This is how we make room in the hive. When population is growing rapidly, we alternate empty bars with bars with comb. Usually put about three new bars at a time.
Hello. In top bar hive...how do bees that stay above frames go out once you put roof down, since theres no space between frames. You have hole in roof?
Hi! :) With this particular hive I just wait for them to move out, I ask them to get moving, and I believe they somehow get it, and then I close it. I am the "move slow, ooze wonder/awe beekeeper" This hive is so amazing!!! They are gentle to no end. When you open them, the buzz tone is so calming, they surround you and it is almost as if they give you a welcoming hug. If they are ever upset or annoyed, they will head butt you several times as a warning, to let you know your welcome is soon to be expired :) They are an awesome hive to work with. Then again, I do not do much other than make sure they have what they need as a function of their wellbeing, not mine or that of production. I guess they are my pet hive :)
I’m want to build one of these, could you tell me…do you have to have anything attached to the handle or do they form the triangle shaped honeycomb themselves?
I just picked up a bee box exactly like this on the side of the road, and I’m curious about the frames and if the bees just overtime build out their hive naturally? I’m absolutely new to this so any information is greatly appreciated!
If you already have a honey extractor for langstroth style frames do you have to buy something else for this style? I would hate destroying comb too get honey
There are as many opinions as there are beekeepers. The two of us actually have some different philosophies, but the top bar gives the bees more freedom to build the way they want to. We both agree that when you get down to it, we are really just trying to help the bees to be successful.
I think one plus point is that you don't have to waste time or money on making frames, just pop a bar in there and you're done. I think another cool thing is that it might be less invasive when inspecting. With the boxes you open the whole thing and everyone is exposed. With this there is privacy, as you only open one bar at a time.
Nice attitude towards the bees. Respect 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
It definitely makes a difference! If I get in a hurry and rush, or maybe get grumpy about something, the bees respond accordingly!
Can you do another video on this hive please. I want to make one.
This is quite long with a solid divider at one end. What is the purpose of moving that bar? Can't see a queen excluder.
Nice box

I've seen quite a few with a hole in the side of the roof online.
👍👍👍

The shape depends on the shape of the hive body. I've seen a barrel used. The comb is U shaped.
