HopSlide, a game literally played in 2 windows

- what a perfect game to mention after the two windows puzzlescript game lol. thanks Sangchoo for recommending this game (I was recommended it an earlier time by No Face as well)
managore.itch.io/hopslide - Hry
ok but that Red puzzle is the most clever and meta puzzle I've ever seen that didn't involve direct manipulation of files
when is the red puzzle completed?
ok its at 6:28
I like that the premise of the game of using two windows primes your brain to consider the option of opening a third window, and then the solution primes your brain to think about window manipulation as a mechanism on other puzzles.
(Ahem) oneshot
I only watched Markiplier's playthrough
You can never really realize how good you are at slide puzzles until you see someone else do a slide puzzle.
I don’t even think i’ve heard of slide puzzle gaming tbh-
What’s a slide puzzle? Does it contain some catchy wagner?
Like that, this guy was struggling on something that I easily found out pretty quickly, and it is just the perks of having ADHD
To Icely's credit, how often do you have to narrate a video and be entertaining while doing a slide puzzle?
he's bad? he did it way easier than I ever could have
This game feels like it could have been made for the DS
Dang, someone said it before me 😅
I was thinking the exact same thing
cant solve the red puzzle
@@buddybearalex9310 or yellow
And here begins the "I was gonna say that" chain. Bc I too was gonna say that
Alright, this is pretty much my dream game. Wish it went on forever, I love this meta stuff :(
same, seriously love meta concept stuff but it is unfortunately so unexplored lol
I'm planning on making something similar to this tbh, might hit ya up on discord if I need ideas
@@noface7842 feel free to :)
@@IcelyPuzzles Didn't I reccomend this to u btw?
same
My jaw dropped when you figured out you could have 2 instances of the game running. This must have been a nightmare to code lol
it would be interesting to know that tbh, like how hard was it actually to code those functions that check for other windows appearing? could you make a game that checked for the position of *notepad* or something? haha
@@IcelyPuzzles yes you could, with GetWindowRect in windows
@@chocolateimage that's cool :D
I imagine all instances of the game communicate with a central background program/database thats mainly only updated by special events, like room position changes and button presses and the like.
Were it more involved/active id call it a proper server
@@raspberryjam it is a proper server even if it were not so involved
this is honestly one of the coolest fucking games I've seen in a lifetime
This is one of the most ingenious games EVER
i agree :D
I wonder if the 3 jumps in green could’ve been solved by opening 3 hops and having each of the solutions on them rather than changing the single one for each jump.
I think you mean slides. Hop is the one you walk around in.
@@theomni1012 oh yeah I meant slide
I bet a larger game like this would be very popular
It would be cool if it was just one game but that game simulated a desktop that had the programs on them, then there could be an unlocking system where you gain more programs as you play
there is no game wrong dimension is much like that, it's not that long and it is somewhat linear though, but I liked it :)
Hypnospace Outlaw is like that.
kind of reminds me of pony island
not the same thing, but check out Kingsway
this game looks like it could've been a ds game
the game itself has a really unique concept and the textures do remind me of something on ds hardware (not in a bad way) and makes use of two screens
ds stuff aside, this game just has one of the most unique concepts of two panels i've seen. i'd love to somehow see this expanded
pro tip: don't open too many instances for no reason, you're gonna lose your mind figuring out which slide window connects to which hop window
They all connect to the hop window that was most recently focused.
@@donovanmahan2901 this wasn't the case for me, but also I ran it through wine so it may have not worked correctly
I had to look up a playthrough to solve the red puzzle tbh, it's a fun as heck game that was made by someone who make games I really like
Funny seeing you here. I think you did the MashUp Jam at the same time as me and I see you messaging in the discord all the time :)
@@i_am_phibian Oh hey phibian
This is such a cool concept. I've seen a few games with somewhat similar gimmicks but I really like this one.
This has a similar room connect puzzle as 'the pedestrian' although needing to run two instances of the Hop portion was incredibly unique! Can't even begin to imagine how that could have been coded.
honestly, probably not that hard. i suspect that both instances send events to slide.exe and slide.exe probably broadcasts block connection changes to all hop.exe instances. the more impressive thing to me was the glitch box, though im sure theres a simple method that can check for it.
the creativity behind the game is what makes it cool
This reminds me of an old Flash game called "Continuity" where you can swipe cards around with small chunks of the level inside of them and the little guy you control can move through each card. Neat idea.
This kind of genre, meta multiwindow, is one i like. It's creative.
Imagine a metroidvania built this way
metroivania is a song dude
@@The_Dr_Fate metroidvania is a game genre??? Maybe you're thinking of megalovania
@@immigrantmammoth5162 yes, megalovania
@@The_Dr_Fate metroidvania is a game genre, megalovania is a song
That would be incredible
that's awesome! a while back i was thinking about making a simple experimental 2D platformer demo kinda like this, involving screen-rapping, where you could resize the window to adjust the boundaries of the screen-rap. so this is a neat proof of concept showing what you can do with window interactions
The same developer made another game called "Windowframe" which is along those lines.
@@fluffycritter oh cool! i'll check it out
5:18 when u played the game "pushing u" it pushed my level "u" into hopslide
thank you for bringing this to people's attention, i found it in 2020 and im really glad its getting the recognition it deserves
glad to hear it I really enjoy bringing lesser known puzzle games to light :p
The moment you saw those wires and went, "oh my god!"
This would be perfect as a ds game
Was just thinking that
i LOVED this game, it's incredible. what an awesome find, thanks to you and youtube recommendations!
edit: i..... i think i will have no time for anything... because i have acquired a new hobbie.
looking through your channel and playing the games. wow. this is an incredible find that has doomed me to eternity. i will forever love and hate you. thanks
This is exactly what the Wii U was made for
I love games that interact with the game window, they're always so creative
fullscreen users have entered the chat
Imagine if there were more puzzles once you try to scale the windows of either Hop or Slide
yeah resizing would be so awesome hahaha
Your voice is like.. nicely imperfect, if you know what i mean? It’s like comforting in a way, as it’s not exactly perfect, making it feel more human.
There are no complements about this game and your ingenuity that haven't already been said. Incredible!
thank you! :D
I would LOVE to see this as a homebrew game for the DS
it would be cool :)
This would be bomb on the 3DS
The was a game similar to this concept on there

I think a secret area where you overlap blocks in multiple slide windows is a missed opportunity. Like you can make two copies of slide, set the RED and GREEN's left entrance to align with the BLUE's right exit and then enter that area. Same with the BLUE and GREY's bottom entrance aligned with YELLOW's top exit.
i feel like these two windows will consist of hopping and sliding
I'm surprised the dev decided to go with two separate .exe files. It would be much simpler to code as a single program.
it kinda adds to the cool and interactive factor though
Reason its two and not one is because you don’t need a second slide window but its required to have a second one for the red puzzle. So it makes sense.
that ruins the whole point of the game
Woah, this is just like the Sifteo I had as a kid!! I love to see nostalgic ideas from the past modernized and transformed into something else super cool! :D
I just realised, this would be perfect on a ds
it would hahaha, although in some ways desktop stuff can do more tricky stuff
@@IcelyPuzzles of course, especially because of the technical limitations of the hardware
Wow thats a good game idea maybe mix the 2 windows
this video hit the algorithm jackpot holy shit
the tetris and minesweeper video things are also doing well :D
This is actually really cool, it feels like an old DS game.
The y is purple because you have to go through red to get to blue, red + blue = purple
oh man I played this ages ago when it first came out and I was trying to find it again but couldn't remember the name of it. And here it is, in my CZcams recommendations!
awesome, glad to have that make a comeback :p
So slide is the worlds that you move around to connect through each other and hop is the person trying to get through this by going from one world to another, nice
yeah :D
I ran into a bug with the blue puzzle.
It didn't work until I relaunched Slide, probably because I opened two Slides at once.
This is a great puzzle to be honest. I found this video, then after like 30 sec downloaded the game and finished without any hints. I like how every fragment needs its own approach (and the red one got me too like "no way it actually worked", even better, two windows constructed a whole room as i led characters to the buttons)
This was born for the DS;
Hop goes on top,
and Slide goes on the bottom!
Thae red puzzle was so cool, wow.
I never woulda figured out the window glitch being intended :O
GALAXY BRAIN.
Imagine if physics corresponded to the movement of the rooms, like you can extend a jump to the right, by sliding the room to the left,
or jump higher by sliding the room downward
I would not be smart enough to go anywhere past the tutorial
this would win any gamejam
I played a similar Flash game, where you can switch between a slide screen and a platformer screen with the space bar.
Finally a full playthrough
HopHopSlide
Reminds me of Terry Cavanagh's At a Distance, except At a Distance is 3D and it's designed for 2 players. I thought it might be from the same game jam but apparently it's its own thing!
on the slide window it kinda looks like a puzzle that was used in a roblox game called a roblox quest elements of robloxia where you need to do some puzzles by moving the rooms in order to fight the secret boss
DUDE THIS IS SUCH A COOL CONCEPT
it is :D
Ngl has major ds vibes and I'm loving it
This gave me an idea for a javascript game...
The game "The Pedestrian" did some cool stuff with a similar concept
That’s an awesome little game
I want more games like this
this feels like a potential DS homebrew ngl
This reminds me so much of that game Fez.
Nintendo: *preparing documents to sue this guy for bringing NDS to PC*
this is what i wold think of emulating ds games wold look like
This is my first time seeing your videos and im already blown away man, Good work! 👍
thank you thank you :D
@@IcelyPuzzles No problemo! :D
yay the hopslide
it's very clever game (especially the red area)
so this is what happens if you run your chess website capitalistically
lmaooo
Omg this game is actually cool I just thought it's gonna be just the "required to run two separate windows to work" but no there's more to it and I'm amazed
yeah it's really amazing, made great use of the multi windows!
This concept blew my mind but I realised there's probably a simple way to do this
I'm guessing the slide program just tells the hop program whenever it's window is moved or a room is slid
That was a very fun game to watch, thank you alcorythm for showing me this channel :)
It reminds me of a 3DS Game called The Delusion of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind
That's a very cool puzzle!
Interesting concept
Finally, a good reason to have two monitors
That's really cool and really smart
Thought there were going to be two lockpick videos in a row
THIS is what we needed on wii u
you know, there really oughta be some kind of handheld game console that has two screens or something. Just a shame there's no product like that made by, say, Nintendo in the early 2000s or something
This would make such a great DS game
This game’s primary mechanic is extremely similar to the flash game, “Continuity”. I’m sure this game’s dev was inspired by it.
I'm not sure it's that resemblant but the origin of the game actually comes from a remix of another 'prequel' game I guess you can say
@@IcelyPuzzles a 2d platformer with room layouts that can be manipulated through a slide puzzle? It’s an extremely niche mechanic. I’m pretty sure one inspired the other. Obviously hopslide mastered the mechanic and made it go beyond the scope of Continuity, but it’s still the same fundamental feature
You should have the second window controlling everything be strategic and you have to think before making a move and if you make a move thats not possible than your game 'corrupts' as in slowly breaking the game and giving you a countdown timer
This would have slapped on the Nintendo DS
So basically a Nintendo DS game, someone should port it to that system if they can
i imagined that the copy playerline would crash when the copy interacts with the real one, either that or time shenanigans occurs
Thats the most cleaver game i have ever seen
:D
Very interesting game idea 👍
imagine this as a co op game
This game is so cool
this is just like that final puzzle from skyward sword
the nintendo DS has been alerted of your location
Reminds me of that one famous console family.
Reminds me of that one area in Dawn of Sorrow.
This is similar to the pedestrian in terms of gameplay.
Pretty rare to see new novel video games nowadays
Perfect DS game
Quick, have the dev do 3DS release before the eshop closes!
side 1: Hop side2: Slide
A game like this would work amazingly on a Nintendo DS
If you are interested in a game similar to this you could play pedestrian though it doesnt have the different windows
