Spain in the 15th Century had 30% of its population in monasteries and convents. Has God just called less and less people nowadays? Or rather, are so many people unaware of God's calling, and this ignorance comes forth in other pseudo-monastic outlets in day-to-day life?

I think what happened is people realized they could address this need for introspection without the church and so they left. I think we all need to take time to introspect because it allows our minds to function properly. However, I think the church tried to exploit this need by laying religious claim to it. It worked when they were able to burn anyone who disagreed, but now their reign of terror is ended and people are realizing they can do all of that stuff on their own.

Also the Church with their obsession with healing ministries and wanting every soul to be completely healed of their sins and wounds I think have made people become discouraged and not want to pursue their calling from the Lord. But instead think to themselves well I have to live in the modern world and I have to grow up, while the call is a genuine call but our lack of trust in the healing of the person in their vocation has been lost because out of a misplaced fear from spiritual fathers. Very interesting. Thank you.
