Is the Hyundai i30N Performance a GTi killer ?

  • With good looks, 275PS and a soundtrack of rumbles, cracks and bangs as you accelerate the Hyundai i30N Performance delivers on so many levels. The questions is, can it really go toe to toe with it's revivals and come out on top ?
    Thanks to Hyundai UK, I have been driving this car for the last few days and in this film I bring to my conclusions. From a driving and performance point of view this car is certainly impressive, however it is not without fault. If you are thinking of buying this car then you need to watch this video...

      Hyundai garage must have lied to me they said I could have one in 3 weeks as there was a storage area in England full of them. Coming off the boat and not selling as quick as they'd like was the reason they said. They gave me some quotes and I understood why its not selling

    I really liked the review, but I just can‘t understand the brand snobbery
    Hyundai is one of the biggest car brands in the world.
    All cars for the european market are engineered by germans
    Just take Albert Biermann who is responsible for some of the best BMW M cars out there.
    Just go to the VW configurator, take a Golf GTI and put everything in you get with the hyundai.
    It will be way over 40.000€, the Hyundai is way cheaper and the better performing car.

      @theRealAV8r Před 5 lety +4

      Exactly @Steven Strain. Perception alone literally means huge $$$ - just look at stock markets - or the high priced reliability hell called Land Rover lol
      But as the Hyundai brand continues to evolve, their prices are basically now the same league as their competitors, equal or more depending on options.
      Indeed the very fact that 'Hyundai' is even being discussed/compared/ranked or even cussed out so much now is proof they've won. Nobody talks about Tupolev as a Boeing competitor, they talk about Airbus, because they took on the giant with products that were consistently desirable enough to compete.

      See the big deal about your comment is the last line... Usually it's "well the Hyundai doesn't perform as well, but it's way less expensive". With this car, now it's "the Hyundai is less expensive AND it performs better"

    • @mattsamuels3607

      This comment is brand snob, I'm a VW GTI guy and I respect the i30N. It is faster than the Golf GTI and sounds amazing. Obviously the GTI is better quality and the best daily hothatch IMO. However Hyundai have smashed it with the i30N. Tbh brand snobbery just mean people are proud of their cars despite what it may be.

    Good honest review and very interesting comments ! I really like the N and it’s a great package ..however you do get what you pay for. I’ve driven a mk 7.5 Gti on several occasions and the cabin / interior is so much better. The Gti feels a lot more premium especially as the N has a stuck on tablet.
    I’ve been a passenger in an N and it sounds better than a GTI and the pops out a smile on your face. The ride though in N mode was pretty unpleasant. The difference I found with the GTI is you can put it in its sportiest settings and it’s still a great drive/road car..and well damped for uk roads. Performance wise they felt the same and point to point you wouldn’t be able to split them.
    Both great cars and have their individual appeal to certain customers. Hyundai though I felt was a bit more rough and ready.

    Good honest knowledgeable review as ever. I think that you summed up the pros and cons of the car well and it showed that you'd had the car a few days to get to know it. Sure there are some issues with the quality of the interior but I currently drive a Fiesta ST which is a classic example of Ford spending all the money on the driving dynamics and nothing on the interior save for the touch points. I get where Hyundai are coming from and at the price point I think it's a major contender for any driving enthusiast's money. After all, we all can't afford £40-50k dream machines. Sure it will depreciate but surely that's on the side of the buyer after 12 or 18 months and with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty where's the risk? it's definitely on my radar and I think a test drive is a must. I've a hunch that it won't be long before it becomes a fairly common sight on UK roads. Thanks again, Pete for an unbiased view. Cheers

Hyundai deserve to do well as they are producing some really good cars now, you need to own and run one to appreciate this. Takes away some of the potential "street cred" a front drive, hot hatch should have. The custom mode seems really intuitive, but like you Pete, it's frustrating how the radio presets never change, but the driving modes do. Come manufactures ... get it together!

The type R as I have driven it twice, once on a rainy/damp day and was Superb!!! I agree the exhaust noise could be a bit better on the Type R! Plus you do get 5 warranty on the Hyundai. Big respect to Hyundai and other Japanese car makers for pushing the boundaries tho.

    Revisiting this video, now I own a 2020 I30N due to this review. I collected it in September and tracked it at Anglesey just after break in very wet conditions, the car was amazing.That’s another reason I bought it, track warranty, they want you to track it and cover you to do so. The axle tramping you get is present in the wet as you demonstrated, but I put this down to the P zeros if I’m honest. I found them quite good at Anglesey but I will be changing to Pilot 4S’s as I think they will almost eliminate the issue. It’s such a fun drivers car, the exhaust and customisation just make it such a good package. Facelift due soon and the new DCT option too. Can’t wait to see you review it and the new I20N that’s coming out.

Good price, bullet proof engine, 5 yr warranty (I've heard they'll cover failures from track use too) and supposedly amazingly reliable brake system. Only thing that put me off was the seats, they feel weird to me and quite high.

    No-one can give goods for free. For this car, they "directed" all their resources to driving pleasure and comfortable-sporty adaptive handling.
    I sat in the car at the dealer days ago, and the quality of everything you can touch matches the average quality of the B segment (Fiesta, Clio, and so on), so it's one segment below the i30's segment (Focus, Golf, and so on).
    The stock audio system quality is lower than that in the new Polo, let alone Golf.
    I didn test the climate control system, and it is not on an equal level with the Golf's, or the Megane's (again, it's more like B segment than C segment cars').
    What you get in return is the maximum possible driving pleasure/price ration, and pretty good reliability as for the quality of the parts that aren't touched/seen all the time.

    Had a new Golf GTD 20 odd grand. Almost every time you set off some alarm went off warning you of a problem. Just outside warranty period sensors started playing up all over the place and needed replacing. Went for a service around 30000 miles and it needed £2500 spending on it. Damaged wheel on pothole £750 for 1 wheel from VW plus additional money for tyre. Ended up buying 4 lookalike wheels inc tyres for £800. Now have new Kia Ceed Gt with a 7 year warranty done 33000 miles no problems. Bring it on Kia, Hyundai etc value with bulletproof warranties.

    Keeping in mind that Hyundai is NOT a luxury car brand, this is an awesome car! N stands for performance, and not luxury. To me this is kind of a "tweener" car. More performance than the GTI or the ST, but not as much as the Type R, Golf R or the RS. But the price also reflects that. Albert Biermann said it's about the way this car feels. I think they got it right!

    Not a bad package for a mid 20's price point - I like that the Korean manufacturers will stand a 5 or 7 year warranty. Sounds good too. The front end breaking under load doesn't sound good though and the interior really lets it down. And the badge doesn't help either. That drive assist thing does my head in too - I understand it is an EU emissions thing. You just get used to jumping in the car and hitting Drive Select 4 times on startup.

    A very interesting review as I am sitting here at 1.30 a.m. watching a very young looking Peter thinking should I pull the trigger and buy the one sitting at a dealer 20 miles away. You have put me in a quandary with the fuel consumption at todays prices. I nearly bought a Golf GTI Performance today but I wasn't impressed with it (or with the cracked outer shoulder on the front tyres looks like it has been driven hard although it was a 19 plate with 8k on it) compared to my JCW but all good things must come to an end sometime. I like the look of it and my neighbour has one and that note on the exhaust is in my opinion better than the pro exhaust on my mini. Maybe the new Fiesta ST3 is the way to go with the Performance Pack, if it is half as good as the previous Gen it will be brilliant. Thanks for the honest review as I value your opinion.

  • @iduimovic
    @iduimovic Před 6 lety +10

    The skipping part when its damp or wet the road it is cause by the tire trying to get grip so it creates a bouncy effect and that translate to big hits on the suspension and that punch is transferred to the body and dash board, Plus at the same time the traction control kick in increasing the bag when it apply the brake to try to get traction. Basically is a mix of events that create that, you can try getting a better tires for the rain to increase the wet performance but at the same time it will decrease the dry performance that you get with a ultra high performance summer tire. So nothing its perfect in any car.
