In 92, Roll the Bones Tour, in Indianapolis, Alex broke his B string during Superconductor, which as far as I recall was in a nonstandard tuning. He wrapped it around the headstock, slid up the neck and refingered in a different position, and kept playing. He played the keyboard bridge while Geddy did that bass bit, then went back to guitar. The tech literally came running up, looped a new one over his neck, and took the old one. Alex switched necks between chords and didn't miss a beat.

Wrong, in an interview with Lerxst where he went over all of his equipment for the Time Machine tour, he showed a single Les Paul that he said was tuned down to D# and it is used exclusively for the Overture and Temple Of Syrynx/Finally in order to help out Geddy on vocals, otherwise all other guitars are tuned in E standard.
There are a thousand myths claiming this song and that song are drop tuned and some even claiming every song is down tune for Geddy’s vocal, but you heard it straight from the Lerxst mouth that only a single Les Paul is down tuned for the 2112 part of the concert. That is the only song Geddy struggles with vocally. Anything else you hear is bullshit or a myth.
This is why he must wait so long for this to be restrung, it is the only one he can’t simply swap out for a different guitar. You’d think he’d keep at least one backup detuned for this kind of occasion, but breaking a string is probably so rare, they never thought to have one detuned to D#.
You have to admit the man can dance, like Fred Astaire, or Flintstone, one of those? I get them confused, but I think Fred Flintstone may be the closer match. Gooooo Lerxst! Kick off those shoes so we can hear the pitter patter of those bare feet slapping the floor. He can probably get his car up to speed with those feet.

@@MsBenlane I wonder who that 'star'was. If someone takes a pic at a concert if they have been advised not to, it's not the 'star's' concern, but tour management and venue security and even then, only if cell phone video and pic restrictions are clearly in place and two thirds of the audience is standing there like idiots with their phones in the air recording the show..
No performer in their right mind would stop a show because 'someone', meaning 'one guy' took a phone pic.

You think its bad for Alex. I saw these guys in LA last year and Neil broke the head on his snare drum. You can't just hand him a new drum. His tech was working furiously to get it repaired. The boys were in between songs so the stage was black except for the tip of Geddy's cigarette. He was getting a little antsy for the show to resume. I thought Neil's play seemed stress after that but he seemed to relax after his solo. We don't mind their flubs because their music has gotten most of us through tough times.

Alex can’t just swap here of all his guitars or he probably would just grab another. I saw an interview where Lerxst said that one Les Paul is the only guitar drop tuned to D# to help Geddy out vocally by the half step drop.
I have heard so much bullshit from people in the comments claiming that they down tune for Natural Science, Closer To The Heart and many other songs, some going as far as to claiming every Rush song is down tuned because of Geddy’s vocals.
of course it takes me two seconds to pick up a guitar or even launch GarageBand on the same iPad and check any of these bogus comments since I know every Rush song and what key they were originally recorded in.
Most of all, I just trust my ear since I have perfect intonation as long as a don’t have a cold or something. Now, I have it verified byAlex that there is only one drop tuned guitars in his entire live lineup of guitars and that is a single Les Paul used for the Overture and Temples Of Syrynx.
You heard it here first, well you actually can hear it in that interview about his set up for the Time Machine tour and Lerxst doesn’t lie. He might bullshit around a bit, but takes his guitar shit seriously.
One thing you have to admit, the man can dance, like Fed Astaire, or Flintstone, it’s one Fred or another. Either way, it’s a sight to behold.

Something happened on 2112 in Houston too - but, typical Lerxst, being that it was the last show goes up to the mike and laughs and says, "That guy"s fired!" In fact, unless my memory has faded, he threw his defective one to the tech while the tech threw the new one simultaneously. The guitars passed each other in flight. Barely missed a beat.
But in this video, his tech must have been asleep at the wheel. You can see how it irritates him.

As a drummer I know nothing about guitar gear, but he ALWAYS seems to have issues. I wonder why. I've never seen a guitarist over the course of years live who has the issues he seems to hvae. Is it the roadie? Is his set-up too crazy? ANy thoughts?

I know Geddy ran everything direct in their late period, meaning NO onstage amps, speakers or monitors. This is smart because it minimalizes mishaps and if there ARE problems, at least he knows it won't be a fried speaker or one of a billion cables all over the stage. Maybe Alex still has more of those variables. Here is another theory; have you noticed that Alex is notorious for grinding his pic into the string to make the harmonic shriek at some point in almost every solo? its a wonderfully, scary thing that is also harder on strings. he needs to stick to heavy gauge strings if he is doing alot of that.

This is how you know your guitar tech is on mushrooms.

Alex runs a complicated and unconventional setup unfortunately, with lots of potential points for failure. Figuring out which part died out of 30 possibilities can take time. Is it the guitar? wireless pack? one of his 3 amps? his axefx? TC chorus? power conditioner? apple mainstage? midi switcher? wah? speaker simulator? volume pedal? a random cable in the giant signal chain? Alex uses an old school approach and runs a lot of stuff in series, so any one component failing can take out the whole rig. His amps and digital effects have redundancy, but everything else doesn't.

32 of Rush shows, this was the first time I’ve seen anything like it.

@@BxFletcher I saw him have problems in Nashville once. There is a video on CZcams setting up for Montreal show that gets detailed on techs and what they deal with.
Alex I think has most room for problems to arise.
Then again you can break a guitar string easier than a bass string or drum head.
