  • Mark Rothko’s (b. 1903, Russia; d. 1970, New York) paintings are vast fields of color that radiate from immense, life-size canvases. They are among those most frequently sought out works by MOCA visitors, and a cornerstone of the museum's collection. Noted for their material complexity-an unconventional paint mixture which includes eggs and glues, layered upon fabric canvases studiously constructed to avoid physical traces of pressure-they are particularly sensitive to light. Go behind the scenes with conservator Tatyana Thompson as she prepares MOCA's collection of thirteen Rothko paintings for exhibition, and preserves their greatness for future generations.

I was sad to see the Rothkos weren't on exhibit the last time I went to MOCA, but I figured it was for just this kind of reason. Looking forward to their return. I can't get enough of that magical room.

I can't believe a single museum has 13 Rothkos. And from what I can see, these aren't minor Rothkos either.

i dont wont to be disrespectful , i know nothing about art, but what the hell do you see in this paintings that is so extraordinary?Just read that one of his paintings was sold for 45 mil.what if i got myself a paintbrush and just did a 2 color square painting, what would be different?I am asking out of real curiosity not trying to be a smart ass.

vagvll usually because art collectors are interested in collecting these type of paintings. and for a rothko painting art collectors would be in a room betting on it and once people stopped betting on it the winner would get the painting which explains why the artwork sells to a high price because the one that could bet the most money won.

vagvll Actually the production of these works is more complex than you make out - it is not simply a matter of slapping two colours on a piece of canvas. If you view the works in person you will see that they consist of multiple layers of colour - thinned down, and applied more like watercolour.

The reason people like rothkos is because they are told to like him. Expensive Art is a popularity contest in most cases it has little to do with artistic talent. If a artist is trendy enough their art will be more expensive. artists like the true old school masters were basically judged on their ability to draw paint and sculpt realism which is very easy to judge talent wise. Abstract art cannot be judged subjectively is very trend based value wise. Just because rothkos are expensive doesn't give them any artistic value technically. Anyone who tries to explain why rothkos are masterpieces cannot a will not be able to tell you anything relevant, and will eventually just get mad and tell you to shut up.

+Abstract Art Channel All I have to say is... Try to do a photo realistic portrait by sight only. You will lose a lot of respect for Rothko and those like him.

can doing and doing it is a huge different. i suggest to try first, then ask for opinions, then compare and finally learn how hard it is. even if you would have painted it it would be to late. only the first gets the gold .

It's funny how art "experts" think that this is good art. The only reason they consider these to be masterpieces is because it is trendy to do so. They try to give long complicated explainations on why Rothko is a "genius" which make no sense to anyone. ANYONE who says they understand what Rothko was trying portray in his paintings is a liar. Even Rothko couldn't give you a relevant explainations of to why his work is a "masterpiece". If you showed the true masters a piece by rothko they would laugh and throw it away. Artistic Talent is not painting giant rectangles. Just because art has monetary value doesn't automatically give it artistic value. I have an awesome portrait that isn't worth much to anyone but me, which shows literally a million times more artistic ability than any Rothko. Actually I've seen some children's paintings with a lot more artistic value. Most of the "experts" in art are those who don't have the talent to be artist themselves.

Haha, you're under the illusion that 'art' needs to have a subject to be considered 'art.' A lot more artistic skill goes into Rothko's, or an abstract artist's, work than you think it does and to emphasize that fact, I doubt that you could personally replicate a Rothko or be able to create a completely original abstract work at your current artistic level . I'm not going to ponder on because I doubt you would care or understand but from what I see here, you basically don't understand abstract art.
