  • I took a few days trip to Cologne last week by taking the Eurostar from St. Pancras International Station to Cologne via Brussels midi. It took less than 4-5 hours door to door. I was with a senior member of the Deutsche Bahn staff who allowed me to film over the drivers' shoulder which was pretty cool.

    Thus was actually my journey to gamescon last year, I took the euro star and then the ICE train
    it was alot of fun, I definitely recommend people from London that want to go to gamescon should take this journey, I know it more expensive and faster, but it's better than just sit on the plane looking out the sky for one hour where you can see not one not two but three different country on land and look at the scenery and also it's more comfortable traveling by train than air

    The DB ICE train is so much better than the Eurostar in every way, faster, quieter, comfier, roomier, reclining seats with built in radio plus they have cabin sections if you require more privacy and that is just in the standard class.

    Just nine days from now the first test run of a DB ICE train will roll into St. Pancras as part of DB's plans to offer a direct service between London and Frankfurt, presumably routed via Köln and Bruxsel?
    When this service starts for real it will signal a step change in the evolution of intra-European HSR services - unfortunately those of us residing outside the London/SE nexus will feel our exclusion from the HSR revolution more keenly than ever?

  • @laurentien00
    @laurentien00 Před 11 lety

    There is a major problem with this train: its design does not respect long tunnel safety rules. Firstly, no electrical motor should be found under each coach like it is the case with most HST such as the ICE-3. This is major fire hazard since if there is a fire it may catch where high power is found and this means at each motor location.
    Secondly, the ICE-3 opened passage length is too small to insure that upon stopping in the tunnel, one door will be facing one emergency exit.

    • @itmkoeln

      That journey time would be an illusion anyways as London to Paris is 2 hours alone (and that would be the route the Frankfurt route would be using most likely due to Frankfurt Paris beeing a shorter way than going via Cologne), and there is no (as of yet) ICE 3M service as SNCF has still not validated the ICE3 for use in Euro Tunnel (eventhough the electrical system for direct trains from Frankfurt to Paris (via Alsace) and Brussels (via Cologne) is compatible with the overhead lines from SNCF, SNCB, British Rail and DB voltage wise.

      The SNCF as the main stakeholder in Eurostar has been blocking the ICE services through the tunnel as far as I know. They won't validate the 4 electrical system trains of ICE 3M (406/7 from Siemens and Bombardier) for the Tunnel

  • @Joskevandormael-yt9gy

    There's NO train connection ICE from Koeln to London....

    • @itmkoeln
      @itmkoeln Před 4 lety

      That is right.
      There could be, the current ICE3 that DB uses for Frankfurt - Cologne - Brussels are designed with the Belgian, French overhead wires and the British Highspeed Line (HS-1/HS-2 which is the Eurostar route) in mind. The ICE3 was even showcased in St. Pancras Intl. 8 years ago... It was expected to launch in 2013 but now the estimations are 2020 or later, as the international platforms in Cologne and Frankfurt would have to be gated off from national rails with a security check like in London St. Pancras, Lille Europe, Ebbsfleet, Liege, Callais and Brussels.)
      Due to the SNCF as a stakeholder in Eurostar delaying/blocking non Eurostar passengers trains the needed Euro-Tunnel certification you still have to interchange from the ICE 3 in Brussels Midi which is the connection the Deutsche Bahn will give you when you book Cologne or Frankfurt to London via their booking service. They book you onto a ICE 3M service from/to Brussels Midi or Cologne/Frankfurt and book you an Eurostar connection from Brussles Midi Eurostar via their prices (you can go 59,90€/person if you decide early for the whole journey...)

    (Cont'd) I've since read that the Republic of Texas is toying with the idea of running a high speed between Dallas and Houston. But, as I've posted elsewhere, someone knowledgeable on the subject states that high speed travel is now old hat, given the emergence of South African Elon Musk, who is shaking up the world of high tech. My view is that I don't see the need for close proximity high tech but certainly long journey high tech. That's where I want speed.
