I owned a martial arts school for 20 years until covid shut me down in 2020. I did my research on what job I wouldn't lose or career shut down in case of another pandemic, I chose IT and started my whole life over at 53 years old. I did 2 years worth of core computer classes in 6 months. I went to school from 8 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday. If you really want to do something in life, nothing can stop you except for your own choices. Now I teach martial arts part time because I love it and my day jobs supports our family.

I set up a project that involves all three of those, and im also learning other skills

As a 42 year old female who has decided to try to get into IT here are the challenges: 1) Cost of learning (I'm starting with simple free courses). 2) Ageism: will it be a barrier to getting a job? 🤔 (I'm going grey), 3) Pay. It will mean a huge drop in income initially. That's why older people are very worried about taking the leap. I've also noticed a lack of Female British 40 something IT CZcamsrs so there's no role models either. There are specific challenges for older people ie: mortgage, car, commitments & that's what people worry about. I also suspect it might be more difficult for older women to get a good job than older men: there is a stereotype about post menopausal women... I wish I had thought about this when I was younger but I wasn't bought up with computers and I didn't think I was clever enough ...anyway nothing ventured nothing gained. Wish me luck.

I have 8 years of network security experience, 4 years as a security software developer and pen tester, 8 years as an independent software developer in Android and iOS and I cannot find a job. I have been rejected immediately by automated means and I believe it has to do with my age. By law, they cannot ask you your age, but I did notice that they ask for your graduation date and can more or less figure out how old you are. In my 20’s I could get an interview without issues. Now, they won’t even talk to me. Ageism is real and is a form of discrimination still tolerated in the US. Great video, I just wanted to give an alternate point of view. I have an opportunity over the summer to work on a project through the University to help secure critical infrastructure in my state. This could result in potential job offers but at the very least I will gain much needed experience in IT/security. It can be done I'm living proof. Will not be easy and everyone's path is different. At times will be overwhelming and you may think you aren't good enough or smart enough. But if you push forward and focus on your path whether that is school or certifications, you will succeed. I would say don't get into the field just for the prospect of money. You do have to love technology. I love the security side of things. You may love the networking side. Yes, it is a rewarding career path. Not for financial reasons alone. So, make sure you are passionate about the path you pick in IT.

I'm almost 40, and just now finishing up my software systems engineering degree (gard date 01/2023)... And I plan on doing free self studying of JavaScript, Python, Java and a few others as well as a few certifications along the way as well.. But my plan is to go job hunting for at tech company's in the summer of 2023.. I'm looking at you Microsoft... Lol...
Anyways, I probably took the longest path humanity possible for my IT career choices been studying for the 8 years other than just college... Putting myself in situations that most would be like, Wtf are you doing that for.. 🤣.... I went to almost every sector in Saw how technology was integrated into things like Construction, city's and towns ( utility), studied Web3 applications, solar, physics, Communications technology, and much much more... Why? Because it gives a better understanding of what it is your making... by having experienced in whatever field you're making an application or whatever... This helps you understand the requirements Gathering process better over time, and to better understand the work your doing....
Anyways, long story short... I may not be a seasoned software engineer at some big company, nor am I the smartest, but my logical thinking is way above others... Not sure if it's a generational thing, but I've noticed that the younger crowd ( born after 1995 ish) are lacking.. Not saying all of them are that way, but the older generation like myself ( somewhere between Gen X and the older millennial) are more sought after because of their mindset to get things done in a timely and efficient way.... (and no, it's not all of them, so stop typing that comment 🤣)...
Anyways, thanks for the video, hit me up sometime, ✌️

I studied all this and understand it, but I kept accepting lower paying jobs in accounting throughout my career because I was single and couldn't afford not to work. Now I'm old but I don't feel old, actually I feel smarter and understand more. I retired a year ago, and was completely out of debt and own my house. However, I had some major upgrades done to my HVAC system and now I'm in debt again and don't have enough savings. I now have a partner who helps, but I really need to go back to work. I'm worried no one will hire me because of my age. But I've been watching these videos and reviewing HTML, CSS and JavaScript along with Excel VBA and SQL. I understand all of it, and also have the accounting knowledge now. I worked for a company that designed accounting systems and started accepting jobs in accounting instead of coding. How can I break into this field or is it even possible. I will start trying to create some of websites and apps as you mentioned. When I took the Java class I was good at graphics.

I'm someone in the opposite spectrum since I'm 21 and still in college. I mainly focused on afterschool daycare. But an IT position opened up in the company and the old IT guy recommended to the bosses that I take it. They hired me and this will be my first full time job. I'm mainly trying to soak up any knowledge I can by watching videos and reading books and articles before I can get some real hands on experience.

Just to put things in perspective If you got into IT at 45 you could have a 20 (or 20+) year career in IT. Chances are that's a longer career than what you were doing before. Also your best way to break into IT could be through your current job. Assuming you work for a medium or larger size company I can almost guarantee you that regardless of the industry they have IT positions they desperately need filled. Make inquires and see what they require in terms of skills and or certifications. Most companies would rather hire in-house people even for these type of entry level positions (you already have an "in" so to speak). Some employers might actually pay for your certifications as well. The company I work for will pay for AWS training and cert tests. I know lots of other companies do that same.

I don't fear how old I am, I'm just pessimistic being over 50 and being stuck in manual work. I got a qualification in IT a year ago which covered virtual machines, networking, security etc. If Comptia + is supposed to be level 3, it was probably level 2. It was designed for people seeking entry level helpdesk jobs.. It didn't help. I've always been depressive and resentful anyway, which I know doesn't help, but nobody's interested if you don't have recent experience. It doesn't matter if I've got other qualifications or other work experience, if your most recent job was plonking things onto a conveyor belt, that's all you're seen as being capable of. I don't know what it's like in America, but that's what it's like here. It helps to have contacts everywhere I should think.
