- Today i head to Kents South Coast to fish for Thornback ray.In this video I share some of my reasons for going sea fishing. There are many thoughts that go through my head when it comes to fishing from thinking this is the best thing to be doing to why do i even bother! well i think Sea fishing is one of the best ways to connect with nature , make friends and get a real pleasure out of life here in the U.K. I do love your comments on this channel and politely ask you to subscribe- It helps the channel and means i can keep you updated on catches as the seasons change.

I go fishing because i had to take early retierment due to a heart attack 3 years ago. It hit me very hard and was so down.I was told to go home asnd watch the grass grow not even to cut it .I had to do somthing before i went crazy . Now i dint watch TV i only watch youtube fishing streams like yours. It gave me the urge to get out so i invested in some good quality gear and get out when ever i can . I am crap at it and dont catch much boohoo . But guys like you realy help . Thanks 👍👍👍

Sea fishing is great for mental health I'm in Stu London catch fish and eat them 3hoom paternoster I picked 3 plaice and flounderscbut I wanted a big cod never orca DOVER sole never fishing helps ya mind PEOPKE it's a lit off work but very stimulating BIG up channel
Everything about fishing gets me energised. The senses taking in the sights, the sounds, the smells and the individual location settings. I camp a lot at the venues I fish and use an E-bike and trailer that easily lugs a lot of gear around. Going to be spending a month or two cruising the South East coast from Wicklow to Cork this year (for a start). I'll be focusing mainly on bass, but there's plenty of other species of good size along the South.
At last ill get to do some bass fishing in Cornwall this June too. Looking forward to it all.

Im lucky enough to live in Cornwall, the sea fishing and scenery here keeps me sane ,beautiful beaches stunning daybreaks and sunsets .so many different place's to fish all within a 15 mile radius from my home .all the fish i catch are returned, i fush with friends and family members, its a great all round hobby ,i don't always catch ,but there's always tomorrow. Ive been fishing for over 50 years and always loved it .its great to watch you fish and show exactly how it really is.thanks for all your great videos and tips. Always learning something new .

My first sea fish was a flounder when I was around 7, although most of my fishing growing up was in rivers and streams. At 68, I now live close to the sea and enjoy fishing regularly; sometimes it's the solitude of fishing alone and other times it's fishing with friends or in a competition. We face west and when weather conditions permit, there's nothing better than fishing while watching a sunset which is different each evening.

I have been a sea angler around the Kent and Sussex coast for 61 years. Catching a fish is a bonus nowadays. Its like an addiction to me. My first fish i caught at the age of 5 on Dungeness beach with my late father, was a double shot of a Rockling and a Dab. I was hooked from that point on. Im still fishing and catching at the age of 66 and hopefully for a good few years to come. Great video as always. May see you on the beach at some point. Tight lines. 👍

First fish was a flounder at 5 years old. Love the anticipation, the drive and walk to a mark, preparing my rigs and bait, the sights and nature. Best of all that electric feeling from a good bite.
My fishing year is over after one session, a sudden shoulder condition has taken all that away. All hopes on a shoulder specialist now, if he can fix me I’ll never take another dogfish for granted again!
my first sea fish were caught with a shrimping net at Greatstone in Kent, on our annual day out to the beach back in the 70's. Tiny little flatfish of multiple species. Then going to Dungeness with a little spinning rod and catching a pouting wirh some lugworm when I was about 6 years old . After that going on my first holiday to Pevensey bay and using shrimps as bait to catch whiting. Then a year after getting a small conger on Mackerel and losing a big bass in the edge . such happy memories . Loved the video and really got me thinking . Tight lines

I have been both sea boat fishing and shore fishing I’m pretty sure for as long as I remember my location choices when shore fishing aren’t the best and I blank about 80% of the time but I do like the serenity of the beach. Being out and the only one on a peaceful beach watching the sunrise is just calming for me but unfortunately or more fortunately my first catch was a conger that was the height of me at the time when I was about 14-15 over lockdown

Great topic Matt why do we do it ? I remember my first fish a work mate invited me down to Shoreham 30 odd years age I borrowed one of his rods and I caught a small whiting the excitement at the time was never to be forgotten, but now 30 years on my two boys still come fishing and as a new grandad hopefully my grandson will join us, what I get out of fishing is spending time with my son's as best mates and coming away without eny stress........Brendon

I’ve been course and carp fishing since I was a kid. A few years ago a mate invited me sea fishing. Loved it. Bought some second hand gear from our local tackle shop and go regularly now. Here on the east coast it’s pretty tough but love the fact we can get to the beach after work and spend four or five hours fishing and catching up.
Whiting, whiting and whiting at the moment but we still have fun👍

Is nice to get out. Best thing is when a carefully laid plan, tactics and home-spun methods work out and catch the target species. Of course, a lot of times the plans come to nowt but when they do, your enthusiasm is renewed and all of a sudden the water in front of you is jammed with other hungry imagined customers. Of course, another bite never comes but the optimism is boosted again in the moment - think'll come back tomorrow....

First fish 50yrs ago, a clyde cod, second argyll brownie, and 3rd a beautiful seatrout... and I was hooked. Now older probably realise, its the on yer own, in God's country. Thanks for what you do.

About 60 years ago i caught an eel, i was with my mates we were all in the region of 10-11years old, i was over the moon fishing from a jetty with a centre pin reel and a rod made out of a bamboo cane home made. In them days you had to improvise whipped homemade eyes on made of stiff wire and talked to all the older fishermen and caged hooks, weights, even learned to make our own weights.👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣

My first fish was a schoolie caught using a old shakespeare boat rod with a white rag ,sitting on the end of a groin with a incoming tide in about a foot of water when I was about 9

My first fish was a bass, a wee little thing but to be it was the biggest fish ever, love beach fishing as it clears my head and listening to the waves really relaxes me and I forget all my problems, it’s freedom of mind for me.

I fish because I wanted to get back to it from nearly 45 years ago! I started looking at CZcams vids and then got in touch with my cousin Roy from Wallasey who is an amazing sea angler. He pointed me in the right direction. This was summer 2023. My first cast got me a lovely 1 1/2lb bass! I was hooked! I love the technical aspect of the gear and rigs. Getting out to the coast is fantastic and living in central Lincolnshire its less than 2 hours away. If I blank, it doesn't really bother me, but I am competitive so I see it as a challenge. I want to learn from all you Tubers, which is great as you share your secret ways, this was never available all those years ago! So for that, I thank you for your great videos! Tight lines 🎣

I have learnt loads already and it’s so nice to see somewhere familiar (Hastings!) have been coming there since I was a very young kid and will be there again next week…. Of course fishing! My first fish was a freshwater Chub, I was 10 at the time, caught on a bamboo cane with a plastic cotton reel screwed into the cane. I took it home in a bucket on the train to show my mum. I'm 75 now and my best was a conga caught near the Sand Banks ferry. I plan to go there in June to see if I can get another. I'm living in Norfolk now and go infrequently to the North coast when the weather is a little kinder. I still have the first rod by the way.

Why we go fishing , for me is that feeling that can't be expressed. Learning to connect with the sea and sky . Its not something you can explain in words . Sea fishing opens you up to a different world . Sometimes its not about catching but it does help hahahha like the channel my friend

My first fish was a Cole fish on the palice pier Brighton. Many moons ago 😊😊. Just like being out taking part in the hobby weather on your own or with others. If you catch bonus 😊

My first fish was a wrasse off pulpit rock with my Dad when I was about 10 years old on a pole, nearly turned it inside out as I launched it 20 feet through the air on the strike, I was a tad over-excited. That was the only real time I sea-fished until last year. Now I go to either Hayling or Eastney every chance I get and just chuck in a flapper for whiting/doggies/flatties (without much luck) and always a nice big pulley pennel on the off chance there's something big to be had though there hasn't been as of yet. As for why, a day by the sea is better than a day almost anywhere else and maybe, just maybe, I'll catch a fish. Have watched almost all your content over the last year, it's taught me loads and I always look for the next one. Thanks for doing them.

My first fish was a flounder caught in the Menai Straits many years ago. As a teacher it's about the peace I get when I'm out on my own and the laughs when out with the lads 🐟🎣

I am 67 now. First fish was an Eel followed by a Flounder. I was 14. I remember it as if it was yesterday.

Funny how I wouldn't hike or walk in bad weather, but will quite happily fish 😁
Not interested in competition or the latest gear. I obviously do update my equipment but my methods, " bait and wait" are still basically the same. I love the idea of catching wild fish.

I need to watch your videos more! Great one right here, I love the style. My first answer to why I fish would be to be outside, outdoors, not surrounded by straight lines and shape angles. To see the sunlight unobstructed by glass. And then, I always was saying that I'm after trophy fish. Not after another bass or another dogfish but trophy fish! That speaks to this optimism you gotta have while getting set up. I feel like this optimism is becoming depleted in me. Anyway, it's a mixture of all of the above why I go fishing. Thanks for this video and big kudos on all your hard work on this channel!
Awesome thoughts mate. Although you might feel your optimism waining . There will come a moment that changes that, a black swan event a surprise catch or a moment in nature you don't expect.
My first sea fish was a dab fishing off Great Yarmouth pier, Billy Fury was doing a show there.

Nothing beats being outside in the fresh air amongst nature. And after all the hard work and hours standing out in the freezing cold, when you eventually get home with that fish and eat it…the sense of accomplishment is like no other 👌🏼

My Dad took me and my brother fishing from a very young age. We’ve been fishing together for over 50 years. Unfortunately our Dad passed away recently so it’s just me and my brother now but we’ve loads of great memories of the time we spent together with Dad and that’s what it was all about to us.

You've got some waders Matt!! I remember you saying you liked to physically feel the water temperature & conditions, etc., which is a very valid point, & something that hadn't occurred to me, but at this time of year waders have their advantages! For me, the attraction is the pure & simple joy of catching a fish, born in childhood as with most anglers, catching sticklebacks in the local canal, but I soon decided sea fishing is the only way for me, whether from boat or shore, it doesn't matter. Just being by or on the sea does something very beneficial to you, puts everything in perspective. There's nothing quite like it, and if you happen to catch some fish it's an added bonus! My first fish was a Ballan Wrasse too…. From a small boat off the coast of the Isle of Wight with the Bembridge Angling Club…. Great days with the BAC and their monthly members competition… Loved it.

Fishing for me these days is an escape from the stress of everyday life plus the opportunity to teach others some of the fishing skills I have picked up over the years.
Hi Brian - yes most rewarding isn't it. I always remember you saying that getting the kids to catch a fish really helps. Keep it up your doing a good job for our community. (Brian is a Angling trust coach who does lessons for all- catch him as the angling coach on facebook - you will also see him in Sea Angler this month)
First fish as a kid with my dad was a Rainbow Trout.
It was so beautiful straight out of the river on a children's rod.
My dad didn't catch but was really happy when i reeled it in.
We took it back to the caravan it went straight on the BBQ, it tasted so nice.
I was hooked as much as the Trout.

After that we would be on a key side in Cornwall or Devon fishing, that was when it got really interesting.
My first sea fish was a little pouting followed by a Pollock.
They got put back to live another day.
I always came back to sea fishing, i don't think you can beat a day by the coast.
Never knowing what night be on the end of the line.
Peace the noise of the sea and the wildlife.
Good company sometimes.
What a beautiful way to enjoy life.

Started fishing last summer and caught a couple of mackerel and that's me hooked, had some great late summer nights fishing off Portencross pier enjoying the sunset across Arran and Cumbrae with owls going off in the background

Spent a good chunk of my childhood on the river bank or day dreaming in class about being on the riverbank . My first time shore fishing was on a family holiday in North folk just after the first lockdown. Like most of the best moments in life completely unplanned, chanced upon a somewhat neglected but serviceable rod and sand spike in the pill box that was at the bottom of the air b&b that we where staying at. Haven’t looked back since.

I go fishing for no other reason than I like it! My first seafish was a small wrass caught off of Bournemouth pier in 1951 with a handline. I remember several years later again fishing with a handline this time off Clarence Pier in Southsea catching a large ray. It was bigger than any of the fish that the experts with their fancy rods caught!

You hit the nail on the bead at the start. That antispation!!!! And the mentel health side if things. Fishing really helps me out in That aspect of things mate. My first fish was a sea bass. I had next to no gear just the 1 rod no teypod just standing there holding my 15ft cheep rod from ebay on a pully panel with squid and lug. I felt the nock. Thort that was strange reeled in and a cracking bass on the end. You can't beat it. Tight lines matt all the best 🎣🎣🎣

I sometimes have mixed feelings about being the only angler on the beach! Enjoy the solitude but then wonder... are there any fish here. Always enjoy your videos. I like the angles that you shoot. Different from the rest in a good way.

I used to fish constantly. In the Summer I would fish for Mackerel / garfish/ Pollack maybe 10 or 12 times. Last year despite numerous observation trips to the Marina I saw precious few mackerel being caught. Never fished there once, only saw one shoal on the beach but caught NONE. I did catch horse mackerel though. Such a shame that kids today don't go fishing in the numbers they used too. They wouldn't believe the numbers of fish we used to catch in the Summer!!!!
Hi Kerry yes i agree. Although experienced anglers and coastal goers like ourselves can understand the holistic elements - For Kids catching fish at the start of their sea fishing journey is so important. Those mackerel seasons very hit and miss.
I’ve started to get into sea fishing again as I have not renewed my subscription for the Welsh Dee, salmon are almost as rare as rocking horse poo now, mainly due due to the lack of effort by the NRW.
That’s a shame - I have read up on some of the old Salmon rivers. There should be plenty of help here on the channel for the Sea fishing side
My first fish was a Cuckoo wrasse on the Prince of Wales pier Dover, I was about 10. I used to fish regularly as a kid, All my kit was very basic as we didn't have much money. I have recently taken it up again. I save hard for new rods, reels tackle etc, nothing fancy like century or Ziplex, but I love my penn and akios rods, and I enjoy learning about weather conditions, and bait presentation. I love being in the open, I got sick of staring at a phone and wasting my time off work. It's really good for my mental health as I have condition that effects my quality of life. Planning a fishing trip is a much welcome distraction.

@@SaltwaterAngler Thanks alot I appreciate your comment. Like you I tried recently for a Ray, I've not caught one yet. I was over at Leysdown on the isle of Sheppy recently. Blanked! Fishing with 2 rods on pulleys, nice bluey and herring baits, only had one rod rattle in 5 hours. Everything looked perfect in terms of wind, conditions etc. What made it worse was a guy uploaded a video of the same mark a few days before I went, and he and his pals caught at least 6. I'll keep plugging away. Thanks for your videos, a real motivation and help to me. Every video gets a 👍

A nice try & a nice little video 👍. I live in the area & Dymchurch has been quite disappointing this year, which I believe is due to commercial fishing (netting) & all the freshwater being dumped in the sea from all the marsh outflows.

I was about 8 in the Scilly Isles, first fish a ballan wrasse on a cheap orange handline with limpet for bait - unforgetable.

Although we have an inbuilt primal hunter instinct within which drives man to fish, it does need a catalyst to inflame. My catalyst was my uncle Ray taking me fishing for roach on the Thames, in Henley when I was 5 years old. Instant attraction! My further exploits took many diverse methods and varieties of fishing. Beach fishing holds a special place. It can be a desolate and wild place, testing your skill with the many moods of the sea. You feel at one with nature. Just being outside and having a small reward of success can make you feel alive. I never take a phone!

Why do I go fishing? Well, I'm not going so much these days, but it was always to catch Fish for the pan, plus the camaraderie of fishing with good mates. Health problems have meant I can't go so much, the bad weather affects that too. Also, my favourite guy that I fish with has found out that his Wife is terminally ill, so neither of us have been out yet this year.
First fish I caught was over 50 years ago. I'd gone down to a local tidal estuary in my early teens with some friends & family, and had been casting out lures on a little old Edgar Sealy spinning rod. Nothing was biting, got fed up, and left the rod on a grass bank with the lure still in the water. I saw the rod move so grabbed it quickly and I'd caught an Eel! My first sea fish I ever caught was a small floundering was about 7yrs old so I took it home and my mum fried for me bean fishing ever since now iam 66yrs old.
Fishing gives me an opportunity to stop, breathe and reconnect with the natural world. First sea fish? A mackerel from a boat out of Mevagissey. Tight lines 👍

bamboo rod down the dykes with my Dad...some line tied to the end..bottle cork as a float..and a big old garden worm...cork didn't move but i pulled in a Flounder of about a pound...i shall never forget it...we took said fish home (the old man was Irish) and he told me to clean the fish !!!! all i done was wash it under the cold tap....my Dads face was a picture..!! miss you Pops x

I love all kinds of fishing, fly, course and sea. Sea is always excuting its 2hrs in all directions so getting ti the seaside is a trek but worth it.
First fish Matt caught was codling from sheerness in front of where tesco is in was in height of Winter in or around 1973

You are right about the benefits of sea fishing you always feel good after a couple of hours down the beach, especially when it all comes together with a good catch or the weather has been kind and you have had a relaxing session. I am lucky, I live on the coast and live only a couple of hundred yards from the beach so I can pick and choose when I want fish but you also see the other side of the state of our coastline. I spend a fair bit of time picking up rubbish alongside other local people, we all know the joys of hauling in plastic bags! {not}. Enough of the rants! On a lighter note, my first fish was a Billet (The North Yorkshire name for Coalfish) from Whitby Harbour in 1957 when I was five years old.

First fish also a bright red balian wrasse, seemed like a record breaker at the time, aged 6 in Alderney harbor on a red and white float, can’t remember the bait

Fishing to me is an excuse to sit by the sea and ignore the unpleasantness of the modern world. I often say if they banned fishing tomorrow, I would still go and sit down the beach, pier and harbour (after rioting).
Why Sea Fishing?
For me, there's a degree of freedom sea fishing that you definitely don't get with (In Britain at least) coarse, river and fly fishing. Though I am entirely catch and release, have the highest care for fish welfare and am a stickler for fishing regs national & local, I can't stand being told what to do.
I occasionally read through the pages and pages of rules for day ticket lakes and club waters around me and always end up irritated, despite never having any plans to fish there.
Maybe I'm just antisocial. Making solitary sea fishing, usually at night, the ideal pursuit.

I like fishing because itl gets me away from all the noise and stress of my life. I do quite well and definately do not spend much money on kit, it doesn´t have to be modern expensive kit for me, just have to have the right bait at the right place at the right time. I use mussels and anything I find at the local beaches as baits, mackrel as well. Catching fish is not that important as such, where I live (Denmark) it is limited to one cod and one salmon per person per day. I don´t mind what fish I catch as such, a lot of flatties here, mackrel and herring, some good sea trout (biggest I have caught is 6,8kg) garfish. I own a kennel, so peace and quiet is the bonus, although I do take friends out in my boat sometimes. First sea fish I caught was a flattie in the river Colne (Colchester) at the mill at the bottom of East Hill (I was about 10 years old), before they cut the brackish water off from coming up the river, I remember the glass-eels climbing over the weir. Now I live abroad, but I often think of the cold winter nights catching whiting from the pier at Walton on the Naze.
Sea fishing for me is a way of getting away from everything the peace and solitude especially with mental health issues 52 years of fishing and I still don't eat fish

After spending £100’s on kit and hours collecting bait and driving an hour to spend another 4 waiting for the rod tip to go, ruining the kitchen and stinking out the bin gutting and filleting, there’s nothing quite like eating that free fish you cought 😅

You don't take the barbs off !!!..I've had a barbed hook taken out of my finger twice..do you know how painful and hard they are to get out..!!.???..I've taken barbs off ally hooks for over 25years, including lures...I have NEVER lost a fish..!!

My first fish was a perch on spinner when I was 7 or 8. That spinner went on to catch me probably 40 or 50 trout and perch that year, while my friends were catching only leaves and twigs next to me. I ended up loosing it into some bushes- spent at least 6 hours looking for it but with no success. I still have dreams about where its exact location is to this day 😂
