    When they flooded the Roman Colosseum from naval battles, the underground levels were not even made yet they were actually using what was once the man made lake from Emperor Nero Palace.
    Yeah, the Roman Colosseum was built for the people and to solidify that fact the Colosseum was built directly on top of the man made lake that Emperor Nero had made for himself to use.
    And they actually use the same underground plumbing that was used to fill Nero lake to fill and then quickly drain the Colosseum of water

      I think you may be right. I've seen plenty of ancient naval battles depicted on screen. But never in a flooded Colosseum setting.
      This is also the first time I've ever seen a Naumachia depicted in scale model form.

    • @leoburton77
      @leoburton77 Před 19 dny +3

      It was going to be, but Amazon Prime’s Those About To Die just pipped it to the post, with one episode showing the naumachia, in which they had crocodiles attack the vessels. A bit more believable than the (what looks to be) sharks in the Gladiator 2 trailer! If it turns out to be sharks, I’m walking out. 😂

    The Colosseum was designed with a complex system of tunnels, aqueducts, and drainage channels underneath the main arena floor. When these structures were flooded, they could transform the Colosseum into a temporary lake or pool, allowing the staging of naval battles and the display of aquatic animal hunts.
    The process involved several steps:
    Blocking the main drainage channels to prevent water from escaping.
    Diverting water from nearby aqueducts into the substructure of the Colosseum.
    Raising the arena floor with removable wooden planks or platforms to create a watertight basin.
    Filling this basin with water, typically to a depth of several feet, creating a large body of water within the Colosseum.
    The scale of these naval re-enactments was impressive, with ships, crews, and even small islands constructed within the flooded arena. Naumachiae were grandiose spectacles that demonstrated the Romans' engineering prowess and their ability to transform the Colosseum into a vast, temporary aquatic stage

    They used the corks from all the wine they drank back then to stop the flooding of the tunnels, they were into recycling even back then. 😂😂😂
    Always such a great job. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised about two things, #1 it's not like you to forget the eyes on the tiny ship, and #2 after mentioning filling the area with the crowd I thought with your attention of detail that you would at least do 40,000 attendees maybe not a full house but at least 40,000. 😂😂😂😂
    But seriously I am always amazed by what you build, keep it up, it makes my Sunday. 👍👍👍

    We know that during the Colosseum’s first year it would have been technically possible to flood it with enough water for ships to sail. However, after the construction of the hypogeum-the vast network of tunnels and storage rooms under the floor, built during the reign of Domitian-holding water battles at the Colosseum would no longer have been possible. For that reason, it’s very difficult to get evidence on how the flooding would have worked.

    Hi Boylei, two questions:
    1) would you ever consider doing a video on an armour model, such as a 1/35 or 1/48 scale plane or tank?
    2) what's your opinion on Italieri kits? I'm pretty new to modelling outside of simpler stuff like gunpla, and other people in my hobby club say Italeri is of. questionable quality. I'm guessing this is probably just an armour issue as I don't think there are any diorama modelers like you in the club but I'd like to know your brand opinions. (also anyone else in the comments with experience please weigh in)

    • @Boylei
      @Boylei  Před 23 dny

      Thanks for your questions!
      1) I’m definitely open to it, but don’t have the time or patience to do anything as good as most armor/military specific modelers. Nightshift is my recommendation for that!
      2) The kit in this video was the best one I’ve worked with from Italieri. They are definitely lower quality than a brand like Tamiya.
