and saying to himself, "She is not as witty as Penn. Not well read as Penn. Doesn't smile at me like Penn does."
Can’t wait for this season and this overanalysis of every Polin scene is exactly what I needed. I’m looking forward to this season the most because it’s a “she fell first, he fell harder” scenario. I think she’s gonna try to move on from colin and step up her game with her new financial independence in the next season. I think she’ll be a woman scorned given Colin’s comments about her to the guys last season, but everyone will realize how special she is once she’s able to dress and act with her own preference. Tbh they didn’t do a very good job making her out to be one of the ugly ducklings of the featheringtons bc her natural beauty shines through even when she’s dressed in unflattering cuts and colors. I love seeing the progression in the second season as she gets more elaborate with her hair and accessories, little things that she’s able to change with her whistledown money. They’re also going to be more grown up this season which will be an improvement. I’m excited to see Pen growing even more and I hope her and Eloise make up early in the season.
I totally agree with you on the ugly duckling point. If she's ugly, then I'm a troll. I guess it's just too difficult to make Nicola unattractive. They would have to do makeup like they did to Charlize Theron in Monster.
The thing is, even in the books she's never been ugly so much as shy and overlooked. Her mom speaks down to her because she's not as thin and conventional as her sisters, but she's never described as any form of ugly.
I just read book 1, and Simon described her as shy and still having traces of baby fat, wearing a poor color choice for her complexion. Then that she was obviously uncomfortable when her mother was singing the praises of her sisters and just basically had nothing to say about her even though Simon asked.
I think Fife wonders why colin is always a round pen and is intrigued by her! I think we may get a seat jealous scene season between fife and pen dancing and Colin watching
@5885 Lord, who asked Colin. Is he cotering Pem? He's actually suspiciously have a lot of screentime in season 2. And he always around Pam or her family. Strange, for someone who friend of Andrew. Foreshadowing, probably? Looks and gossip he gave her. Was it intentionally?
At 5:26 someone pointed out in tiktok that when Colin said "You do not count", he might have meant that he could not swear Penelope off, not that he doesn't see her as a woman. Which I think makes perfect sense, because he could've been so nervous and cornered that he said the wrong thing.
I'm inclined to think that as well, I think he had a "foot in mouth" situation in that moment. He didn't mean it like he said it, but Pen definitely took it to mean "you do not count."
Yes that was my theory as well before lord Deblin was shown that he would go after pen (maybe w bad intentions) bc of the fact that the first male born will get the featherington title
I have to agree the looks. The smiles the slight holding of the breath. The constant looking for her and conversing with her. Even though you say she's your friend. You have to know that people would be looking at how well you guys interact and be thinking that you guys have a understanding. He is so digging Penelope, but I think because she's been his sister's friend all his life and she's not what the ton would consider an advantageous match. He doesn't know what to do with those feelings. And he hasn't going up to do.
I am absolutely amazed by the fact that they included all these things/ managed to build up so much tension and create Polin-scenes; meanwhile having different main characters S1+S2 (Daphne, Anthony). It is all so subtle, romantic, beautiful - gosh I just looveee this show so much :,)
I think he says that whole "not in your wildest dreams, Fife" line because he doesn't want to admit to his friends(and himself) that he's more emotionally invested in a girl rather than wanting to court someone for status, money or casual sex. Despite the fact that he dances with tons of women they notice that whatever he has with Penelope is different and so they're teasing him and he's putting on bravado rather than being sincere since he hasnt even admitted to himself how he feels. He's basically going "no! i dont like her like that! ...i only dream about her morning, noon and night...she means nothing to me, clearly."
no its the way im convinced that colin fully just opened the floodgates for penelopes suitors and he is in for a treat this season when he realizes that everyone is gonna be going after her 💀 (although its bound to be disastrous as the featheringtons are in a very precarious position so Penelope might just end up accepting the first proposal she receives)
Thank you :) I wasn't sure if the video would be too basic because it's primarily me pointing out scenes, but I figured maybe we all need something to hold ourselves over, even if it's not perfect. I'm honing my skills for season 3 so that once it drops, I'll make something really fun for these two.
Fife is Colin's friend, sort of, then if Colin says something about Fife courting her, Fife is going to be like: this is why I asked you, and you said I was good to go
You make a great point! Colin says the line about never courting Pen right on the heels of promising to look out for her and that she is special to him. When you consider that he repeatedly talks about how special their friendship is and how he can share things with her that he clearly cannot share with his family or peers--he doesn't want to court her and risk losing that, he's seen (and experienced) how courtships can go south. It actually makes complete sense.
Penelope is my favorite character in this show, I just wish her romance was more grand than being the childhood friend pining over the boy trope!!! There better be a switch up in this next season where Colin picks up the slack and is desperate 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
Okay Polin stan as well. You did a grear job breaking it down. In the scene with the flowers you notice that he also has them tied with a pink ribbon, the near shade of the pink in Pen's gown. I also think the pauses are him being in awe of his friend's revealations. Just like he discovered her wit, he descovers her wisdom and compassion for others. Colin just doesnt realize these feelings are romantic sdmiration and I beliefe that is because he has nothing else to compare it to. Yes he has sisters, but all his other relationships with young women are frivolous. I cant wait for that anvil to drop on him
Someone pointed something out on another video and I think it’s really important. Even IF Colin meant that he cares too much for Pen to pursue her - he’s a Bridgerton. His words carry incredible weight for the other guys. He didn’t say out loud that he cares for her too much. He just said he’d never. So his words made her undesirable to the other guys. And honestly, the writers are going to have to work a miracle to get me on board with Penelope and Colin (not that I matter).
I think that when he said "I would never dream of courting Penelope" he said that because of the company he was in. During that dance scene where people were watching Colin and Penelope dance Colin didn't want to make Penelope more "desirable" in their eyes. It felt like he wanted her just for himself. It reminded me of S1 and that whole 'lets make Daphne more desirable by courting The Duke of Hastings' plot line. I could be reading way too into it but thats the picture I got when seeing this scene for the first time.
I felt similarly. For me, in that moment with those other men it came across like high school when someone asks you if you have a crush on so-an-so and you just immediately deny. Deny because you're afraid of being picked on, or because you haven't even admitted it to yourself yet. For Colin especially when he is still clearly unsure of his feelings. Up to that point I believe he truly did feel as though she were more of a sister, Eloise's best friend, but not someone he had ever considered courting. I believe after being directly confronted with the question and immediately deflecting with denial, it is a mix of hiding his true feelings as he is figuring them out, and that he is actively throwing them off the scent as it were, so that they might not begin to see her in the same way he does. Also, why on earth would he be so open and honest with those men anyway? Especially after everything that happened with Marina. I feel like he is purposefully keeping this close to his chest if he has recognized what he feels yet. However, I think this will be the catalyst for him to start thinking more clearly about what it is that he does feel for Penelope. After being asked the question so directly, the internal questioning will truly begin only exacerbated by his travel when all he has is time to think on what it is he wants. And we all know, what he wants is Penelope, or at least he will. 😉
I never thought of it this way. It seemed mean spirited but Colin being a Bridgerton, knows that anyone gaining his interested would automatically get the interest of others. The comment of never courting her seemed unusually unkind. Colin has been a standup guy so far even with his brothers, he's never been ungentlemanly.
My analysis of what he said to the guys at the party: he had already just had to save her family from a predatory guy and then told her he would always look after her. I think he told the guys he would never court her he was protecting her from their interest. I don’t think he was jealous or yet in love with her, just protecting his friend.
@@meca2387I believe it is naive thinking that he only wanted to protect Penelope. He just wanted to protect himself from jokes of other men. And men very often tell different stories to a woman they are dating and in a company of other men, when they are gossiping about their partners and other women. So he totally could say Penelope that he will always protect her and 2 min later - to laugh upon her among other men to not to be a black sheep.
It happens in the book too, he says to his brothers that he would never marry Penelope, he said it because his mom was always introducing and mentioning women to him to marry, incluiding Penelope, so he said it, just to make a point, that he was not thinking about marring anyone just because his mom say so. Colin never saw Penelope as a woman since they met in 1812 until 1824 in the books, when he came back from one of his trips. He was 33, Penelope was 28 years old, she has accepted the fact that she was a spinster, she did not feel the pressure anymore, she was relax, she still liked Colin, but she was not waiting between them to happen, she was wearing what she wanted, saying what she wanted, being more herself and Colin suddenly found himself admiring her skin, her hair, how funny, witty, smart she was and how she would be a good wife and wondering why he or any other man had not realized this, it took him a while to admitt that he wanted her
@mariab6741 or maybe....just maybe....he's GOING TO start having feelings for her. U understand that's a possibility right? Why does he have to have had feelings for her....can't he just start having feelings for her?
Her favorite color was green and when her mom gave up on her and stopped dressing her up to find a husband, she started to wear green that went really well with her red hair, it also could be a reference to Colin's eyes, they are green on the books and she describes them as esmeralds
I felt Penelope's longing and quiet desperation throughout the 2 seasons. But Colin, despite doing the gazes and the hand hold and the sweet friendship declarations feels really flat and platonic towards Pen. Maybe that's the intent, but I would have rather liked to see scully-Mulder or Anne Shirley-Gilbert Blythe type of a romance where despite there not being ANY apparent gesture of love, the reader/viewer is always desperate to see them together and the moment to be right. This pairing, for whatever reasons, never holds my interest. That being said, Pen's individual arc is the most interesting of all.
I agree, i don't see the chemistry onscreen, but it's my favorite book in the series. Also, wallflower Pen come nerves of steel Lady Whisledown with Iris Maid Pen talking smack in the back ground makes her by far my favorite character. I wish they had cast the Benedict actor as Colin. I simply don't find Colin/Luke sexy. The new pictures are promising tho.
I appreciated this video very much. Also in the first episode when Penelope is getting presented to the queen.. I swear his gaze was locked on her and he had a small smile.. please tell me I’m not the only one that noticed this or am I just grasping at straws for any sort of polin content??
I went back and forth on that scene. I wasn't sure whether he was looking directly at her so I left it out of the video but I think the argument for it could be made.
I did not know the books, I had not yet read them, as I watched the serie I saw how Penelope has a huge crush on him and he sees her just as a friend, not as a woman, I thought to myself, I do not see him seeing her as a woman, it is just an unrequired love. He found on her a friend, a company during his travels because they write to each other when he is traveling. Now that I read the book I see it, specially when he says to her "you are the only constant in my life", that is from the book, he liked to talk to her, to dance with her, he saw her as Eloise's loyal friend, and suddenly when he came back from his last trip he saw her different, as a woman, they had a fight and he was like what is happening, Penelope is always hier, we talked, we laughed, we danced, she is a constant in my life, why is she changing
Really can't wait for the new season! Also, spoilers for others so read at your own risk: In the books, PoLin literally took year-YEARS-before it happened. I'm guessing that in the new season, it'll just be a few years from the present (Anthony and Kate's story) but in the books, Colin is already in his early 30s and Pen in her late 20s. They were both matured as a person before the actual love bloomed. They were literally friends to lovers, slowburn, she fell first BUT he fell harder. That scene wete Pen heard Col saying that he'll never marry Pen was played out differently in the books. In the books, Pen overheard Colin talking with Anthony and Benedict. Later, Colin went out of the country and one of his reasons was he was embarrassed and he felt bad for what he said about Pen. When he came back to London, Colin actively tried to make up with Pen and be a better friend. Also, Colin was the first to discover Pen's secret, not Eloise. By this time, lad was mad smitten and was ready to break all hells just to protect Penelope. I wonder how they will play it out in the series because one of my fave things about PoLin is that they took a very long time before they realized that they are made for each other. I have high expectations and high hopes too because a lot of changes from the books to series was better. I just don't want them to ruin Colin and Pen's love story. It's my fave Bridgerton book followed by Francesca's.
1:108:58 i like that Luke explained that Colin can casually hold Penelope’s hand (even though it’s not common in that era) showing that they’re comfortable since they know each other since they were young, it’s the details that makes Bridgerton special
The way you put it into words! Colin's hero complex, him avoiding/not knowing about his own feelings and choosing to go for a "safer" option. And also the way you mentioned all of those moments he wanted to say something but hesitated, that I didn't even pay attention to. I really enjoyed that - we will analyse every scene of them together - video because season 3 is in MAY and now I can at least rewatch two previous seasons for those Polin moments)
2:02, that scene in episode 5, I don't know if anyone notices, but he enters the room looking and smiling directly at Penelope, even though Marina was there and she was actively approaching him at this very moment. He looked at Marina only after he bowed, still looking at Penelope. And since I noticed that on my first watch of this series, even before I knew they will actually end up together in books, and probably in season 3 as well, this was some quite unsubtle hint that Penelope is still more important to Colin than a girl he's courting.
Thing is in the book he makes the “not going to court Penelope Featherington” comment on the doorstep of Violet’s house (after she moves out of Bridgerton house) because violet keeps badgering him. The series turned it from a joking moment of brothers making fun of each other to publicly denouncing any sort of interest in her.
The same realization came to me when I started working on Bridgerton videos. I had the same reaction, like "wait a minute, how did I not see this before?" 😆
@@PensiveWhiskers Lol 😂. Don’t know if that’s what the writer ✍🏻 of the series INTENDED (I haven’t read any of the books 📚; just seen the show 📺) or if that was just a happy coincidence 😃
If you really think about it, Colin’s words it can also be translated to as “I wouldn’t dream of COURTING Penelope Featherington…….. but I would MARRY her. His unconsciously already been courting her, his doing it without even realizing it. So why COURT her when his can just marry her.
9:40 it seems to me that the guys have little mocking smiles on, so to me they are the guys who as colin if he is interested in her and he shuts the idea down saying never ever and pen hears him.
Colin is denying his love for her I think that’s why he seems to always add that they’re friends in their conversations maybe affirming himself that she’d never like him or something
I'm pretty sure he didn't start to notice her like that until the beginning of Season 2, after they had been writing to each other, only then did he start to see her differently. He always saw her as being like a sister because she's best friends with Eloise and has always been treated like family by the Bridgertons. Generally she has from time-to-time expressed her opinions to Colin and helped him so she's the one he goes to talk to, he feels he can trust her. To him she's helpful, friendly and unthreatening. She's the DUFF of Bridgerton, she was nothing more than the go-between to him in Season 1.
This is the exact type of video I was looking for. Of course, I cried while you were describing the whole story. Even when it make me sad how romantically invisible she is for him I enjoyed your observations and can't wait for the lovely couple they'll be in S3.
Just a funny side note of when Eloise interrupts Colin and Penelope at the horse races and tells Colin that he is in her way. I think it would be and awesome tidbit next season after Eloise and Penelope make up, and Colin realizes his feelings, for Colin to make a similar statement that Eloise is getting in his way.
I actually love Colin’s declaration of their friendship taking shape so naturally. I think this is why society’s rules don’t apply to Pen in his brain. He treats her as he always has, ever since they were children. In his eyes this is his close personal friend who he shares a special and specific intimacy with that just makes sense to him because it has always been that way. I don’t think he realises the fact that he STILL acts like this with her as adults out in society actually means that there is more to it than mere learnt behaviour and friendship. I don’t even think he realises he could be seen as courting Pen, he is that oblivious to what he feels for her. Debling is going to be an excellent catalyst for that.
Just random thought: 7:11 Anthony gonna be very upset and angry at Colin about losing money. Interesting how the whole cousin Jack scheme would be explained. 🤔 Anyway can't wait for S3. 😁
I think that Colin doesn't realize yet how much Penelope means to him. He will next season thou. He really likes her and enjoys her company, probably the only woman he gets along with. Sure, he gets along with his siblings too, but she's 'different,' and he treats her different.
One thing in all these scenes lord fife is also in the background staring at pen the same which adds to the Colin never in your wildest dreams fife I think Colin subconsciously is trying to turn fife off of her because he like her but he’s a rake so Colin’s like I need to get his interest off of pen
This is great!!! I have watched both seasons over and over and over. Right now I am pretty much listening to the audiobook everyday at this point! Love the new content!
I do not agree with your claims. Penelope did not stab Eloise in the back. While I’m here, let me just explain how stupid Eloise🍐 plan was. Eloise🍐 was accused by the Queen herself of being Whistledown and was telling Penelope🍑that she intended to LIE TO THE QUEEN👸🏽and pretend she was Whistledown🪶to protect her family. Penelope🍑writing about her visit to a political rally saved not only Eloise🍐but the entire Bridgerton🐝family from a ruin which they never would have been able to come back from. Just look at how the Queen👸🏽 wanted to shun Lady Mary🐦simply for leaving high society because she fell in love with & married someone outside of the ton, and that was nearly twenty years earlier! Eloise🍐could not have kept up her lie and when the Queen👸🏽discovered that she wasn’t really Whistledown🪶, who knows how she might have reacted. this is all taking place in the early 18th century and Eloise🍐would have lied to the reigning sovereign. Disloyalty to the crown 👑was considered a form of treason at the time. Not only could the Queen have written off the Bridgerton🐝family and ruined them forever, she could have decided to exile Eloise🍐from England🏴 for her audacity. And if Queen Charlotte🦚were feeling particularly vicious🐍, she could have decided to revert all the Bridgerton🐝family holdings, property and titles back to the crown👑as punishment, essentially stripping their family of everything and leaving them all destitute outcasts. The idea of lying & intentionally making a fool of the reigning monarch during the 18th century is crazy & Eloise🍐was insane to even consider it. Penelope🍑 may have broken her friend’s trust but even Colin🗺️pointed out that Penelope🍑has sense when Eloise🍐does not. Pen🦢did the only thing she could to prevent Eloise🍐from doing something dangerously ruinous. I believe when everything comes out, the Bridgerton🐝family will be stunned and shocked. They may not be happy with Penelope🍑but I think they will recognize that she was instrumental in protecting them from multiple disasters and if anyone is going to appreciate that, it’s Violet🕊️, Anthony⏱️and Kate🪷.
Hi Saricka, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. I do not mean to attack or judge Penelope. I am completely enamored with the actress and her character resonates very deeply with me. I do think that Penelope did the best that she could in the situation that she was in with the limited time that she had. My comment on the "back stab" was not directed at the fact that she wrote about Eloise but rather the decision to not talk to Eloise about it. I understand her reasons for not wanting to share her identity. I feel like I identify even more with Pen now that I have decided to try to give myself a voice and share my thoughts kind of in a semi-anonymous fashion. To me, it felt like Pen's decision was a betrayal of the friendship by choosing to not share the information. Which I don't think makes her a bad person. Sometimes people are put into situations where there are no easy options, and a sacrifice has to be made. I thought about Pen's decision a lot when I was trying to analyze Penelope. As I like the character a lot, I felt that I needed to fight my own biases and try to look at situations from both sides. When I put myself in Eloise's place, I personally felt that I would want my friend to tell me, so that I could have an opportunity to decide or a chance to share my opinion. I understand that this comes down to perspective and I absolutely get that people might not feel the same way in the same circumstance. I do really appreciate that you added your viewpoint on this as I have no doubt that plenty of other people are on board.
@@PensiveWhiskers I understand your perspective and I can’t really fault you for it. But what a lot of people don’t tend to do is apply the logic? That when Pen 🦢started her society Papers she went into it with (Spider-Man)logic.The same reason Peter Parker didn’t tell Aunt May or MJ. Plausible Deniability. he doesn’t want the people he loves to be wrapped up in his webs. same can be said for Pen🦢. But neurotypical individuals often assume she’s some maniacal 😈 monster twiddling her thumb in a corner. Plotting how to take people down.
Thank you- I may be in the minority but Eloise is not without fault in this and in a way she treated Pen just as badly everyone else. There is an episode in the first season where Pen tells her off and I was like yes-please and thank you. Pen is not perfect but I feel she knows it and is starting to own it- can’t wait to see season 3 and I actually am interested in Eloise season just because it is going to be a hoot to see her fall in love and try to figure out what to do next.
I agree, I don't think Eloise is without fault in the situation. I think she put herself at risk by sneaking off, all while knowing and being told that she could get in trouble.
I didn't realize how many people didn't like Colin until I started watching some Bridgerton/Polin related videos. I always liked Colin and the way he acts makes sense. He has two older brothers he looks up to (and is still quiet young compared to them) and a massive family to contend with so he's trying to carve his own path (though sometimes misguided). I think overall like the others he means well in his actions but can be a bit off sometimes. And as far as his friendship with Pen it makes complete sense since it is unrequited affection (been there, done that, never again🤮). I think he does know he loves Pen and really respects her and their close friendship but isn't seeing past to romance due to how long they've known each other.
10:04 I agree I think Pen is very special to him. He was very harsh with how he said it so I understand why she feels that way. That’s why he was also taken aback when she confronted him about it in the new season 3 clip.
I hope the story turns out as well as you hope in the upcoming season! I haven't read the books but now I think I want to see what the show does before I read them.
I always heard the "I would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington, not in YOUR wildest dreams" as somewhat of a threat to Fife, and not Colin being oblivious. Maybe in the TV series, he already has those feelings and Fife is not the kind of guy Colin wants for his friend that could maybe be more.
I didn’t realize there were people who didn’t like Colin! He’s been my favorite brother since the beginning. The looks he gives are so incredibly well done they make my cold dead heart catch.
I think that he realizes that she's smarter than all of the other women he knows. He loves it that she thinks for herself. I remember watching Season 1 with my mom and remarking "Wow, she's really beautiful." Her eyes just kind of sparkle and she has a perfect face. The other guys have always kind of recognized that Colin and Penelope have a connection that nobody else could ever match.
I love how I've seen this video a thousand times since I've become interested in Bridgerton (mainly Polin). This sole video and the What A Barb podcast has been keeping me sane for the past year 🤣🙌🏽
I stand by my first thought when he’s talking about how he started conversing with someone he didn’t truely know while he was away he wanted to say her but got nervous and said himself, because he was worried about leading her on.. and then proceeds to say he’s swarn off women except for her as a way to gauge her interest..
Great video and I agree with all you have said. I think they've set it up exactly like this. This is why everyone is so excited for season 3. Thanks for making this! I'm living off these videos waiting for the new season.
I cannot wait for season 3 and I am enjoying your takes on the footages. I have to agree that these actors are great and are portraying exactly what we need to see. I love Penelope because I can understand her. She hid behind Lady Whistledown because of her insecurities and because of how society treated her physical appearance. She was hurting and found power in her writings…so to survive. I applaud her! And Colin is that love who most of us experienced in our youth…that romantic attraction which triggered unfamiliar feelings. I am also excited to watch this couple’s story. ❤❤❤
Thank you! I agree, Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan are both great at conveying this type of romance with all of its necessary subtlety. I am very excited to see what they do in season 3. Thank you for watching! :)
Loved this video. I just finished Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. It was so much better than i thought it would be i was literally smiling and so happy for Penelope at the end. I do hope that in the show they show colins flirtatious side and funny side more. Can't wait for more content.
In the book, when she tells him she has loved him for a long time, he admits he knew. He convinced himself it was just a crush, and not true love... and eventually, it would go away and she would love someone else. He convinced himself because he liked her too much to feel he needed to give her up.
Very good point, I think you're right; why court someone if he already just wants to be with her. What is the carriage scene that you are referring to?
@@PensiveWhiskers It's in the book. Colin follows Pen to a church where she is getting the printer the latest Whistledown publication. He catches her and they argue. Then they stop arguing and get intimate. Then he drags her inside the house and declares his intentions of marriage to her mother. Zero courtship. I realize that the declaration that Colin made to his friends comes long before the carriage scene, but with along with all of the good points you made about him already being in love with her, what he said consciously wasn't as negative as it seems. Subconsciously, he already knows he wants to be with her.
Penelope is his best friend. When he said he would never court her, I think he meant that he values her in a way that is very different from how men of the Ton view prospective wives. Anthony's S2 monologue to his friends about what he wants from a wife is much more like how Colin and his peers view typical marriable women of their class. Valued mainly just for position, manner, and as good breeders. He's always loved her. He just doesn't mentally categorize it as marital love. Colin regards Pen more as if she were his most favorite and most vulnerable sister. But he needs a reminder that she is not in fact his sister and that she is in fact far stronger than she let on.
I have not yet read the books but from the series I believe that he says he “would never dream of courting Penelope” in the same way that a childhood friend would deny having feelings for his best lady friend.
I never really thought about it but those guys could have been checking her out. When I first saw that scene of course I was thinking they were making fun of them but now that I watch it more it does seem as if they were checking her out. I guess it could go both ways. Great video!!
Thank you! What I find interesting is if person were to watch that scene without any context, they can reasonably conclude that the men were either (a) mocking or (b) checking out Pen. With context however, I do concede that it's closer to option (a), but you never know!
Thank you for the video, its really intresting. About the last scene: I agree that Colin's words could be interpreted in diffrent ways. As I see it, it could also have a different meaning than the one you described or rather a similar one. Seeing the way he looked at her when she talked about her dreams and ambitions I think it could also be interepreted this way: He'd never dream about courting her in the sense of tying her down or her being in the need of courting. I think he could see Penelope as someone who wants to follow her own path and not be restricted to the principle of courting. I think he might have never really seen her as one of the other girls in the sense of her ambitions not fitting in with way all the other girls are constantly focused on presenting themselves in the best possible light and putting so much weight on finind a "fitting" husband (similar to Eloise) That might also be a reason for the rather insensitive statement about her not counting since she is "Pen" (and not one of those girls following him around swining dancecards etc. in his face....)
I agree the Colin definitely really likes Pen but I don't think he really "saw" her as a woman or someone he could be romantically involved with although I think the letters and hearing about her dreams probably made her more real in his eyes. I think Colin is also kind of a charming manipulator but usually for a good cause. He played her scammy "cousin" and convinced those guys to go to the boxer's club even when they had no fashionable reason to do so. I think that jab against Penelope was never meant for her ears, it was to distance himself from her for her good (both seasons emphasise how attractive another man's woman is) and his, Pen isn't popular and he would have been teased about it by those guys. I don't think he'd care if he had a dedicated interest in her but he didn't and he wouldn't want those guys to know, even if he did. I do think he likes, respects and has deep feelings for Pen but it probably won't hit him that it's more than a friend until season 3. I also think he takes her for granted a little and seeing the chance that someone else could marry her might make him consider the depths of his own feelings.
That was a mispronunciation on my part , sorry!😅. I meant to say "Cressida snubs her" rather than Cressida snubs him." I then didn't notice my error until I was editing so I added text to the scene to correct my sentence but it probably made it more confusing.
I also wish they kept the secret a bit longer. I'm guessing they did it in season 1 because they wanted to create excitement around the show and because they weren't sure how successful the show was going to be.
@@PensiveWhiskers They did it in season because they understood anyone could Google, as the books are very popular. There would have been no suspense or tension.
I think they might tackle it by just telling the family and then waiting til another season to tell the entire ton. Just because we still have Sophie and Benedict’s story to come
Seasons 1&2 Colin is comfortable with, trust & enjoys Penelope’s company, is also slightly attracted to her but doesn’t know why (youth). That changes when they kiss in season 3… all of a sudden it clicks for him. The underlying interest, care, comfort & attraction makes sense to him.
Is there a book about Coln and Pen ??
There is! It's called "Romancing Mister Bridgerton" by Julia Quinn.
@@PensiveWhiskers Oooh! Thank you SO much for your reply, thank you! I shall have a look! ♥
People often mispronounce "ton." It's "tahn," not "tuhn."
not us literally surviving on crumbs
Hahaha, true story.
I had to rewatch s1 and 2 since the s3 teasers dropped, just so I can enjoy these crumbs 😂😭😭
Dying 😂😂😂😂😂
The Bridgerton fandom, more specifically the Polin fandom, are the most dedicated people on earth and I'm happy to be apart of it
It’s literally crumbs or nothing right now lol
A lot of these are Luke’s choices as an actor because he read the book before filming season 1. So he’s been purposely incorporating these little bread crumbs and sprinkling little moments for fans to swoon over. Before I even knew that they were meant to end up together, before I even read Romancing Mister Bridgerton… based on just watching seasons 1 and 2, I was already shipping them. Because the foundation was always there. He’s been an idiot in love from the first episode. And I love that kind of ship.
He's really invest as an actor. That's great :)
When the actor does their research 😍
He did his homework.
YES this part!! I've been obsessed/so impressed with the details he puts into his acting.
Well the beauty of the book is that he says it was gradual, he didn’t realize when it started because it was always there it just grew
I wanted to add up to 10:00. Colin danced (+flirted) with half of the women of the ton, yet his friends asked him only about Penelope! 😏. So. They noticed that he treats her differently.
Omg, you’re right 😮🫢🥹
someone said that one of the guys said 'sure' sarcastically at Cloin after saying that he would never dream of courting Penelope, which I found very interesting as they can see that he likes her.

Also Penelope: catches Colin’s eyes IMMEDIATELY even though she was hiding like the wallflower she is
Colin: a big river of DENIAL when it comes to Penelope, but the eyes don’t lie Colin, they don’t lie…
Hahahaha, I love this comment!
@@PensiveWhiskers thank you! I love your video!
Very good point!
So now I'm going to rewatch two seasons just to catch him catching his breath. Thank You
Yes the glances and long stares from each other is like a magnetic pull. Polin ❤️
Oh interesting, I didn't know about the impropriety of writing to a woman, very good point! He certainly did break many rules.
Letters was their only way of communication back then
it was as although their families are known to be friends, back then if an unwed couple were found to be writing letters it was considered scandalous, however due to Penelope being a wallflower and their families only knowing the pair to be friends, neither of the families were shocked when they found this out as Penelopes family simply ignored the possibility because they view her as a wallflower and Colins family simply because they know her to be a friend, not anyone whom he would possibly want to marry.
also some rules for fun,
Before an engagement, couples could not converse privately or be alone in a room, travel unchaperoned in a carriage, call one another by their first names, correspond with or give gifts to one another, dance more than two sets together on any evening or touch intimately - and that included handshakes. (the correspond part includes writing letters and its funny considering they quite literally break all the rules, in past seasons and the upcoming one)

@@evathomas8916 well violet always reminded Colin about Penelope in the book coz she wanted to set her up with her son😂

This is torture for me. I want the season to drop now.

Yup. Unfortunately this was it and miss yellow got the message. She knew he meant it exactly the way he said it even though he’s a real friend to her
Exactly this!
Agree! I also want Pen to move on from her crush on Colin and to focus on herself, build up her Confidence 💪, grow up .
@naravyn2248 none of those descriptions mean ugly, though. She was just a wallflower that hadn't blossomed.
I think Fife wonders why colin is always a round pen and is intrigued by her! I think we may get a seat jealous scene season between fife and pen dancing and Colin watching
I really hope that happens. That's how I interpreted that scene with Fife looking.
Who is Fife?
I hear it as
"I swore off women, but not you"
Basically, he's saying that he's not playing around anymore.
@@naravyn2248 He better clarify! 😅
I've been rewatching bridgerton, and didnt notice until someone pointed it out, that Fife is looking at Penelope, like always watching her
Yes that was my theory as well before lord Deblin was shown that he would go after pen (maybe w bad intentions) bc of the fact that the first male born will get the featherington title
Like always!
Yes ☺. I also think he doesn't know what to do with those feelings so it's almost like an active denial.
I hope that's how they'll do it. I'm hearing we have to wait a bit longer now, the anticipated release date for Season 3 is now 2024.

Fife is Colin's friend, sort of, then if Colin says something about Fife courting her, Fife is going to be like: this is why I asked you, and you said I was good to go
I do love that in COLIN’s book we all we seem to care about if he is good enough for our beloved Pen.
Yeah! That interpretation makes sense to me. I'm excited to see how wrong I am when the season comes out. :)
Penelope is my favorite character in this show, I just wish her romance was more grand than being the childhood friend pining over the boy trope!!! There better be a switch up in this next season where Colin picks up the slack and is desperate 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
Yup, this. I want to see Penelope really make him suffer.
If you read the books, don't worry. Colin is just slow. But once he realizes??? Hoo boy. That man is HUNGRY and UNHINGED for her.
I cant wait for that anvil to drop on him
Welcome fellow POLIN stan! 🤗 That is a good point about the color of the ribbon! I didn’t catch that.
Anvil is a good way of putting it! It's gonna be so great to see
Someone pointed something out on another video and I think it’s really important.
He was 33, Penelope was 28 years old, she has accepted the fact that she was a spinster, she did not feel the pressure anymore, she was relax, she still liked Colin, but she was not waiting between them to happen, she was wearing what she wanted, saying what she wanted, being more herself and Colin suddenly found himself admiring her skin, her hair, how funny, witty, smart she was and how she would be a good wife and wondering why he or any other man had not realized this, it took him a while to admitt that he wanted her
I think the “I would never dream of courting Penelope” line as in he doesn’t think he’s good enough for her
My thoughts exactly; you said it better and more concisely than me. 🙂 I couldn't find the right words in the moment.
that's what delusion looks like....wow

I think he has feelings for her, that he does not want to admitt to himself and when someone else notice it too he denies them at loud.
@mariab6741 or maybe....just maybe....he's GOING TO start having feelings for her. U understand that's a possibility right? Why does he have to have had feelings for her....can't he just start having feelings for her?
5:28 i love pen is wearing green, bc it's the mix of her/featherington's color, yellow, and colin's/bridgerton's color, blue.
Her favorite color was green and when her mom gave up on her and stopped dressing her up to find a husband, she started to wear green that went really well with her red hair, it also could be a reference to Colin's eyes, they are green on the books and she describes them as esmeralds
@@mariab6741 ohh, yes, i think it's a mix of all these things!

@@mariab6741 yes😊😊😊😊😊😊
Really can't wait for the new season! Also, spoilers for others so read at your own risk:
In the books, PoLin literally took year-YEARS-before it happened.
I love their story. It gives me these butterflies 😭 this this is going to be my favorite season
1:10 8:58 i like that Luke explained that Colin can casually hold Penelope’s hand (even though it’s not common in that era) showing that they’re comfortable since they know each other since they were young, it’s the details that makes Bridgerton special
Girl, this exactly how delulu I am when liking someone thank you for this
My pleasure! I'm happy I get to partake in the fandom.
Thank you! This one was a lot of fun to make, I like reading into things, even if it's my head.
YOU ARE NEVER READING TOO MUCH INTO IT ILYSM TY FOR THIS 💕💕💕💕
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Oooh, good catch!
OMG!! I Just realize her nickname is "Pen", as in "pen & paper" . . . Clever!! 😉
It shows how matters of the heart are just between those two people. A sacred, quiet, almost secret connection is true love.
I just love your take on things! I love Penelope, even her mistakes make her even more relatable. I think season 3 may be the best one yet
Thank you so much!
I love how she always lets him come to her. 😊
It would be cool if they did a throwback to that scene. I'm so curious how they will approach their dynamic next season.
Cannot wait for season 3 love POLINNN Penelope was and is my favorite character
Just random thought:
7:11 Anthony gonna be very upset and angry at Colin about losing money. Interesting how the whole cousin Jack scheme would be explained. 🤔
Anyway can't wait for S3.
Yes, I also got the impression that Lord Fife was looking at Pen because he seemed interested in her. I wasn't sure if that was just me.
right!!! I wish Lord Fife would make Colin jealous...@@PensiveWhiskers
they are the air i breathe!! i need season 3 rn or at least some freaking news, i’m losing oxygen!!!!! 😭😭😭
@@sarickacampbell2642oh man, missed opportunity not to use 🕷 for Spider-man.
😁👍
Bridgerton is VERY intentional with how they use colour, it's all very planned, so I loved that point you made about the bouquet of flowers!
Thanks! I'm sure there were a ton of color references that I missed in this video.
Really in depth analysis. I read all of the books before watching the show. Polin’s story is my favorite!
I didn't know that either until I checked out the subreddit. There were quite a few people who were not fans of him. I like him.
This sole video and the What A Barb podcast has been keeping me sane for the past year 🤣🙌🏽
In just a few weeks, you won’t need this video anymore. 😊 We are getting very close to S 3!
They are both my absolute favorite. I'm so excited for this season
I’m happy you enjoyed it! ☺️
Thank you for this video! I am very excited for s3, I cant wait!!!
My pleasure! 😄
He wants her so bad, he needs to wake up.
About one more month to go until we see the fire between them! Hopefully, I am assuming they will release the season in December.
The actor of penelope is dead fcking gorgeous shes the definition of true beauty and femininity
I agree! Nicola Coughlan is stunning. I also think that she is an excellent actress, which makes her look even more attractive.
She reminds me of those pretty perfect porcelain figurines that hel.holy water or something... she's devine!
After all the friend zoning I kind of hoped that by the time Colin realised he had feelings, Pen would have already moved on.
So good!!!! I didn’t even notice these! Can’t wait to rewatch these episodes before season 3
I'm glad you like it! 🙂 I'm sure there are tons of hints that I've missed so perhaps you'll find more on your rewatch.
I absolutely agree and love this synopsis 👍
Thank you for this video. It is just throwing fuel on my excitement.
Thank you for watching. 🙂
Excellent analysis and thank you for doing it! I’m a Polin shipper and I appreciated this breakdown ❤
Thank you for watching it! :)
In the book, when she tells him she has loved him for a long time, he admits he knew.
He convinced himself it was just a crush, and not true love... and eventually, it would go away and she would love someone else.
He convinced himself because he liked her too much to feel he needed to give her up.
He would never court her because he would immediately marry her. And the carriage scene basically solidifies it it. 😉
@@PensiveWhiskers Basically, they do Not really need a Courtship Phase, because they know each other since their Childhood.
The Barcelona comment I can't!!
But he needs a reminder that she is not in fact his sister and that she is in fact far stronger than she let on.
good breakdown!
Love it. Yes I agree with you. I think he said he would never court her. To me it was she is not one to court but marry.
This book was my favorite.i hope the do it justice!❤❤❤
I love this! And agree with everything you said! I think he has that repressed love. That you don’t know what you have until it’s gone love.
Yes! I think that's how the season will play out (hopefully), that he won't know what he has until it's gone.
Thank you for the video, its really intresting.
About the last scene:
I agree that Colin's words could be interpreted in diffrent ways.
As I see it, it could also have a different meaning than the one you described or rather a similar one.
Seeing the way he looked at her when she talked about her dreams and ambitions I think it could also be interepreted this way:
He'd never dream about courting her in the sense of tying her down or her being in the need of courting. I think he could see Penelope as someone who wants to follow her own path and not be restricted to the principle of courting. I think he might have never really seen her as one of the other girls in the sense of her ambitions not fitting in with way all the other girls are constantly focused on presenting themselves in the best possible light and putting so much weight on finind a "fitting" husband (similar to Eloise)
That might also be a reason for the rather insensitive statement about her not counting since she is "Pen" (and not one of those girls following him around swining dancecards etc. in his face....)
Cressida didn’t snub him. She purposefully dumped her punch on Pen. He snubs her and asks Pen, instead
That was a mispronunciation on my part , sorry!😅. I meant to say "Cressida snubs her" rather than Cressida snubs him." I then didn't notice my error until I was editing so I added text to the scene to correct my sentence but it probably made it more confusing.
Love this video thank you.
My pleasure! I'm happy you enjoyed it. :)
Honestly thank you so much for this video, now i don't have to rewatch the series just to see their moments lmfao.
Thank you so much for watching! I'm happy I got to make it for others. ☺
I really liked this video and thank you ❤
Thank you! I'm happy you liked it. :)
I’m so sad the pivoted the plot of Penelope’s secret from the book. Very sad. Keep lady whistle down secret for longer!
I appreciate the thoughrough analysis
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
