  • @Shelbyrei

    In my experience, the term "You're sleeping on it!" used in the way it is in this video is mostly used with Gen Z, hence why some people in the comments are saying they've only heard it used in the sense of thinking about it overnight. It has two different meanings!

      I'm a millennial and I use it sometimes. But, it does seem to be used more by Gen Z. Still, Gen Z loves to make me feel old, even if I am aware of some of their "slang". lol

    People in the comments saying that „sleeping on something“ means thinking on it are right, but... also not around a lot of young ppl on the internet apparently 😅 literally go to any kpop musicvideo (especially less well known ones) and everyone in the comments will be like „this group isn‘t a bed, so stop sleeping on them“. It‘s really common these days to see it meant as „stop missing out on them“ and English isn‘t even my first language 😅 so while the comments aren‘t wrong, Mikan is right with its slang meaning

      that certainly is a meaning of "sleeping on it " but in this video shes referring to the "slang" version of sleeping on smth. it's kinda hard to explain, but basically, if there's a show that's underrated you can say " woah this so is so slept on " meaning so many ppl aren't paying enough attention to it. It's practically like " ur sleeping instead of paying attention to the great thing "
      or like she said..
      "have u tried the new starbucks drink ? it's so slept on"
      meaning the drink is really good but not many ppl appreciate it enough
      haha it's kinda hard to explain but that's the best way I could think of.

    Fun video! Slight alterations to how I think about those slang words living in the pnw west coast of America. To “sleep on it” means that I need to (or should) sleep on the idea to make sure that I am making the right decision. Instead of “sus” I heard folks say “that person is acting suspish” hahaha. But very much the same meaning. And when I think of “thirsty”, I think of a girl posing for sexy photos on social media to gather attention, or writing multiple boys at the same time to try and lock on anyone of them ... for a date ie: for attention doesn’t matter who gives it to them lmbo hahahah. But basically very similar to how you described it. So funny how in different parts of the world or even one country everyone can have a slight twist on the meaning of a slang word. Super fun and I think you should do these more often! Hugs

      I’m from the pnw as well, and I’m guessing you don’t live an area where AAVE is commonly used? Most of the slang words she used and the definitions were made and used by black people, and yours seem to be the more “white” version of them for lack of a better word. It’s interesting to see how different races speak in the same place. Or inner cities vs. everywhere else.

    I agree with all the people saying "to sleep on it" usually means to defer a decision to allow more time to consider it. I believe your usage is newer (or, perhaps British usage). Than what I grew up saying. I've never seen it used to mean "missing out", even on the Internet. And, I've been using networked computers since before .com or http were things.

    • @koo-core7274
      @koo-core7274 Před 3 lety +2

      I actually think it’s AAVE, not British slang. That may be why you don’t know it. AAVE is commonly spoken by black people in America in more urban areas, though you can find it other places in America as well. It can be considered newer slang as it was just recently globalized like most AAVE has been due to the internet. Everyone (young people, esp. on the internet ) uses black slang now, so that’s why it may be considered “new” to many.

      That's not slang lol. Also that is not how the slang term is used. One might say "Why have I been sleeping on their talent" or "I wish the general public would stop sleeping on this game". Basically equating not knowing about something to being asleep, and then when you realize the greatness of something you are awake, no longer sleeping on it.
