"what even is slang" i have never heard anything more relatable
You don't know what slang is lmao
Same
@@KBShanto11 they aren’t being serious 😐
In my experience, the term "You're sleeping on it!" used in the way it is in this video is mostly used with Gen Z, hence why some people in the comments are saying they've only heard it used in the sense of thinking about it overnight. It has two different meanings!
Yeah I use the other one but I get this meaning too.
I just realised I must be getting old because I've never heard it used that way before
I'm a millennial and I use it sometimes. But, it does seem to be used more by Gen Z. Still, Gen Z loves to make me feel old, even if I am aware of some of their "slang". lol
I'm a millenial, and I've never used it in this way before, although when she explained it, it made sense 😂
most of these phrases are NOT made by gen z. its aave - please get it right.
Not mikans japanese channel being named "Mikan's japanese channel" 😭😭😭😭👉

hahaha its british!

I know what bellend is and use it often but I couldn’t explain what it means.
I still don’t know hahahah!
"For example yasuki is my simp"
I died.
Saying you’re sleeping on something is saying you’re not giving it the recognition it deserves and you’re missing out
Bougie comes from the the old French word “bourgeois” which implies social climbing and materialistic.
yeah I think bougie can be kinda negative like acting more rich than you are
yeah, really changes meaning if you use it about a person or an item...
The “shuga daddy” ended me oh my god 😂😂
HOW IS YOUR JAPANESE SO GOOD OMG PLEASE-
not u watching me stumble through this video half dead near the end thinking my japanese is good shdkshfkdsjf HAHAHA
@@mikanmandarin me who's been studying Japanese for months and can hardly frame a sentence : 👁️👄👁️?!?!?!?
she’s better than me- and it’s my first language...I forgot it when I learned English I think my brain has a 1 language capacity

People in the comments saying that „sleeping on something“ means thinking on it are right, but... also not around a lot of young ppl on the internet apparently 😅 literally go to any kpop musicvideo (especially less well known ones) and everyone in the comments will be like „this group isn‘t a bed, so stop sleeping on them“. It‘s really common these days to see it meant as „stop missing out on them“ and English isn‘t even my first language 😅 so while the comments aren‘t wrong, Mikan is right with its slang meaning
In french we also use “to be hungry” the same way you guys use thirsty!
Used like J'ai faim or je suis faim?
The literal translation is 'to have hunger' basically
My native language being English and yet i still don’t know what half these words mean👀🤦♀️
It means 2 things. Your too old or your too young💀
@@Futured2006 I’m from Canada and I knew all of them except belland
thats fine! most of these are aave not "american slang"
@@Futured2006 I’m Jamaican living in America...those words are used here except for bellend
Okay tbh i was being a bit over dramatic with “half” but i dont know all of them 👁👄👁

Always Adore your content Mikan!! And I am so psyched to watch your Japanese Channel WHAT!? Currently, I am studying Japanese at my Uni. It's been a blast! It's going to be so awesome getting some listening practice in from your videos!! My plan is to study abroad once more to Japan. Such an awesome country! Anyways... みかんさん、頑張ってください!おえんする!
I thought to sleep on it meant to think about it and decide in the morning 🤣
That's also another meaning for it, though that's more of a Standard English phrase (like "it's raining cats and dogs") as opposed to slang
YESSS I loveee your japanese content!
I giggled the entire video. This was hilarious. Hoping ur Japanese Channel will also include eng title! And even if not it might help me to understand japanese better :D ( Wanna learn it too ) ;w; ♥
I love your channel 🥰
"To sleep on something" means to give someone time to think about something.
"Do you want to go to the concert next month?" "I'm not sure. Let me sleep on it and I'll get back to you with my answer."
That’s one of the meanings but not the slang! I described how it’s used on the internet
I've only heard it the way mikan described. No idea it meant to think about something too.
That’s not the slang, that’s the other meaning of the phrase. Sleep on as on a surface/object versus sleep on as on a thought/idea/proposition.
@@CometDancerr It's an idiom...
This is so fun, you have such good friends
The word “simp” had got me. “Simp” = “housekeeper” 😂😂
hi mikan! i love your videos so much

I love when you speak japanesse. It is adorable!
I loved this video. U should do one where u have ur friends quiz u and u have to guess the slang in Japanese
Would you ever consider making videos teaching Japanese? Like a series or something, I think it would be so interesting!
0:20 omg the laugh- I almost shit my pants cuz it was too hilarious💀✋
Whenever I have heard the term "you are sleeping on something" it was always like you thinking about it
Oh there is also an expression like that as well. Like “just sleep on it and tell me what you think later”or “I’ll sleep on it and tell you how I feel tomorrow ”
that certainly is a meaning of "sleeping on it " but in this video shes referring to the "slang" version of sleeping on smth. it's kinda hard to explain, but basically, if there's a show that's underrated you can say " woah this so is so slept on " meaning so many ppl aren't paying enough attention to it. It's practically like " ur sleeping instead of paying attention to the great thing "
or like she said..
"have u tried the new starbucks drink ? it's so slept on"
meaning the drink is really good but not many ppl appreciate it enough
haha it's kinda hard to explain but that's the best way I could think of.
You girls are so funnyyyyy 😂😂😂 cute friends! 💖💖💖💖
Your Japanese is so Good! I am so amazed😍
Your Japanese has gotten so much better over the years
Fun video! Slight alterations to how I think about those slang words living in the pnw west coast of America. To “sleep on it” means that I need to (or should) sleep on the idea to make sure that I am making the right decision. Instead of “sus” I heard folks say “that person is acting suspish” hahaha. But very much the same meaning. And when I think of “thirsty”, I think of a girl posing for sexy photos on social media to gather attention, or writing multiple boys at the same time to try and lock on anyone of them ... for a date ie: for attention doesn’t matter who gives it to them lmbo hahahah. But basically very similar to how you described it. So funny how in different parts of the world or even one country everyone can have a slight twist on the meaning of a slang word. Super fun and I think you should do these more often! Hugs
I’m from the pnw as well, and I’m guessing you don’t live an area where AAVE is commonly used? Most of the slang words she used and the definitions were made and used by black people, and yours seem to be the more “white” version of them for lack of a better word. It’s interesting to see how different races speak in the same place. Or inner cities vs. everywhere else.
Kawaii, I have never seen mikan speaking with japanese !
Girl, your Japanese is amazing!
Your friends are so cute!!
It's literally 10:30 pm in India I love your channel since a year or so I saw notification and just clicked on it love from India ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I LOVED THIS
PLEASE MAKE MORE JAPANESE VIDEOS
I want to learn japanese 🍙🍡 for sooo long but I only 10 word 😭 but watch this I going to try again
You guys are so different and unique from each other, and at the same time so beautiful and cute
The best way I can explain “sleeping on” is in a music way bc of kpop lmao. So like if you like a certain group or artist but feel like they lack the attention they deserve you could say “stop sleeping on [insert artist here]”
Best video of 2021 lmao
I agree with all the people saying "to sleep on it" usually means to defer a decision to allow more time to consider it. I believe your usage is newer (or, perhaps British usage). Than what I grew up saying. I've never seen it used to mean "missing out", even on the Internet. And, I've been using networked computers since before .com or http were things.
I actually think it’s AAVE, not British slang. That may be why you don’t know it. AAVE is commonly spoken by black people in America in more urban areas, though you can find it other places in America as well. It can be considered newer slang as it was just recently globalized like most AAVE has been due to the internet. Everyone (young people, esp. on the internet ) uses black slang now, so that’s why it may be considered “new” to many.
@@koo-core7274 Yes! It is in the Urban Dictionary with that as the 3rd usage. You've nailed it. Thanks Koo-core!
An oldie like me thought ''sleep on something'' would be used like ''i need time to think, so Imma sleep on it, like the idea.''
Such a funny video 😁😊
Sis really added “lives rent free in my head” HAHAHAHAHA UR FUNNY 😂😂😂😂
Lol this was actually helpful. I knew the words but not the meaning 😅
You guys kinda look like the powderpuff girls with the hair colors, it's cute (:
I'd simp for Mikan. ❤️
💛 friendship goals
the way hey all laughed in sync at the beginning 🤣🤣
✨This was so very wholesome✨
For me, “I’ll sleep on it” means I’ll think about it, maybe it’s different for British slang haha
same here! I find it so interesting that “I’ll sleep on it” and “I am/you are sleeping on it” seem so similar, but they have such different meanings !
Ohh I didn’t even think of that meaning...where I live (us) to be slept on can mean either to think about something, like, “Ill sleep on it and then decide,” or it can mean somethings ignored, like, “you really be sleeping on Louis Tomlinson,” but that’s like teen slang which depending on your age could be why you don’t know it. Hope this helped:)
Same
I’m British, but I still use “I’ll sleep on it” as in ‘I’ll think about it’ as well, as does everyone I know-
That's not slang lol. Also that is not how the slang term is used. One might say "Why have I been sleeping on their talent" or "I wish the general public would stop sleeping on this game". Basically equating not knowing about something to being asleep, and then when you realize the greatness of something you are awake, no longer sleeping on it.
Did anyone suddenly get unsubscribed from the channel? I was wondering why are there no new videos and then I noticed that YT unsubscribed me :
In California, to sleep on something means you’re missing out. Usually I’ve seen it in the context of songs, artists, tv shows, etc. Like if a song is a really good song but hasn’t gotten much exposure, I’d say “y’all sleeping on this song”
have you ever taught Japanese on your channel? if not could you please do that? i would love to learn Japanese 🥺💕✨
ノエはめちゃかわいい!
I’ve never heard of bellend so I learned something today!!
Rent free in my mind means that it is something you love so much that it doesn't need to pay to be there, it causes no disturbance to be thought about... if it is a disturbance, it is something that should be paying rent and isn't but is still there in your mind
I use "It's gucci :)" so often lol
This is so cute! Are your friends on insta?
Omg the dream teams back 😩😭🙌🏼
are they from kansai?! heard some kansai ben! I also didn't know bellend 😂😂
ミカン~ちゃん の 日本語 チャネル‼️

ありがとございます m(>///
THIS VIDEO IS SO CUTE
日本語チャンネルも絶対人気になると思いますわ👍
Idk if this helps but my understanding of “sleeping on something” is that something is underrated
Me: I should really work on my book
Mikan: how about no
I really enjoyed the video though ❤️
your hair looks extra cute with red color
Mikan: すすすすすすそう 😂
Anime has prepared me for these quick subtitles 😎
Sleeping on something is like not keeping up with trends but it's specific to one specific trend
Watching them all repeat the word gucci at 9:42 is the funniest thing to me...
So cute, i wish Mikan was all mine :3
to sleep on something
for me it's to delay something
Can someone tell me what's the meaning of "Akugare na hito" (if i heard it correctly)
And how do you write in Japanese?
Will your other channel have English subtitles or have subtitles enabled in settings?
Noe is adorable
