Understanding Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  • According to the American Thyroid Association, women are five to eight times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid disease. Since two of the most common Thyroid conditions, Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's are autoimmune in nature, their symptoms may often be confused with other health problems, which can make reaching a diagnosis for some, a long and puzzling process.
We are joined by Dr. Mark Lupo, Medical Director of the Thyroid & Endocrine Center of Florida, to discuss the diagnostic journey, the symptoms, the risks and how, due to advances in testing, one result just might provide the missing piece you’ve been looking for.

It took me 28 years to be diagnosed with hashimotos disease. It wasn’t until I paid to have a series of ultrasounds done at a health fair in Florida that they turned up nodules on my thyroid. My doctor ignored the first report and three years later I had another set of tests in Florida and my nodule had increased in size. My doctor then ordered the whole battery of tests that showed I had an autoimmune disorder. Three years later I had my thyroid and parathyroid glands removed. I had previously talked to my doctor about my heart palpitations and she put me on blood pressure pills. I have found that doctors have little to no knowledge of autoimmune disorders. You must be your own advocate and do your own research.

I am almost 65 & only recently discovered that illnesses such as thyroid disease are often caused by narcissistic abuse. This very well could have been the case, & cause, for my condition. I was born into a family of complete narcissistic vampires & suffered the garbage they threw at me for some 60 years, (as they started early on the "baby"). I am in process of researching this presently. I've dealt with copious amounts of anxiety coming from a "battle royal" home life. Always physically healthy, it all hit in my later years & I'm far from being healthy now. The medical doctors are useless, for the most part. I have quite distanced my self from the narcissistic vampire relatives as well as so called friends. I live alone; much better than having to be in a constant battle with abusers. I also suffer IBS, acid reflux, & other disorders. If any of you have abusive relatives, get rid of them NOW & never be with them again. Your heart, mind, body, & even your inner spirit will thank you for it, although you have to continue to fight the disease within. And, yes, I have PTSD, too. But, this is possibly the beginning of a healing journey.🙏

A Emily Clarke. Glad to hear that you found it. I've had it my whole life, actually. But was only 11 years old when then 1st diagnosed me with it. I remember how my whole body would change like a yo-yo. I was say, 118lbs today, & the week or 2 after that, i was already 180lbs. Then I'd drop to 145lbs say, & go back up to 175, & up & down. I never stayed the same weight for long. When I was heaftier, I barely had an appetite, was way more depressed, felt exhausted & had no energy what so ever to do things. It took me forever to do things, because I felt like I hadn't slept in weeks or months even. I was out of breath quickly, & had no grip to my hands off & on a lot too. Depending on my level of fatigue, etc... I was always an extremely shy person, & I'd get nervous easily, & dealing with this internal yo-yo state 24-7-365 for years, just added to my nervousness. You have many who think that you eat to much this, or that, etc... & that's why you're the size that you are. Yet, I was a kid who was everywhere when I was young. All over the place where we lived. It was such a small town, you were lucky if there were 25 houses on the 1 side of our town alone. That's how small this town is. I was everywhere, & yet, I'd still gain weight, without changing anything, then lose the same way. Without changing anything. It's been a real headache my whole life. Not being able to keep a normal weight. My Mom's favorite way of describing this problem of mine is, I just look at food & gain 50lbs, & eat all that I want & lose that much or more. I've been 118lbs at 18 years old or even 120lbs at 20 years old, & while doctors told me that I was a good weight for my height (5'3); I honestly felt sick. I felt dangerously thin. I felt like an anorexic girl. As much as it may thin out my largest areas between my waist & knees where I bulge the most, it also took more from my ribs where they were all bones & just sticking out more. Nothing covering them. Not healthy looking at all. I'm a very big boned person, & therefore, doctors think 120 is great when in fact, my body says otherwise. It says, I can weigh between 140 to 160 & I'm fine. With 150 being my ideal weight. But anything below or above those numbers feels like death to my body. That's why I stick to whatever I know about myself, & have always said that I know myself way too well to have a doctor that doesn't take what I say seriously. I already know what my do's & don'ts are weight wise, food wise, etc... I just can't treat myself as they can. If they don't want to co-operate. Nothing I can do about that. Thyroid problems can cause any disease in existence. Don't let anyone tell you any different. My Grandma's battle with it going undetected until the last 2 years of her nearly 73 years of life, said it all. Hope this helps you some. Take care & all the best. :)

In 1983 I had my first baby, three years later by chance by a GP who had also had it as a medical student, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and admitted to hospital for three weeks it was chronic and took a long time to stabilise and bring my heart rate down. I then also suffered with one eye enlargement my weight dropped significantly my anxiety, panic attacks and hands shook, my heart rate and muscle strength was extreme. In 1994 I had my fourth baby and had post natal depression. By 1995 graves returned each time after each three more babies. After my fourth baby the doctor thought I should stop breast feeding and take anti depressants and thyroid disease medication. That made me feel even worse.
By 1998 my thyroid symptoms were recurring. Then by 2008 after a lot of stress, anxiety and depression my hyperthyroidism turned into Hashimoto hypothyroidism. At 58 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia another under diagnosed condition I’d lived with symptoms since I was a child.
All in all I have lived with autoimmune disease both hyper and hypo for 38 years. At 63 I still suffer with symptoms trying to regulate and adjust my medication is tricky. Taking thyroxine doesn’t cure the disease it treats the disease and controls it but is volatile, hormone changes, viruses, menopause, periods all affect dose and the impact and changes can take time to show up in a blood test or not show up. It is a fickle and insidious disease.
To live a life with your body under constant attack is hard. I took up qigong, practice yoga and Pilates, lift weights, walk, meditate practice mindfulness and went vegetarian then vegan three years ago, I eat very low gluten, grains or high glycemic carbs, low sugar and fast. It’s a lifestyle change and a constant battle.
My experience’s with the medical profession has been a struggle, ignorance, tunnel vision and stupid comments.
My advice is do as much research for yourself and try, try and try again. Stress is a killer so be aware of how to combat it. Lifestyle past, present and future all need to be factored into your personal journey. Wellness is mind and body listen to what both are telling you. Look in the mirror and love yourself 💜

By diet and supplements, I reduced this to 100mcg in 2019. Now trying again from January. So have turmeric tea with black pepper and a teaspoon if coconut oil (recommended by utube ayurvedic) . This actually raised my cholesterol to 5.7. I was under 5 before. Now out of gours gp told me that I should ask my gp to recommend endocrinologist if I would like to heal my hypothyroid. So this is what I shall do today. My thyroid may have shrunk, so maybtake a while. I am not allowed coconut oil by my dietician. Will continue with turmeric tea without coconut oil.

@ Lorrane. I can relate to what you & many others are saying here. My maternal Grandmother had many health issues, which made her a hard patient to both diagnose & treat. Her thyroid played like a yo-yo: going from too high, to too low, & up & down like that for many years. Her weight fluctuated like that, as well as her appetite, etc... By the time they diagnosed her with it, she was a year or 2 away from the end of her life (about 70 years old). She had had this issue since she was in her 40s if not younger, & it was too late in her life to be able to treat her problem. By then, it caused many other health problems: kidney disease, Types 1 & 2 Diabetes, Gangrene, Arthritis, Lactose Intolerance, Heart Problems (her heart would skip a beat so they put in a pacer), Celiac Disease, Food Allergies & Sensitivities, etc.... She couldn't eat cruciferous vegetables because they would cause seizures in her. She also had severe Calcium Deficiency & had Osteoporosis, she had extremely low Vitamin B Levels too. She was low in all of her B Vitamins. Not just B12. When her sugar levels played, it would cause seizures in her. And her blood pressure also played, & would get so low, it would put her in a coma. So, yes. It's possible to be like my Grandma & suffer from both TYPES 1 & 2 Diabetes at the same time. One part of the day she'd start out high, then it would drop. They skyrocket, then drop again. And up & down it would go. It was very frustrating for her & hard to get the proper treatment for it. They weren't as familiar with what to do for her then. Especially, someone like her with too many problems at once. What was good for her thyroid problems, really threw off her diabetes, & vice versa. It was a never ending challenge. Hopefully, tell everyone this will help out some. Take care & all the best. :)

I am 13 and was diagnosed with hashimotos disease about 5 months ago, but the weird thing is I never noticed any symptoms, except fatigue. I was always tired, I slept in class and slept about 15 to 17 hours a day. I never thought it was weird, I was just tired, but then my mom noticed how swollen my neck looked, then my moms friend thought it was a goiter. I was so confused I had no clue what they were talking about, so of course I asked and they told me all about it. I remember my friend and I joking about how it made since I had hyperthyroidism because of how thin I was, but little did I know it was not that. One day I began feeling sick and missed a couple days of school, so my mom made me go to the doctor. So, I went and they checked me out, but then my mom pointed out my throat and my doctor confirmed it could be a goiter. So, they took my blood (I cried) to test the hormone levels and then I left. A couple days later my mom got a call, saying I had hashimotos and I wanted graves because I would lose weight, but looking back now I know that was foolish. I’ve actually had a cancer scare, they had to do a ultrasound of my thyroid to see if it was cancerous and I was terrified. Luckily, it was not cancer and I’ve been doing much better. I’m take my medicine (synthyroid) and I’ve been doing much better in school. Also, now that I’ve been through this I’ve decided when I grow up I want to be a pediatric endocrinologist because I can relate to the kids and really help them. I’m just happy I caught it early. P.S. this is not a beg of attention, I just wanted to share my story and thank you for taking the time to read it.😘

I am very close to being 20, I was diagnosed at 10. While us having to deal with it so young can be so frustrating sometimes, with all of the appointments and stuff; we are very fortunate to catch it so early and can work to help it early on. I also had no idea, and I don't even think anyone in my life thought so (even though my mom has always had it too), we had just gone to the doctors because I was having sharp pains on the side of my neck, under my jaw. It was so random, and they drew my blood to see what was up and sure enough, I had hashimoto's. I had an ultrasound on my thyroid when I was like 15 (I don't quite remember why) but I just kept calling it my little neck baby 😂
While I still struggle with fatigue the most, everything really has been okay. Hashimoto's doesn't rule my life. You'll be alright, I bet you'll be more than alright, I bet that you'll thrive in life. Just always remember that it is perfectly okay to take time for yourself if you're fatigued or something and it's a bit much; it can happen sometimes, even with the medication and sometimes it is hard to deal with but regardless, things will work out 😊💚 I wish you nothing but happiness and success in life.

I have all the symptoms of Hypothyroidism and all my doctors I’ve seen only run the standard tests and say my thyroid is “normal”. So they won’t run anymore tests. I’m almost 100 lbs overweight and my weight continues to climb even though I only eat one small meal a day. They say calories in calories out. In other words they think I’m over eating. It makes me so angry and upset because I know that I’m telling the truth. I’ve even taken my temperature in the morning before getting out of bed and it’s low every morning between 93.9-96.5 which indicates a thyroid condition. I’ve even told them that I literally feel like I’m dying because I have chest pain and heart palpitations, anxiety, muscle pain and stiffness, muscle spasms in my legs, back and sides. I have insomnia, dry hair, skin and nails. My memory has gotten real bad, I can’t exercise because my body is so tired and it causes more pain to even walk. Now they want to send me to a psychiatrist because they think it’s all in my head. In the mean time, I feel like I’m dying. I’m to the point that I don’t trust any doctors with my health because I feel that they’re only in it for the money. Doctors used to listen to their patients and if they run the standard tests and they came back normal, they would run more tests till they found out what was making their patients sick. Not anymore. Now it’s a pat on the head and send you to a psychiatrist. I’m beyond angry because I can’t find a good doctor anywhere! 😡

Sweetie, you need an Endocrinologist. Also, for your losing weight, I’m doing it now because we’re in the same boat, 1 meal a day is the problem. You need to eat a a healthy balance of meals breakfast, lunch, dinner including 3 in between snacks. Eating actually helps you lose weight! Try MyFitnessPal app to track food and any exercise that you can do. Housework is movement and is exercise!! Good luck!

phughesphoto I’ve tried doing 3 balanced meals a day plus healthy snacks in between for 2 weeks and I gained 5 lbs and then went back to eating once a day because I was afraid to see it go up to 20 extra pounds plus. That was a few years ago. Now I’m gaining 5 lbs a month give or take a lb or 2 and my eating habits are the same. I don’t eat junk food, fast food or fried food. I eat one healthy meal for dinner and my weight has gone off the charts and stupid doctors say stupid crap to me; like calories in calories out! I got my blood work done and it says I have metabolic syndrome and that I’m insulin resistant and he says that’s just a suggestion. And my progesterone is real low and my thyroid hormone is on the low side. He says if I eat one meal a day and drink 2 protein shakes a day that I should lose weight. That’s like putting a bandaid on a bad wound and hope it stops the bleeding! In my mind I’m thinking; why don’t you fix the problems so I can lose weight and be healthy. I know if I do the one meal and 2 shakes per day, I’m just going to continue gaining weight until my medical issues are resolved. But the doctors I see just want to keep me sick. I hope your having better luck with your doctors. Thank you for your suggestion on the app, I’ll check it out...👍🏻😌

I went to another endocrinologist and he said I did NOT have Hashimoto’s. He said that because my symptoms were sudden, I had gotten a subacute thyroiditis event. He took me off all medication. I am now 1 year off all meds and feeling much better. Can’t believe how two different endocrinologist gave me two diagnosis and two treatments.

It can be dealing with stress what you eat what you do if you smoke or drink. And I do feel like endocrinology I don't know why they specialize in anything when they suck. The most important exam that triggered the parathyroid\thyroid disease for me was a calcium test. The parathyroid and thyroid test were a little abnormal and brushed off by physicians but they would not run ALL the testing at once which caused many health problems due to physicians delaying testing.. . Started having kidney stones and a great smart doctor ran the calcium test and it was off the charts because my body was throwing off all the calcium and causing stones. By this time, I had already lost about 30 pounds in 30 days and continuing to lose about a pound a day and my muscle tissue deteriorated so much could not walk at all and now in a wheelchair and cant walk. Then by that stage, over a year later, diagnosed with hyper-parathyroidism and hyper-thyroidism and graves disease. All caused from more than a year of being misdiagnosed and delayed testing.. Insurance dictates what tests are run and since the "affordable" care system was implemented, physicians do not run all the tests they should be running and piece-milling tests over appointments that stretch out over a year which caused more damage due to returning every 3 months for more blood testing. Before the new healthcare system, docs were not afraid to run lots of testing at once. The new healthcare system is the reason for my disability! Because insurance paper pushers dictate our lives!

@ J. I can relate to that. I had multiple health issues growing up. The worst of them was my severe Epilepsy due to a crushed right temporal lobe that the doctor gave me when he delivered me. From 3 months on, I was having seizures. In March 1996, I went to London, Ontario, here in the province & they told me that the Epilepsy was caused by this injury. no doubt about it. They ran tests that proved it. MRIs, & all. They also told me that the main cause of my seizures was definitely my Epilepsy. BUT! It wasn't the ONLY CAUSE of them. They said that anyone who had Magnesium Levels & All my B Vitamin Levels as dangerously low as me, would be taking seizures for sure. Even a non-epileptic person. He said that I'd have to watch my levels of them for life. He also said the same about my thyroid problems & Iodine levels as well. They too, were way off & were causing me many seizures as well. He said that the majority of my seizures were caused by the Epilepsy, yes. But the rest were caused by the other problems he mentioned. I was shocked to hear him say that. Only because for years, I used to tell my Mom the exact same thing. And when I went there to see them about what they could do about the Epilepsy issue, that's exactly what they said. The doctors were treating me all wrong throughout my life. They were too busy giving me anti-convulsant meds for the Epilepsy. Instead of taking me off of them for good once they noticed no change what so ever in the amount of seizures that I was having. He said that they should've been treating my thyroid problems, pituitary problems, parathyroid problems, etc... instead of the Epilepsy. They said I was in dire need of hormone treatment, way more than I was these Anti-Convulsant Meds. I had osteoporosis at 16, was lactose intolerant by age 16 (diagnosed that is), but, had problems with milk products as young as 10 or so years old. I was never diagnosed with Gluten Sensitivity, but, know that I am since the age of 20 or so. Yet, when I think back to when I was as young as 6 or so when I tried my Mom's whole wheat, rye, & pumpernickel breads, which made me very sick afterwards. I now realize that I most likely was gluten sensitive my whole life, actually. I never could eat whole wheat, dark chocolate, etc... due to the fact that they're not refined foods. Anything that's too condensed or too pure like Whole Wheat is vs White Bread, are the kinds of foods that I never could tolerate. I'd get bloating, swelling throughout my ribcage, waist & belly button areas, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, migraine headaches, extreme itchiness, a rash from tp to bottom of both arms & legs, sore joints, severe nausea, indigestion, & fatigue. I felt & looked like I ate way too much & couldn't even get up or bend down to put your shoes on. It swelled & cause such pain. I'd have so much acid that it felt like it would take the whole month to rid me of it all. So not comfortable for a kid in school at any age, or for any adult at any age, either. So, yes. Don't let anyone tell you that you're wrong about your health, ever. Because, I went the 1st 11 years of my life without ever being diagnosed with thyroid problems. Yet, generations ago, they called thyroid problems an old ladies disease. Yet, I was 11 diagnosed, but, had symptoms as young as 4 or 5 years old. So, their statistics back then were totally off. In my family, both my parents have an older sister with thyroid problems, my Maternal Grandma had it, & I too, have it, amongst a few others in the family. So far, most of us are women with it. But, a cousin of mine was told that he has it too. So, it's something to keep in mind. Not all problems are genetic issues. Multiple things can cause thyroid problems like: trauma, diet, amongst other things other than having a genetic disposition of it. Hope this helps some. Take care & all the best. :)

The doctor I had at the time just dismissed it. I was fortunate to get a new GP in 2020 who did the tests, ultrasound and biopsy. It was caught in time, now there are 3 nodules. Scope after scope, no cancer found, my mercury filings was instead removed...After that i could slowly start to eat more so after all the years I still only eat a limited amount of vegetables and I can't even have fruit because of fructose and severe sugar allergy, no gluten and not even a drop of milk then my body will burn inside... So I've learned to eat grilled or cooked low carb vegetables. Herbs, grilled chicken that's antibiotics free and that was free roaming, occasionally eggs and pink salmon... And sometimes gluten free oats...As I got stronger in 2018 I started to do exercises and yoga, Pilate's, meditation, do breathing exercises and walk...eventually today, I've learned to take my pro biotic apart from my thyroid meds each morning... Pray and live with gratitude, take a mindful run . i am getting so strong. I run about 5 km ,6 mornings a week, on Saturday I spend in reflection and meditation and love my veggies, oh and rubbing and scrubbing my body with olive or coconut or almond oils...adding a drop of lavender or eucalyptus sometimes. I have also learned again to love life and stay in the present with a attitude of gratitude, I mean recovering from heavy metal poisoning having hypothyroidism does cost inner strength....

She listened to my story and even though I was adamant I was just depressed, she ordered blood work anyway (I look back and I'm sure she knew what was happening). Turns out I was severe hyperthyroid due to Graves. We were able to manage it for a while but ultimately, the decision came down to remove my thyroid :-(. Graves has also effected my right eye. In a few weeks, I'll start Tepezza injections and I'm hoping that double vision, swelling under the eyes and slight bulging will diminish.

My daughter was diagnosed with Graves’ disease when she was 13. Three years later she had her thyroid removed, as the medication used to control her thyroxine levels was no longer effective. After surgery, her calcium and vitamin D levels were very hard to control. 4 years later, and she still has chronic fatigue, but her th levels are stable. Her immunization system is severely compromised. She very easily picks up viruses. Also, this year my husband was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. He was having hand tremors, and had always had watering eyes. His grandmother had a ‘lump’ removed from her throat eons ago.....at least we know the family history of it!

I have had hypothyroidism (my antibodies have never been tested for, but it is likely due to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) for over 15 years. When I first had symptoms like extreme fatigue, mild depression, difficulty sleeping, and cold feet, my doctor completely dismissed the symptoms as due to the fact that I was a working mother w/ two young children. My feet were so cold at night, that I had to wear heavy socks. On my own, I started taking my basal metabolic temperature, which is the temperature that your body is at when you first wake in the morning, before you get out of bed. Normal temperature is 97.7 deg. F. My basal temperatures were 92.5 deg.F. The doctor didn’t know what to make of that-literally. He drew another thyroid test, which I believe was the TSH-a sort of indicator test of the thyroid health. It was 6. He said that to be considered hypothyroid, the TSH should be 12 or above. My symptoms grew worse over time. My thinking was foggy and it was very hard to exercise. I gained weight. Finally, a friend sent me to her endocrinologist who said that he could tell I was hypothyroid coming through the door. He tested the TSH, also, but also the thyroid hormones, T4 and T3. T3 is the active one. Both were so low he said they were in the basement. It took a year to get the medication dose right. What really helped my mood a lot was the addition of T3. There are several brand names for these products: Synthroid is a common brand for T4, or levothyroxine. Cytomel is a common brand name for T3, or liiothyronine.
I have had to have these doses changed every so often, but my TSH remains low at about 1. My thyroid hormones are much higher-truly “within normal limits.”
In modern endocrinology the upper “normal” dose of TSH is 2 not 6, like I was told by my ex-internist.
If you are getting thyroid tests done, make sure they tell you the results of not only TSH, but the levels of the thyroid hormones themselves, which can vary as to your situation, but should be at least 6.

      @deepattison9329 Před 3 lety +2

If your TSH is high and the T3 & T4 are low you need a complete workup. You are testing too low when the stimulating hormone is high normal. As with many things in the body one number is insufficient to tell the story. The ratio is needed for a complete picture.

He came back in with a doctor that told me I had thyroid cancer. It was the size of a racquetball.
I had surgery, lost ability to talk for 3 months and was never able to sing again. I had been a vocalist. I had RIA and was so sick everything I touched glowed in the dark. I took the color out of my leather couch when when I was able to come out of my room.
It came back in a new spot in my throat 13 years later. This time I was treated at a fancy clinic out of state. They did the surgery and later RIA. I felt it when I was swallowing. I'd been having the problems with the soles of my feet itching again. I knew this time what it was.
No one ever mention itching but was my only symptom.

my mum has underactive thyroid, and doctor told me that I have it too, I am taking the hormone substitute medication, but to be honest, the only thing I noticed, the only change, before /after I started taking medication is one thing only, and that I was loosing a lots of hair before I was diagnosed and I kept asking people why s that, my hairdresser said probably to do with iron and that I should check iron in the blood. well, doc said it s thyroid. and i must say that hair is fine now. My opinion is that thyroid got confused when I entered perimenopause at the age of 42, but then again...who knows how long it was there.
I started also taking vitamin K2, supposedly good for thyroid function, together with D3 vitamin for immunity (cause of this coronavirus thing too)....in any case, i didnt see much difference, except hair and feeling tired, but then again menopause has the same symptoms.... For some people I heard it does not really make any difference taking or not taking the hormone levotyroxine, and two friends do not even take it even though they have thyroid issue, they said it does not make any difference to them, they feel tired anyway. donno....

I have to go in the blood work ( yes, that's understandable) He has made me wait a couple of weeks before doing it, but I have edema in my legs again, gaining weight, exhausted. I told him going on and off of this medicine affects me mentally and he disagreed with me. I took some thyroid supplements from the health food store an that helped with the mental issues like depression, and thank goodness for that. My blood pressure is high again, and on the medication all these issues were resolved. The hair loss is still frustrating. Thanks, I wanted to write this in case anyone else is going to the same issues.

Thankfully the doctor did a thyroid peroxidase antibody test and it was quite elevated. I had Hashimoto’s and needed daily medication, and within about 48 hours almost all digestive problems stopped. The thyroid controls a lot of things.

My first symptoms were dry itchy skin, panic attacks feeling like someone is sitting on my chest, and pain in chest(something like heart attack). Later with time there were new symptoms like hair loss, weight loss, tiredness… They run some test and I was diagnosed with sub. hypo and hashimoto(my antibodies were veryyyy high).
Doctors were deff thinking i was crazy… Thank God I am not. Listen to your body and gut, guys.

The exhaustion, numbness in my extremities etc. continued for a few years. I completely changed my diet and juiced constantly. I got a bit better, but finally met a doctor in NY who was a chiropractor with Epstein Barr. He suggested a bunch of unknown, to me, supplements, and it changed my life.
